You might just want to tell me what anime ya want and i could see what I can do. It might have to be for your bday though. I don't have any :2cent: right now. Friends are nice, I might get ya some for your bday but don't expect anything too great. Maybe 3x3 or something.

j_mercuryuk

yep, it's my favourite out all of them. it was what really got me into anime. i'd seen a few before then (i didn't know that they were anime), but sailor moon really set off the craze. i even got just bob into the craze.
glad you think it's cute (the avatar), sailor mercury is my fav. anime charater is what my screen name is based on. . i also cosplayed her in August.
but i'm looking for a new avatar, i feel it's time for a change.

Love anime. Saving up to get Wolf's Rain. I figure by the time the whole series is out on dvd I'll acctually be able to afford it. My last anime purchase was the InuYasha movie. Lately though my extra money has been going to my increasing manga collection.

Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke are the two best films ever made, in my opinion. Everything about both of them is perfect and fascinating.
Some of my other favourites include Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex, Full Metal Alchemist, Azumanga Daioh, Trigun (see my avatar) and I am sure that Samurai 7 will be added to my list as soon as it is released in the West.
I have to say that I can't stand Naruto, though. I met a lot of my friends through anime, and they're almost all raving about it at the moment, but I've seen two episodes and I just can't like main characters that thick! :banghead:
maiken
26th January 2005, 03:18 PM
I have to admit that i've only read the Naruto series, not seen the show. I'm waiting till they show it on the anime channel. My dad likes Trigun and likes you avatar, and I like Ghost in the Shell. They showed it I think for a bit on Cartoon Network in Adult Swim...i can't remember. I saw it somewhere. The best way to get anime to see if you like it is through Netflix. I love netflix. That is how I watched most of Hack Sign and Slayers. I would highly recommend Netflix.

Where Does Everyone Get Their Great Anime Avatars From!!!!
My friend works on webpages and dabbles in graphic design, so she's always looking for images and she makes up avatars and stuff all the time. I also do searches for avatars from certain series like Inu Yasha or Angel Sanctuary. Those searches usually lead to sites with other series and so I look through the ones I know and occassionally randomly click the ones I don't know.

I started watching anime mostly on Adult Swim while I'm at work at night. :D But I've just starting buying dvd's too. (It's what finally got me to go to e-Bay)
I got a bit of a chuckle from the title of this thread...The closest anime store is called "Anime Nuts". It's about 15-20 minutes away depending on traffic. There are a few more in Orange County that I haven't been to yet. I could spend a fortune in Anime Nuts. They've got manga, dvds, models, plushies, action figures, keychains, posters and other goodies.
At the Southern California Gathers, we talk about anime. Several serious InuYasha fans being present. ;) We also talk about gaming, but that's another subject. :D
maiken
26th January 2005, 05:06 PM
I've never been to a gather, although at the moment I am trying to plan one with my father's help.
Our local Anime store is called Brock's Stocks of Anime Pocks...I don't get the name, but it is where I buy all of my anime. 532 dvds and counting. I actually sat down and counted them yesterday...watched a few too...

well i find it quite hard to get hold of anime (only HMV near by and that has hardly any.), so i save up and go to forbidden planet, but then i mainly buy manga.
there are no good anime on tv in england which just sucks. they just don;t show them any more. All they show is DBZ, Digimon and Pokemon. oh and duel master.
oh bob, remember reading about 'Rave masters' in new type. it's gonna start soon on Toonami.

I always have trouble affording anime DVDs because they cost so much over here. The British Board of Film Censors (BBFC) charge something like £10,000 per minute of footage, and count dub and sub as seperate for the purposes of charges, which means that you're lucky to find any anime DVD (and far less any good anime DVD) that doesn't cost £19.99. I tend to borrow off my friends, or watch at the same time as them. A lot of them buy imports from the US, which can be far cheaper.

Count me in the anime (and manga, don't forget the manga) lovin group too!
I was intruduced to anime through Shoujo Kakume Utena and have never looked back. My favorite serieses are:
Utena (of course)
Magic Knights Rayearth
Sailor Moon (especially seasons 3 & 5. Outer senshi are _so_ much cooler)
Slayers (because who doesn't like slayers?)
Witch Hunter Robin
I've seen others of course, but those are my favorites.
I also am a big fan of anime conventions, especially what I refer to as the "east coast circuit", consisting mostly of Katsucon, Anime MidAtlantic, Otacon and Nekocon. I was with a cosplay group called Dark Muffins Productions, but internal group strife split that into two groups. I'm with one of them right now, working on a cosplay for Katsu this month, but I think I'll start working with the other group from now on. There's been too much drama
Just Bob

lol Am watching Blue Sub right now.
Poor you. I found the CG on that show really jarring and poorly integrated, and the storyline left a lot to be desired.
I've only ever seen one episode of Utena and the movie, but the movie was very cool! It made no sense whatsoever, but the visuals were beautiful and often hilarious. It looked like the whole story took place in an art gallery... on the inside of the paintings.
Again, I've only seen one ep. of Witch Hunter Robin, but it looked great, and I'm thinking of buying more.
:ot: Cosplay is another subject entirely. Currently, my friends and I are preparing the costumes for our annual cosplay party, and it's gonna be so great. Playing Wolfwood at AmeCon (http://www.umu.man.ac.uk/anime/gallery/Jims_AmeCon_pics/IMG_0498) last summer was so fun, partly because I was the best one of three or four Wolfwoods there. I only wish I'd gone in for the masquerade now, but I was too shy and afraid it wouldn't look the way I imagined.
Still, we're all hopefully going to AyaCon this summer, and I've already agreed to two (relatively easy) cosplays with different people.

I loved the Utena movie, from about the middle onwards. The story is just bizarre, but the visuals are hilarious. The whole film looks like it is set on the inside of the paintings in an art gallery: Escher, Picasso, Warhol and more seems to exercise their freeform takes on geometry and colour...

I like your taste. Most of those are among my favourites, and most of the others I haven't managed to search out yet.
I thought Boogiepop was interesting, but a bit _too_ enigmatic. Reportedly, you build up a clearer picture of what's going on as you see more episodes, but I must have seen about a dozen now, and I'm just as clueless as ever.
It's like Texhnolyze. I saw one episode of that, and vowed never to see another. So pretentious and arty...

I've heard they're very different, not only in characters (minimal overlap) but also in the type of action. That doesn't stop me _really_ wanting R.O.D. TV for my very own. The OAV is fantastic, especially for us bookish types.

Howl rules my world so much that I am resisting dissolving into a messy puddle of 1337-speak! R.O.D. the TV
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Full Metal Panic: Fumuffou
Stellvia
Escaflowne
Samurai Champloo

My advice is to watch it, but as a piece of fiction unconnected to anything made before. It's really good   , but I can't imagine the book being the same. Where have you been for the last 10 years? Eva is widely considered to be the best anime TV series ever made, only rivalled by Cowboy Bebop in popularity. It sometimes seems impossible to listen to 5 minutes of conversation between my friends without hearing some kind of reference to it. One of my friends has _named_ himself after a character in the series (everybody calls him Kaworu, although he's really named Scott).
I'm slowly catching up with it, now that one of my flatmates has the series on DVD, but I'm only up to episode 16 so I have to keep getting annoyed when people make references to it and I can't contribute. In that way, it's almost as bad as Naruto, although that is exacerbated by the fact that I don't intend ever to watch Naruto if I can help it.
Sorry to :box: , you just surprised me somewhat. I didn't think it was possible...

'Tis indeed. Also, someone has suggested that the Eva episode be the last one, since that is considered to be the most appealing.
I saw a couple of episodes of GetBackers at a convention, and I wasn't highly impressed. Admittedly, it was the dubbed version, and a rather dodgy dub at that...
I love the way old-school anime are sold so incredibly cheap: 20 episodes on one DVD?! We've got a couple of old kids' animations that we used to watch 20-odd years ago, and I was rather impressed that I could get 7-episode discs. Is Galaxy Express any good?
I'm pretty sure it's generally referred to as Galaxy Express 999, at least in writing. It's one of those old-school classics that would probably seem very dated visually today, but I'm still curious to see what all the fuss was about.

I've seen 3*3 Eyes (a.k.a. Sazan Eyes) and I didn't think much of it. It was very much in the style of 80s anime violence and bad dubbing, and it seems to be divided into two unequal sections. The second section bears practically no resemblence to the first, except that the character names are the same and there's a tenuous backstory to connect them. I don't know why...
What I have seen of Wolf's Rain is ace, though. I'm looking forward to being able to borrow disc 2 off j_merc at some point.

Yeah, I've seen a bit under half of FMA and the story is actually really great. I think you have to follow it closely though. Some of it is especially plot-heavy, and there are a lot of small but important characters.

Hi, I didn't read all the posts first of all. I needed to ask you Anime fans if this movie might sound familiar and if anyone might know the Title.
My son and I came across a Anime movie and missed the beginning and he really liked it a lot. It's almost like Princess Mananooke (sp?) the plot had to do with these worm like bugs. The forests were toxic and inhabitable by human. Some people captured a baby one and used it to make the adults mad and go after a villiage but this Princess had this power that befriend them and she saved the baby worm and the adults didn't attack her villiage. That's the best I can do for a description. If anyone has any idea please let me know. Whether here or through a pm. I'd appriciate it and thanks.
Fabe

That sounds like "Nausicaä of the valley of the wind",not suprized that it reminds you of Princess Mananooke since both are the works of Hayao Miyazaki who's perhapes one of the greatest dirctors of Anime around.

I'd also recommend some of his other works, like My Neighbour Totoro, Porco Rosso and Laputa - Castle In The Sky

Thank you, that name looks familiar. We also saw Castle in the Sky which aired after the other movie. It was broadcasted on AMC channel. It must have been Anime month because it fell on Thursdays and after the month was up there wasn't any more anime. Thanks again, my son is going to be so happy. I liked Castle in the Sky. :) Oh we also saw a funny/interesting one about raccoons who transformed into humans to survive in the world. Their forest was being depleated for civilization. My son just informed me he thinks the title was Pom Poko or something close. He like Inuyash and the Avitar and what ever other ones they show on cartoon network and Nick. (Sorry about the spellings.)

Pom Poko (which you did spell correctly) is the one-and-only Studio Ghibli movie I have not seen! That includes all the Miyazaki movies (Laputa, Nausicaa, Kiki, Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl) plus Only Yesterday, Whispers of the Heart (both slow-paced dramas set in the real world), The Cat Returns and the beautiful Grave of the Fireflies, done by different directors for the same studio. I don't know whether Pom Poko is actually available on DVD (especially in the UK), but if I find it, I am definitely going to buy it.

Well!
This weekend, Steve intro'd me to two more animes.
Rune Soldier (http://www.animecornerstore.com/runebrsoldier.html): Funny as hell. REALLY do like this series, Louie is quite possibly the worst magician I have ever seen, but boy does he make up for it in sheer brute... Well, stupidity  What's more, the voice for Melissa is the same person that did the voice for Clio in Orpen. KNEW there was something familiar about her voice. VERY enjoyable series, and it's here till he takes it back.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/vampire_hunter_d_bloodlust/): I loved this film. Very reminiscent of Hellsing, mainly in style. The end of this one had me confused for a little while, but as it was 3am that's understandable. This has managed to become a favourite after 1 watching. Good plot, and great animation.
WILL be buying these as soon as I have the money!
Also found the Hellsing manga books in Borders today and I wantssssssss em!
SO wish they would make the rest of the books into a series.

:blush:Sorry if this subject looks like it's popping up from out of the blue, but...
A very old discussion (possibly in the OKT) about anime, I recalled there was one that had a decent looking dragon figure, but the only problem was the "dragon" was really a mecha. (I prefer dragons in anime to be "real" characters) I had mistakenly thought it was in Evangelon, but it's really Escaflownes (http://www.aniworlds.com/reviews/anime/review.php?t=16783)

My favourite mecha was dragon-esque, although it was based upon the series Gundam, but I'm not sure if it ever became an animated character...
I bought "Dragon Gundam" as a high grade model kit in my late teens and it was my favourite kit until my dad saw it's arm was detached and threw it out as "broken" (he doesn't understand the concept of snap-together kits)
Since then I have tried to replace Dragon Gundam but have only managed to purchase one more high grade kit, Gundam Deathscythe Hell from the Gundam Wing animated series...

Well!
Just on a whim I decided to download the first episode of Wolf's Rain three days back. Then the second and third. (Poor Toboe. So sweet!)
Anyhoo. I figgered if I liked the first three enough to watch them in Japanese with english subs (Bleh) then I should download the rest.
Three days it's taken, and I am three episodes from the full series.
Will be watching em when I get the last of em, probably starting tonight. May well end up needing this on DVD I think.
In other news... I have FFVII: AC here on DVD.
Scared to watch it, cos I have watched the Japanese one a few times and the voices FIT in the Japanese one. (If you know what I mean?) Terrified they are gonna have ruined it with the voices they have for the characters in English. Fair enough they have Crispin Freeman listed, but his character has about 6 lines in the movie and they are all short :irked:
All the main voices have virtual unknowns or VG voicers.
Well, will watch that tonight if I can get Steven and Jen up to watch it with me. Have to bite the bullet sometime!

7 hours under three days to download 29 episodes of Wolf's Rain!
:woohoo:
I got FFVII from Asda.
£11.97
Make sure you get it from there. Cheapest I found yet AND that's for the two disc edition!
Gonna watch that later methinks.
Mebbes after I watch some of Wolf's Rain :D
*Edit*
It has sprung to mind you may mean Wolf's Rain. If so, I got it from winMX, and it's japanese with English subs. Fansubs. That sometimes don't make much sense. Still great tho :D
*Edit again*
I missed an episode
Now downloading episode 30
Damn me >.<
