Um. I was just wondering about this, because you never hear of a character's Middle or last name. So, what is up with the Surnames?

I don' think they have them... just name and place of origin, ie Groghe of Fort Hold etc.

I agree with C_ris, and sometime after Landing they dropped the middle and last names. I guess names became more unique so it was easier to tell them apart.

It was in The Ford of Red Hanrahand that they talked with dispensing with surnames. Sean and Sorka, her parents and the Bendens were cooing over Sorka's new baby and the name Ezremil when the need for surnames was discussed.
The traders seem to be the only ones who continued to use family names.

What about Jayge Lilcamp and his trader train? there were more families mentioned in the Renegades, but I think that was because they didn't come from any one place as they weren't a stationary group and it was a way of defining where they came from, when you had a place to stay permanently that was your identifier...

The traders are the exception to the rule. While the family names were dropped by all, the traders kept using them. Lilcamp is the form that renamed of the original Lilienkamp name.
Like C-ris remarked I suppose that has been done because the traders had no permanent place of residence.

Yeah, there aren't surnames on Pern. "John of New York" seems to work pretty well.
"John, son of James" has not been considered since most Pernese names combine the mother's and father's names.

Since most hold women seem to have a lot of children, some of them have to have names that are not combinations. One of Lord Groghe's sons is Horon. The first child or even the first couple may get named after the parents but after a while you run out of combinations. If you are pregnant by someone with rank and not married to them, combinding of names would be a little more important, since it indicates who your father is.

Sirnames are a comparitively recent addition even here on Earth, and in the West. I've lived where people were known by a combination of nicnames and patrials. Where five David Quintal's can sit down at the same table, there has to be some way of distinguishing them.
