The People of
Pern (and Robin Wood)
(1988)
. |
|
" 'In what started as a short
story to improve the public image of the much maligned 'dragon,' " says Anne
McCaffrey in her Introduction to The People of Pern, "I wrote Weyr
Search, set on a planet orbiting the sun Rukbat which I located on the National
Geographic Star Map in the lower left hand corner. One million words later,
I'm not allowed to stop!"
According to Anne McCaffrey, in a world where there is
much trouble and pain, it is her intention to give people someplace where
there is hope. And that is exactly what she has created for hundreds of readers
of all ages in her many volumes on Pern including: Dragonflight,
Dragonquest, The White Dragon, Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern
and the Harper Hall Trilogy, Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and
Dragondrums.
Artist Robin Wood met Anne McCaffrey at the first totally
Pern-oriented convention in the U.S., Istacon, held in Atlanta, Georgia in
1984. However, prior to that, Robin had designed and executed portraits of
Pern characters for the Mayfair Games board game, Dragonriders of Pern. In
the ensuing conversation about what the characters from the Pern books really
looked like, The People of Pern was born. Four years of work followed,
with Robin and Anne comparing notes at conventions, discussing details of
Pern and its people, passing letters and sketches across the Atlantic and
arriving at mutually satisfactory conclusions.
Donnings/Starblaze is proud to present this first, authentic
look at the people of Pern, a collaboration of the finest kind between two
of the finest artists available today.
Pern, the third world of a golden, G-type star, was initially
colonized from earth and is a place of Dragon Weyrs, Holds, and Craft Halls.
It is a colorful blend of Middle Ages, modernity and
magic." |

Music
The MasterHarper of Pern CD
(with Tania Opland and Mike Freeman)
. |
|
"The music of Masterharper
Robinton has been described in many of Anne McCaffrey's books. Songs feature
prominently in his world as the main tool for teaching and preserving its
culture, and for passing down a warning, through generations, of the unique
dangers facing the planet's inhabitants.
The duties of McCaffrey's 'Harpers' include those of historian, teacher,
diplomat, and entertainer. This cd represents Robinton's work, both in
composition and preservation, and was created as a companion recording to
the novel The Masterharper of Pern." |

The MasterHarper of Pern
Songbook (with Tania Opland and Mike Freeman) (2005)
. |
 |
"The response was overwhelming
when we released the Masterharper of Pern CD. It came mostly in the form
of two often repeated questions: "Can we get sheet music for this?" and "When
will you do a recording of Menolly's music?" We'll get to the second question
later, but this songbook is, at long last, the answer to the first. We had
to make a lot of decisions about the notation. It would be exceedingly difficult,
if not impossible, to transcribe every note of every piece of music on the
album. Much of it was improvised in the studio around loose frameworks of
arrangements. "Robinton's Dream" was nothing but free-form improvisation,
and so, with apologies, has been omitted from this collection. For the rest,
we've tried to find the heart of each arrangement, leave out the extras which
would make it more difficult to read, and keep the parts that will be most
useful to most people. We hope we've at least come close to achieveing that
goal." |

Dragonharper by Jody Lynn
Nye (1987)
. |
|
"Peril on Pern.
Someday he would be the Masterharper, key figure in the
history of a wondrous world of dragons and Weyrs. But now, Robinton is a
young journeyman on his first posting, making the long perilous trek from
Harper Hall to Benden Weyr.
He must face the open dangers of storms at sea, beasts
in the wilds, fire lizards, brigands...and more subtle--but no less real--battles
of wit, riddles, confrontation and high diplomacy. If he succeeds, Robinton
will begin a destiny among the Dragonriders. If he fails, Robinton won't
die--but he'll be disgraced. Humiliated. Defeated...
And for a young man with dreams, humiliation can be far
worse than death." |
