hand reached out and touched Erilan’s shoulder from behind, startling the princess. “Something troubling you, high mage?” Came the voice of Trilon, a whisper on the cold night breeze.
Erilan turned to face him with saddened eyes and a frown on her face, “No…” She trailed off, not knowing whether to confide in the man she hardly knew. She measured him up, thinking silently of his traits and her past with him. Once she had decided, she spoke once more, “…well, yes. It is this entire situation! I am not meant to be a mage or a sorceress. I have only learned to protect those I care about or myself! I have no special abilities; anyone is as capable as I. High mage indeed! I am lucky if I even get my protection incantations right! I have never ki- murdered a man before. I have only killed to protect myself and this is murder, assassination! It would go against my beliefs. I would falter with my blade and perish and the world would perish with me! I am not meant to be a noble heroine that will be recorded as the savior of us all. I am a mere peasant who was found to be a princess. I just cannot face up to this challenge. I cannot do it! I am too weak. You would be far better than I. Even Alanyn or Ellysan, someone with a history. Someone who knows who they are and are not clueless about their past would be far more suiting for this job! Not I! Not I! Why have the mages been so cruel as to punish me with this curse even before I had done anything! I am not deserving of the title of High mage! I am not worthy of beauty and wisdom. I am not worth anything. Worthless I tell you, worthless! No one would want me as their savior anyway. I am not attractive emotionally. I am a horrid woman with no personality except that given me. I am a chunk of clay to be molded by whoever has the whim to do so. This task should not be given to someone so unloved as to never have had a family or friends. To never have loved and received it! I am unlov-“ she was silenced by Trilon’s finger pressing to her lips.
He removed his finger and kissed her virgin lips gingerly. “I love you. You can do this.” He said, pulling slowly away from the moment of passion. “You are destined to be the redeemer of good in this land. Your heart is pure; not only are you physically beautiful, your sole is beautiful as well. Erilan, you are the high mage and you will succeed. I will be there for you even through the darkest times. Trust yourself and trust in me. You and I will make it. Just believe!”
Erilan was speechless; she had just received her first real kiss. Just had her first moment of passion. The princess was truly in love for the first time in her life. “I love you, too. I think.”
“Do not think, rest your mind, rest your body, sleep deep, and forget the troubles. I will be here by your side.” Trilon replied, directing her towards the bed with a gentle shove. “Do not let your mind trouble you. For tonight, nothing depends on you. Place all your problems on me and I will bear them for you.”
“Thank you.” Erilan responded. As if a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders, she fell into her bed with a smile on her face and a glisten to her eyes. “Lay with me. I do not want to be alone.”
Trilon hesitated, evaluating her statement, then slid beside her, above the covers, into her bed. The princess smiled as he turned to face her, draping an arm over her covered body, his naked chest facing her. All he had on his mind was her and she him. It was bliss to be able to put aside the turmoil in the world, to escape the torment of the growing despair that consumed the people of Ellesian.
Erilan opened her mouth to speak, but Trilon deterred her, “sleep, do not speak. Enjoy this calm before it will be gone. This may be our only night together. Sleep.”

Erilan slid across the grass and placed her legs on opposite sides of man that had recently collapsed from exhaustion, sitting on his waist. She then spread her body the full length of Trilon’s, wrapping her arms around his clothed torso with an intense passion. He hugged her back with an equal amount of affection and the pair lay in their extreme state of blissful happiness.
Lying there in each other’s arms, the couple watched as the time flew by them and the night slowly began to fall upon Ellesian. When the sun reached the horizon, Trilon turned to face his princess and placed a soft kiss on her tender lips. He began to pull back but she forced herself further upon him in a heat of passion. Lips locked in a kiss of such fervor as neither had ever imagined, dusk settled upon Ellesian and the waning moon rose onto the horizon. The kiss lasted for nearly ten minutes, each breathing short breaths through their noses.
When the kiss ended, Erilan’s lips spread into a tender smile and she laid her head back on Trilon’s rising and falling chest. Moving with the rhythm of his breathing, Erilan dreamt of never again leaving that place and remaining in the bliss that it created. She did not want to pry herself from Trilon’s loving arms but she knew night had long since fallen and the time was upon them for their teleportation to Jonadien palace to begin the end of the quest they had just embarked upon.
Erilan reluctantly rolled from Trilon and stood up to look over the hills of Ellesian back where she had come the pair had come from. Trilon soon was standing beside her, his arm draped over her shoulders to keep her from the chill of the night. “It is time.”

“Erilan! We did it!” Trilon mounted the top stair and dashed to the princess’s side, lifting her head and placing it in his lap as he always did to comfort her. He smiled down at her, knowing that she had went through so much and had not the energy to spare talking at the moment, so he did the only thing he knew of, he gave her some of his very power in order for her to be at least half as vivid as she used to be.
After he incanted the spell, Erilan’s eyes blinked open and she smiled up and Trilon. “We did it, the world is safe.” She said with some difficulty, her breathing was unsteady and her voice was a soft whisper.
“Shh. Do not speak, rest, and seek the shelter of your dreams.” Trilon said smiling down at the princess’s beautiful head that lay resting in his lap.
Yet, she did not follow his advice as she had done before. Instead, she looked up at him with tear-filled eyes and spoke softly to her only love. “I will not make it. He…drained my very soul…I fear that I will not be able to celebrate with you, my sweet savior. I love you.”
“Erilan?” He murmured, “do not leave me here. Do not leave this place that you have tried so hard to save. You can survive. You can make it. You—“ He became choked with tears as he looked down at the ashen face of his true love. She was rapidly fading and he knew that she would not survive.
A single tear fell on Erilan’s pale face and Trilon brushed it away uttering his last goodbye, “I love you, Erilan.” He stroked Erilan’s auburn hair as the sun set beyond the western horizon. The tears had disappeared from his eyes and a single thought came to him, I truly have failed even in this great success. As the sun’s final rays disappeared from her face, The Princess of the Beautiful Sunset closed her eyes and she was gone from the land forever.
