This dragon looks exactly how I always pictured them.
I bought it in a shop in Edinburgh some years ago, and now it is lying on a bookshelve protecting my AM books from thread and dust :D
It has a sticker underneath it saying "Dragontale".
Does anybody else have a perfect (pern) dragon?

Not how I imagined them.... Here's my perfect Pern dragon.... Nevermind.... Apparently they don't sell my copy of the book anymore. But the size and appearance was PERFECT. At least for me.

I like the look of that dragon Dream Cake, but it doesn't look equine enough to be pernese, it looks too reptile-ish. And the things on the head look more like horns than knobs. Still a nice looking dragon though. I haven't seen a depiction of a dragon that looks perfect for me yet.

I prefer the Celtic dragon myself. I know they look and are reptileish but I have always thought of that as my perfect dragon. If you can find someone into ceramics Doc Holiday Mold company has the best dragons out there.

I like how the blue dragon looks in the cover of MHoP.

Yah, I agree. That one does look good. I still prefer the dragon on whatever copy of Dragonsflight I have.

But of course, you have to reference to NOT the one on the front of teh Del Rey versoin, that has illistrations in it. That is the example of the most imperfect dragon drawing EVER! UGLY! The one that has the illustrations done by Tony DiTerlizzi. hes better at doing Magic the Gathering cards.

I can't say I like that cover. Whats with the eyes protruding right out of their heads? While its not the *worst* cover I've seen, its not the best IMO. The overall structure isn't that bad, and the head is the closest I've seen to horse-like (besides the eyes). The covers I like the least are by Steve Weston, the fingers on the wings look more like spikes than like bat wings.

I like the picture of Ruth on the White Dragon. Its the picture where dragons are climbing rocky spires with twisted trees on the top. Its one of my favorites, but I can't remember who the artist was. I like my dragons a little more reptile looking than most of the pictures suggest. My dragons have to be power yet elegant, primitive but suggest great intelligents at the same time. :dragon: But of course I am just describing myself. :D

Actually Ravien, I think that is the one where the dragons are exactly how I imagined them. I love how they look on it. Graceful, yet alien, head knobs present, hide, faceted eyes, size is perfect.

That one is by Michael Whelan, which is one of the most wonderfully painted covers out there, along with Dragonsblood by Les Edwards. For the longest time I was convinced that it was EXACTLY how a Pernese dragon should look, before I got picky with all the little details :D I wish there were more paintings on the stylistic level of that one.

Hmmm..I think my favorite is the depiction of a dragon on the cover of Dragonsblood. My second choice would be Ruth on the cover of the White Dragon or (and i think it's supposed to be Ruth) on the cover of MHoP. Very good depictions of the Pernese Dragon if you ask me.
I was impressed with the cover of Dragonsblood and MHoP.

I like your avatar, too, Arwyn. Except that it's purple. It's graceful yet powerful. Gorgeous!
I've always liked Michael Whelan's covers, especially for All the Weyrs of Pern. He's got some great sketches in The Girl who Heard Dragons that I absolutely love. :heartbeat

Technically it's not supposed to be purple. It's supposed to be white (Ruth), at sunset. The "light quality" makes him look purple. This image is from the DRoP card (board?) game.

My favorite dragon is on the cover of the Dragonflight book I own.....
I think the illustrator was Tony Di...I can't remember the rest. (And I'm much too lazy to fetch the book. ;) )

Are there any other illustrations throughout that edition of the book? For some reason I thought there was. If so, could anyone be bothered to scan some in please? ;)

There are, but they need to make a better rendition of the Masterharper. Robinton looks like a frail man who has never eaten a piece of food in his life.

I really, really *hate* this particular "version" of Pern dragons. They look like overgrown bugs to me. THe head in particular reminds me of a grasshopper. Anne says the are HORSELIKE!
Well, being a Pern fanatic, I still keepany Pern art I come across. So here are some of the other illustrations.

*gags* oh shards, I *really* do not like that first image. yeah it does look like a grasshopper  The cover was alot better. The watchwher didn't bother me that much, but they're supposed to be ugly anyway. I know they only had 2 toes, but the feet still looked far to tiny to be able to run swiftly.

Without meaning to challenge that, where's it say watch-whers only have two toes? 'Cause according to DBlood, they have three.
I haven't really cared for any of the cover illustrations. The only pics that I think come close are some of the ones in the DLG.

Ok, looks like another thing to add to inaccuracies of the DLG, thats where I got it from. I'm not sure if its mentioned anywhere else.

I kinda think the Ral Partha miniature is my idea of a Pern dragon. Kinda horse-ish in the face, but really muscular like it could jump off the ground into flight.
Here's a link for those that haven't seen it:

I'd love to find one of those models one day. :)

What a weird coincidance, I was JUST about to post that!
It looks very good, but the tail looks slightly too thick and the legs could be a bit bigger to make it spring off the ground, maybe more horse-like. But its one of the best dragons I've seen so far out of everything professional, besides the Ramoth head on A Diversity of Dragons, that looks just perfect to me :D

Maemith, that's EXACTLY how I imagined them! However, the wings need to be MUCH bigger to support that huge body. :ok:

Actually the wings look about the right size. A dragon's wingspan in supposed to be 1 2/3 the length of the dragon. It doesn't look like it would support a creature of that size, but thats why they have telekenesis ;)
I do have one major complaint about that one though, the ridges on the neck look FAR too small, and on the thail it seems that there are ridges *beside* each other too, I think its just supposed to be a single line.
