There are so many parts of Harpering. Not every Harper sings...

I'm a journalism student, I figure that is part of the information network of Harpering.

Nope, not me. I'd be in the Hall that would create tapestries, that sort of thing, as I do cross stitch pictures. Not sure what that would be called. I'd have enjoyed working on bigger tapestries if I was on Pern. I can't sew clothes to save my life, but I can follow a pattern to do a picture.

I'm a Library Aide, which I think would fall under record keeping... or would that be other duties? Well anyway I voted for record keeping since Libraries are where records are kept :) and those Libraries wouldnt be able to help the puplic efficiently with out us Aides :D lol

I think that would be Weaver Hall. I think that's who did the tapistry for Mardra's father.

Tough one for me.. workwise, i'd be in the computer technician's hall .. i work in IS and am a computer nut.

HOWEVER, my dream was always to be in music.. and would have majored in music in university if my parents would have allowed me to (they basically told me "no, you can't go into music" even though i paid for my own university education  you think they would have wanted to see something come out of the 11 years of private music lessons they put me through...)

Um, would playing in the band make me a harper as part of the Music section? i would think so...

Hmmm....I'd likely belong to harper hall on a modern, technological Pern. I've worked in TV broadcasting and sound recording for most of my life.

...but personally I couldn't carry a note in a bucket...I'm just good at recording other people playing and singing!

I'm a student, leaning towards either theater or being an author. Or both. :D

Yep. Teaching, theater, storytelling, writing, once upon a time music too. And I want to go into either law or diplomacy.

I'd be in the Healer's Hall.

I define myself as a translator (although most of my working hours are spent doing other things), so I think it would qualify for Harper Hall. At least it would if there were more than one language in use on Pern!

I must say that your fate shocks me, wulfin. Here I'm glad it wouldn't happen. Parents are obligated to support their children in tertiary education (tuition is free up to master level, but living costs do accrue) according to their means until the kids turn 20, but they have no say in the kids' career choice. Fortunately.

No, I don't think I fit into the Harper Hall. I'd be a member of the Purple Monkey Dishwasher Hall! :)

granath - i can't imagine free tuition!! LOL. i paid for my university (tuition, books, etc) while my parents allowed me to live at home for free.. in retrospect, i'm GLAD i paid for my own education.. you could always tell which students had to pay their own and which had mom and dad pay for it :)

Parents technically can't say here what you go into in college, but my mother is a "travel agent for guilt trips". i have no backbone to stand up to them, so instead i got a nice degree in "basket weaving" as my mother calls it :D (I mean, what can you REALLY do with a degree in.. *takes a deep breath* Canadian Studies with a focus on the fine arts??). i did switch my major three times because i didn't really want to do anything BUT music (chemistry to classical studies, to canadian studies). Oh well :) I still ended up doing something i love (IS) though not as much as music.

You can always do musical things on the side. Many people participate in musical organizations, etc while working at other things. I am sorry your parents did that to you! I was told "just make sure you can work at it...." and I have been! Not getting rich but have MUCH satisfaction, esp. now that I am back in the part of the state that I seem to belong.

With a name like mine, you can tell what I do.... :D I teach choir grades 7-12 (about age 12-13 to 18 or so) and have a fine arts appreciation class right now. I do teach piano on the side and do a few other things now and then.

I do do some musical things, but not nearly as much as i used to. And my degree (focusing on the fine arts) was as close as i get in school. Unfortunately, i don't think i've taken either my flute or piccolo out of their cases in over a year and my parents sold their piano... but believe it or not, i'm starting to give a coworker's daughter clarinet lessons, so i may get back into music one day. :) Unfortunately, community groups here are not up to my standards .. having taken flute lessons for 6 years and being in college bands when i was in jr high and high school....it'd be hard for me to swallow my pride and join one of the adult community groups which focuses on learning how to play which is all we have here.. :S

Of course.. having not played seriously for about 3 years i know i'm dreadfully out of practice but that could come back with a few months of serious practice.

Well, obviously I'm a 'green' rider in a weyr... Though the green is temporarily on leave for this lovely shade of pink but hey ho...

As for halls, I would've been brought up in Healer Hall before I became a rider... I believe I'm listed as Greenrider and Healer - AlterEgo is Healer and Greenrider, note the subtle distinction

I have no idea where I belong.

Business... I was in marketing & sales...with an administrative secretarial background.
Pleasure...I work with tools in wood (making all kinds of things), wool (knit/crochet/X-stitch), cloth (sewing).

Is there a "spot" for me anywhere?

Teacher, writer and choir member.

My son and daughter in law are musical harpers.

I can do a whole bunch of musical things, but I can't imagine wanting to do them as a career. (Not a good enough voice for a soloist, not willing to practice enough on winds to make an orchestra.) I'm a writer, but I don't think there's a place for writers of fiction in the Harper Hall. All they seem to do is history and quasi-poetry, which is also just recording history in verse. Otherwise, the closest thing there is to fiction are the sort of 'Pern pop songs' like "The Morning Dragon Song," which aren't recording anything but don't really mean much otherwise. The Pernese seem to basically lack any sort of literature whatsoever.

I cook, and I ice-dance. I suppose I could be in the bakercraft, but if I had to live on Pern, I'd want to be a queen rider, not a crafter.

Hmmm, I think I'm going to have to make a new rule. To be a Harper, it has to be your primary job, or you are in specific training for a job that falls under the Harper umbrella. Like if you're in college you might be a very senior Apprentice if you are a college music/therater, etc major or very junior Journeyman if you are going for your Master's Degree. Also you could be considered an apprentice if you're in high school with a specific direction of training, like advanced choir with an intention of majoring in music in college or work for your high school newspaper with an intention of majoring in Journalism..

On Pern lots of people play instruments or do other things that Harpers do. But they are hobbyists. Like those who played instruments at Half-Circle for everyday singing.

I'm a working journalist [both day and night jobs]. By day, PIO [public information officer] for a state agency--by night, freelance journalist.

I've been writing professionally for about 10 years now--so where would one place me in the Harper Hall hierarchy??

Hun, if they're in the morgue, they're definitely PAST Healer skills! I don't think I could work there.
