Why is she called THE Rowan? Why don't they just call her Rowan? To me it just makes her sound pretentious :erm:

Because it's not her actual name, it becomes more of a title.

Yes, I know that she forgot her actual name and they just called her "The Rowan child" for her location at the Rowan settlement, but I don't understand why they didn't just contract it over the years of her childhood. Even knowing that she would likely be a Prime, surely she wouldn't have enough prestige as a child for it to become a title?

I think Reidinger called her Rowan. Not sure why the "The" part stuck. I think it was more of a title than anything else.

I dunno, I think it kinda makes sense, with her being the last survivor of the Rowan settlement, she isn't /always/ called The, just occasionally. I've always thought it was cool.

Siglen objects to her calling herself that, and she says that's what everyone calls her - the Rowan child.

I think it's the n-ending that's confusing. I always thought of The Rowan child as a location marker, similar to The Altairian child.

If anyone's addressing her directly, then they just call her Rowan, they can't exactly say, "Hi, the Rowan!" but if anyone else is referencing her, or during the narrative, it always has the 'The' prefix.

As time goes on her real name is used more often and the Rowan used as a title much the same as Callisto Prime or Callisto. Also look at the other primes; David of Betelguese is hardly ever just referred to as David and we don't even know Capella's name.

I've heard of (only met one) various women in today's world having the name "Rowan," so the fact that they kept the "the" was somewhat surprising to me. It does seem like a very awkward handle.

I know of two female Rowan's and three male Rowan's -- including my son. However, he's named Rowan because it means "little red-headed child" and he is.
Most of the time when spoken to she was simply called, "Rowan" but when being referred to, she was "The Rowan" which I saw as a contraction of "the Rowan child" meaning the child of the Rowan mining outpost who survived the mudslide. I think that because she is Prime, "The Rowan" simply became her title.
