Ok I posted this and was told to start a new thread so the answer my be elsewhere.
I thought that Dragon's Kin would be out in paperback earlier, but Borders indicates 12/31/04 but in the store on 12/28. Although they have 56 copies coming in, I reserved my copy anyway.
Now When does Dragon's Blood official come out? Also wondering if there is a way to get the UK version (at a reasonable price) since the covers in the UK are much nicer than the US versions.
Why do they have cool covers in the UK and teh US covers are delegated to the mundane. From what I saw, the same cover in the US was used ina couple of different books.
I like the ones that depict different Dragons and their riders.

The earlier US covers (Whelan particularly) were great, but at the point where we stand now I must admit that overall I like the UK covers better. I actually think I love Les Edwards' dragon better than Michael Whelan's (sorry Ian) and I definitely love Edwards' backgrounds!
A true horror is the "modern" this-is-a-literary-and-not-a-fantasy-novel type US cover they used for The Skies of Pern (even if the US cover had an Edward's dragon on it)!

Dragon's Kin in paperback is already out in the UK and has been since the beginning of November :D If you want to get it, it's available on www.amazon.co.uk
Dragons' Blood is scheduled for hard-back publication in the US on 25 January 2005. Not clear yet when we'll get it in the UK though :(

Not sure why you said that Hans, I've never been a fan of Whelan's work (Steve Weston on the other hand...) & I like Les Edwards too. :)
Looking at Todd's site it seems that the same Les Edwards artwork is going to be used for both US & UK versions, with only the lettering being different (though the US version looks a bit lighter)

Then I apologise Ian because I had thought I had read somewhere that you didn't like Edwards' dragons :O

Although I like most of Whelan's work, and just love a couple of them, I have never liked his Pern covers. I prefer the Steve Weston ones, even if they have too many dangly bits on them.

There are major holes in Steve Weston's work :D
But he can do a good cover! ;)

I prefer Michael Whelan's work to anything else I've seen so far, but I don't think he's drawing much anymore. Some condition with his hands, I seem to remember.

Overall, I rather like Whelan's. Cannot STAND Weston's (sorry, UK folks, but they have too many spines and fins--they look like fish). I like the few we see in Robin Wood's paintings, and Rowena's on the cover of Dragonholder are all right...overall I've never quite seen one that I think really is horsey enough in the head. If I had to pick an absolute favorite, probably (ears notwithstanding) the comic-book versions from the DF comic.

I like the Whelan covers best. The others have to much extra stuff all over them. And what is with the holes in the wings anyway? How would they fly? Do artists not read at all?

I could ask that of most artists, whose covers bear little relation to the contents, however good the dragons may look. At least Steve Weston has obviously read the books - check out his covers for All the Weyrs & Nerilka's Story in particular, & you can point to the exact paragraph they illustrate, how many others can you say that about?

I don't know if the HB and the PB are teh same or not as I only have the PB versions. The one I hate the most is Deagon glight by Gino D'Achille. The next one is DragonDrums, Bantam Books version which claims the art work .
Dragonquest and Moreta by Whelan are almost identical. My copy of the Chronicles does not have anArtists name attached either nor does Dragon'sEye.
The one I love the most is the Master Harper of Pern and while there is also no name attached, it is the same as the CD. The next one I like is Mike's All the Weyers cover.
The most boring is the Skies of Pern .

I like most of the covers. I think I like Dragon's Dawn and Dragonsinger or Dragonsong (whichever is the one with Menolly and her Firelizards on the cover). I like Whalen's work as well but I think I tend to like his none dragon art work better. I would *love* to have enough money to buy a print!! Maybe someday! :)

What's the website that has all the cover art, so I can compare?

As for the holes in the wings, my guess is that it threadfall damage - but we know that wing membrane grows back quite well.
But he did read the books, as Ian points out, and he's got an Atlas of Pern, as the cover picture of Nerilka he did shows Ruatha exactly as depicted in the Atlas. Brings it to life!

That's the english version, but he has more on the non-english part of his site. I haven't looked at it in a while, though, it might have changed.

I prefer all the UK covers over the USA ones, and I'm getting very fond of Les Edwards' dragons.
And Les is a very nice man! :ok:

Well I know at least from the cover's of Whelan's Renegades and AtWoP, While I was reading them the pictures illustrate almost exactly what was being written. With Renegades, Jayge and the caravans going past the Skybroom trees and the dragons flying overhead. And on AtWoP when ruth and the other dragons are flying down to Honshu and they landed on those rocky masses with the trees on them.
I like Whelan the best, ESPECIALLY the cover for AtWoP. Except I despised the one he did for D'Eye. I don't like Steve Weston's work, the wings look more like giant fins, as others have said. Gerald Brom who did Masterharper of Pern was good. I loved his depiction of Robinton. The only one from Les Edwards that I REALLY like is from Dragonsblood, which is going for my favorite cover of all, even though its not an accurate portrayal of a Pernese dragon. The closest I've seen to what Anne McCaffrey describes, although its only a head, is from the cover of A Diversity of Dragons, but the ridges don't really look right to me.
