I'm ambidexterous, with the right hand sligtly dominant (I prefer to write with it.) My left-hand writing is not nearly as neat as my right (which, if you've ever seen my right-hand writing, says a lot--I can't even read what I wrote sometimes), but I can write with both, and I can do most mechanical tasks with either hand, which is helpful in the kitchen as sometimes I'm standing in such a way I can't use my right hand for a job.

I'm pretty much the same--was born lefty, trained righty, wound up able to write very well with my right hand and not that well left (though in scripts that go right-left, such as Arabic, I do better... though I use my right hand there because there's all sorts of nasty cultural predjudice against leftys there). I generally use my left hand for things requiring strength.

I can also grip, throw and pick up just about anything and tie knots with my toes

Righty here, and I wish I were more ambidextrous than I am. I can write with my left hand, though, and my left hand is more accurate and faster typing than my right. I type ten-fingered without looking at the keyboard, but not using the "official" system. Letters to the left of and including U, J and N I type with the left hand.

Mostly left handed but I can print neat enough with the right hand that it's easy to read. I play ball and bat left handed but I have a right handed mouse. I punch numbers on the phone with the left hand, but I use the number pad on the keyboard with the right. I think because it's such a right handed world that most lefties grow up using both hands and right handed tools. Married 23 years and hubby still says I put the twist ties on backwards. :D

Mausey, my mother was born left-handed. She went to a Catholic school. The nuns would hit her hands with a ruler when she did things with her left hand...claiming it was EVIL! :banghead:

Not all that long ago Ravien, my mother is 57 now, and it happened to her until she was about 12 or 14. It made her hate school and contributed to her having a rather misserable childhood. She now can only write righthanded, but her handwriting is not the most readable.

I'm predominantly left-handed, but when I was young there were no such things as left-handed scissors or potato peelers, so I had to learn to do some things right-handed. My parents also insisted that I learn to eat right-handed, because they didn't want me to be laughed at if I ever had school dinners! Thank goodness kids these days don't have to put up with such nonsense! :banghead:

granath

Speaking of eating, like most Europeans I hold the knife in my right hand and the fork in my left when I eat anything that has to be cut. The American way of switching between knife and fork in the right hand looks incredibly awkward. If I eat with a spoon or chopsticks I'll use my right hand, though.

I'm totally left handed!! There are very few things I do with my right hand and they happen to be things I learned later in life. One of the main ones is using a mouse. The only reason that I use my right hand for that is when I had a job digitizing maps the system was set up for a right handed mouse operation. Now if for some reason I have to use my left hand to use my mouse it feels down right WIERD!!!!

As they say, Left handed people are the only ones in their RIGHT mind..... Everyone else is left out!!

also, God only made a few perfect people.... The rest are right handed!

weird?

i use both hands on the right-handed mouse. mainly cos i'm lazy and need an arm to prop my head on... so i cross my left hand over and use as normal. quite easy to train yourself to do that ;)

(tho i'm more often than not, in that pozzie.. so it's a lefty using a right-handed mouse as normal)

Worked with a guy last year who changed the mouse settings on the work compie to being a left hand one. It made it difficult for the rest of us, and we had to go find other computers to use. Basically he staked that one out and claimed it as "his", and it was supposed to be for all of us sharing that office. I sympathize with his frustration of being VERY left handed (he conducted the opposite way too) but this action was not appreciated by those of us who had to go to other rooms to use the computer. One the other hand (hehehee) I got an idea of what it's like to be the opposite of what the world is!

I'm an ambi~

when Im setting up for a facepainting,, or if the day starts slow.... to keep myself from being bored.. I extend my canvas..

(busy show's~I'll be doing good to have a gypsy wimsey around one or both eyes...)

slow show~ every available inch get's something! so when the kids and parents walk up and watch me paint or ask later how I got them on my right arm.. I just grin and wave the left hand~ :D it wow's them to no end~

so I paint, craft, I can kinda crochet left(really really hard for me), write, sing, and eat.. and kinda type with both... but I have to admit... both sides of my brain hates mathsss and spilling~ :D

Forgive me all for the diatribe I'm about to give but I LOVE BEING A LEFTY.

My Grandmother was left-handed but was terribly abused in school (strapped, ruler, left arm tied to chair) so she switched.

Next generation no lefties, however mine generation produced two...myself and my cousin, (coincidentally both the eldest child...her eldest cousin on the other side was also a lefty).

I tried to train my eldest son to be lefty much as my mother tried to train me to be a righty...we both failed. :D He does bat and golf left although he catches right.

The final chapter has yet to be determined. When I got preggers with our "Monster" I did some investigating as my darling husband is also a lefty. I discovered that although 2 right handed parents have a 90% chance of producing a right handed child...2 left handed parents have only a 50% chance. Weird!!!

Now, almost 3 years after his birth (and more than 3 years after he started trying to be born ---pushy kid) he appears to have chosen both. MIL is convinced he is a righty though. Last summer he was drawing with his sidewalk chalk with both hands and in opposite directions making identical circles. He predominantly uses his left hand but appears to switch at will (that's why MIL thinks the way she does). If you put his untensil in the right side of his bowl that's the way he'll eat...and vice versa.

In conclusion...may I remind all...especially the lefties of the world

LEFT HANDED PEOPLE ARE THE ONLY ONES IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS :ok:

LEFTIES OF THE WORLD UNITE :D :box:

BTW...famous lefties include (but are not restricted to)...Carol Burnett, Lewis Carroll, Charlie Chaplin, Bob Dylan, Benjamin Franklin, George VI, Whoopi Goldberg, Jimi Hendrix, Da Vinci, Paul McCartney, and Queen Victoria (and yes I deliberately excluded "bad guys" like Billy the Kid, Jack The Ripper, and The Boston Strangler :shhh: )---information provided by The World's Greatest Left-Handers - Why Left-Handers are just plain better than Everybody Else
by James T. deKay and Sandy Hauffaker

Another good reference book for lefties is The Left-Handed Guide To Life - A Witty and Informative Tour of the World According to Southpaws By Leigh Rutledge and Richard Donley

:dragon: I have heard that dyslexia does occur more frequently in left-handed people. I'm left handed and if I'm not paying attention will get letters and numbers in the wrong order, and directions such as east and west reversed.

I guess it's not terribly surprising, the dyslexia thing, with left-handed people living in a right-handed world. I use my left hand for writing, holding forks and spoons, the knife goes in either hand depending on what it's used for. If cutting, it's in the right hand; if spreading, it's in the left. And there're a few other things, but my right hand is used for most everything else, throwing, batting, firing rifles, using the mouse, using remotes... My right arm is definitely the stronger.
