View Full Version : NaNoWriMo 2006. Who needs a life in November anyway?

Well it's October, and there's only 23 days to plot and plan left. So who's up for it this year?
For those who wonder what it's about and who have nothing better to do for the next few weeks here's a link http://www.nanowrimo.org/
Warning very addictive and time consuming. Proceed at your own risk!

Uh...stupid question, but if you've had the story in mind, why didn't you just write it?
I confess to just not getting the whole NaNo thing. I write a little (sometimes very little) almost every day, unless I'm really flattened (which I rather am tonight, and fully expect to be after dinner for 250 tomorrow.) I don't know that I'll get 50,000 words written in November, but I don't really see the point of waiting until then to start, either.

As for me, I'm extremely lazy about writing; when I do it I love it but I can not seem to be able to get started. NaNo gives me the push I need: it says you have to write the story now.

Oh It's way worse than that. I've been typing away at another story and ideas crop us all the time. Rather than start on them I just make notes and wait for this. I'm desperate to start now, but it's the challenge of the thing, and sharing the torment with other idiots out there that make me do this!

Although I'm not going to do NaNo, the part I find admirable and likeable about it is that you can write fanfiction for it....it saves you a lot of world-building time. ;)

Except that in return, you have to make sure you understand the characters someone else wrote properly - it's not a fanfiction if the characters only have their names in common with the characters seen in the show. :(
Lady Faizah
16th October 2006, 03:17 AM
Personally, I can't do fanfiction with anyone else's characters. I'll use their worlds, no problem, but the characters have to be all my own. I'm not even sure that counts as fanfiction in the traditional sense, but it certainly doesn't count as all-original fiction.

I prefer to write about my own characters in the writers world if at all possible when writing a fan fiction...saves a lot of hassle of getting the author's characters wrong.

What is your story on? I have plot bunnies storming my mind and no way to kill them off as yet so I may as well use them for something...and I helped rabble find a dammned good one for hers :D
elfycat
25th October 2006, 10:51 PM
It started as a medical drama in a futuristic spaceships sickbay, then morphed a few times as plot bunnies hit at FTL speed and seems to be turning into an ensemble piece and :erm: romance sci-fi thing with evil plots by power mad officials. I'm killing my first male lead and the second male lead is in a coma in my notes. The female MC (doctor in sickbay) seems to be the angel of death!
I need a name and a diabolical scheme. Then I'm good to go.
Bamy

Hmmm.....could you give me a few more details like how it is supposed to end (if you don't want to post send me A PM)

Who is the main MC the nurse? the man in a coma? or some evil official?
Bamy
25th October 2006, 11:02 PM
Diabolical schemes.....
shortcut on vital lifesaving equipment/medications and send people out on missions where they will require this stuff?
do random testing on people to see their reactions to drugs - without mentioning that they are under trial?
angel of death girl finds out about plot and when officia comes in or random testing scares bejeesus out of official in charge by pretending to give the test drug?
Bamy
25th October 2006, 11:03 PM
I would gothe route of officials using something to 'mind control' the populatn of a planet - but that is so serenity....
Bamy
25th October 2006, 11:06 PM
or you could do a mix of all of them plus main characters (in love characters) being sparated / put in danger purposely because of evil official cos evil official wants woman/ man for him/herself?
or the unwanted one could be sent down to 'invstigate' the problem - that they caused?
elfycat
27th October 2006, 04:14 PM
Hmmm.....could you give me a few more details like how it is supposed to end (if you don't want to post send me A PM)
:erm: not sure yet. I imagine that the :erm: romance bit might work out for the female MC (medic) and the recovered male MC2 in the long run. Evil plot (TBA) will be resolved with much rejoicing, especially for MC ensemble who will be helping to bring down the nasties.
Is there a particular space station or spaceship that the characters are based on?
They're on a deep space exploration mission in shiny new ship, unfortunately they have to return to the space dock twice because of engine faults. Other characters are on the planet the space dock orbits and one is in military intelligence.
Who is the main MC the nurse? the man in a coma? or some evil official?
Ensemble piece. Those two are my leads, but secondary characters keep elbowing themselves up the pecking order.

As the scribblers scribble away, problems start to crop up. Like the ickle badger who forgot how to update her post count. Fortunately for all involved, she managed to avert disaster by fixing it.
In other news, sleep deprivation is prevalent. Leading scientists say it might even become a global pandemic, with people in several parts of the world reporting this distressing condition.

A guard dies. (Can cover the guard's death, or not) He continues his job after death.
He could be guarding an important artifact, perhaps in a museum or bank vault, or an important person. Or, if you want to make it slightly more of a comedy, he could be guarding something relatively small.
Like maybe he's the security guard at a small shopping centre in the middle of nowhere, and he has to keep doing his job because they can't afford someone else.

could someone possibly give me aplot for something. I have a title and no idea where to go with it. The title is 'the ghost guard' any ideas?
An army of the fay?
:erm: I'll think up more later.

Made it to 30 thousand (typed up), which was my personal target! Whoot!
Still writing the thing - I have maybe another 20k which is handwritten - and still adoring it. ^_^
As for "The Ghost Guard" although my first thought was a squadron of ghosts, I'm now thinking you could have a group of elite soldiers who are sent in for delicate matters, leaving no trace that they've ever been there and sticking to stealth and speed for their main weapons... And perhaps one goes rogue. These things always seem to happen. ^_^
It's a cool title, though! Should be fun wherever you go with it.
(By the way Rabble... Nice avatar! :D)

Has anybody continued writing since November? Any advice?
I'm thinking about plunging back into my little (20K) story. But I'd kind of hit a wall about 10K in, and it's mostly just procrastination for the last 10K or so.

Um... I think it's about halfway done, and I think it sucks big time.
Flat characters, uninteresting plot, plotholes... you name it, we've got it.
But if you want to read what I've written so far, I can send it to you.

I wonder if I should share what I've got so far... :erm: I wonder if I can even remember the password to my writing journal.
EDIT: Some is in my NaNo profile excerpt -- but only a couple of scattered paragraphs. http://www.nanowrimo.org/simpleinfo.php?uid=37191

And I think someone should hold a gun to my head and make me edit them. :disguise:
