View Full Version : So I'm undecided

Really not sure how I feel about this.
I hit an alligator tonight driving into work. I couldn't avoid him, it was very dark and there was an oncoming car so I couldn't swerve. I hate to hit animals, but with all our recent alligator attacks on people and animals, I didn't feel that bad.
And, I just clipped him, so he might have been fine. I wasn't going to stop and go check. :erm:

don't feel too bad, its not like you did it on purpose!
Plus as you said they have been attacking alot lately, so maybe that critter will stay away from the road or area and maybe you just saved someone's life.

Well it's not as if you could have done anything about it even if there was something more serious... what could you do, put it in the back of the car and nurse it back to health?
You were in an unavoidable situation, accidents happen :hugs: But just by posting this thread, you show that you feel SOMETHING, which is alot better than just pointing and laughing at it.

Ohh that's a good thought! I could've saved a little person or a pet's life.
Thanks, Sylvrena!:good:

Did it damage the car. I always think alligators are very dense and solid creatures. They must be hard to kill with cars? Do you often see them as road kill on your roads?
Is there a wildlife warden you can inform, maybe they can find it and nurse it back to health? If it is injured is it more dangerous?
Maybe you splatted it and will see it dead on the way home from work.

I don't think it damaged the car. It was just a little bump not a big one, which is why it might have survived.
But if I splatted it, I MIGHT see it in the morning.:D
Lol...I like splatted.

Faren, it's an alligator - so if you haven't cut it's head clear off, it'll survive to bite another day ;) Seriously, they're tough as roaches!

IIRC, gators are no longer on the endangered or threatened species list. Freshwater crocodiles are, but not gators. I watch a lot of Animal Planet, and the stories they show about gators can be pretty wild. Did you see the recent Animal Cops Miami episode where they captured a 20 footer who was missing HALF of his tail and 1 leg to boot? He was HUGE, well over 500 pounds...and he was so dangerous that they almost considered euthanizing him, until some wildlife refuge offered to take him.
Gators are tough, mean and ornery...clipping one with your car probably didn't even scratch his skin. And with all the gator attacks recently, maybe you scared him enough for him to leave the populated areas.

Here's hoping you got the bugger! Could have indeed saved a kid or someone's pet!

If we should feel bad about anything, it should be the loss of habitat and natural prey that has forced these animals into direct contact and conflict with us.

:hugs: Faren. I agree with the others. Maybe the bump will scare it into less inhabited areas.
Fact is, whether it was a gator or a dog - if you couldn't avoid it, then you couldn't avoid it. I'd much rather hear about a "splatted" gator then a hurt Faren!

In the view of the woollymouse, if it didn't get away it didn't deserve to stay.

Well accidents happen though it is kinda sad when you see so many animals that have been killed by cars. We have a big problem with deer and moose getting hit on the roads around here, though I'll admit they're a bit cuter than alligators. :D Just as long as you're alright Faren, that's what's important.

Quick update. I saw no signs of a gator on the way home this morning, so I think it survived.
:sigh: An alligator purse would've been lovely.

Oh yes. One's purse should always match one's shoes.

Well you show you're human to be worried at all. But if it was between the gator and you (stating you couldn't swerve without personal danger) I say Wally gator oughta watch for the crosswalks!!

Funny thing about what you said - it came off to me as if you were telling a joke. I know you're not, but the sentence just sounds . . . jokey.
Sorry for the interruption. We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic.

I am terrified of alligators, and would have felt no regret if you'd done him in. I've heard so many horror stories about them creeping into peoples' pools and ponds and making off with children and dogs, G-d forbid.
