View Full Version : TRIVIA - Crystal Singer Series Part I

Dux
1st July 2007, 07:21 PM
Welcome to the Crystal Singer Series Trivia! The trivia will cover the three books in the Crystal Singer Trilogy (Crystal Singer, Killashandra Ree and Crystal Line).

This trivia will be slightly different from the trivia games played elsewhere on the site. We will start with 10 - 15 questions. As the answers are given, more questions will be added to this post. We will cover each book separately and completely before moving onto the next. While the books will be covered in order of publication, the questions themselves may not be in the order of reading.

The rules:

You may answer up to TWO questions in a 24 hour period.
I will keep track of how many questions each player answer correctly in the second post of this thread.
When we finish with all the questions a winner will be declared and a prize given.

Technically your answer is incorrect. The answer is not "the crystals of Ballybran". The question was looking for a very specific answer. However, if you can give me the exact answer in the next 24 I'll take it - you get first dibs on answering this question.

Bamy - this is the way trivia has been run on pretty much every site trivia game for the last 2 1/2 years. Once an answer is given/posted why would it make sense for someone else's to be accepted? I'm sorry if you didn't realize this, but your being upset about this just doesn't make any sense to me. You really needed me to say only the first time a right answer was given it counts? Then fine, I'm saying that.

It's only a game - not something worth getting bothered about. There is going to be well over 100 questions asked before this thing is done, you will have plenty of opportunity to catch up.

Scartine was one of the answers I was looking for. However, there is another place he is said to be from as well and the system of that place is mentioned too.

Also, Clodine isn't in this book (though I do believe she is also from Scartine). The other place name that Rimbol is from was also the home of a major character in this book.

So - your answer is correct. But it can also be answered again with different places and person.

Guild Master, Crystal Cutter (Singer), Chief of Research, Chief of Control, and Chief of Marketing

Re. population, my book numbers agree with Bamy. I'm using Del Rey, 2nd printing August 1982 as my source. P. 36 states:

"Killashandra was remembering the 20,007 technicians as well as the 4,425 Singers"

Remembering that some singers are inactive, totalling the technicians as well as singers would provide the closest accurate count of planetary population -- even though singers are going to be out on vacation or on assignment at any given time.

I'm presuming that a new singer can pay off their initial debt (for cutter, sled, ration, accomodation, etc... costs, based on a basic existence) in 7 months, 2 weeks and 5 days standard? 27 - In what year was the most damaging Passover storms?

2863GY is the only year reference I have found... The first passover Killishandra would have had to face was thought to be on a par with that year.

30 - Why does a singer need to pack crystal as soon as it is cut?

To reduce the risk of Thrall. Fresh crystal is prone to cracking.

21. They were upset with her because she had a Milekey Transition and they all suffered terribly with theirs.

26. A shepard is an experienced Singer who takes a newbie out to teach them how to sing crystal. Killashandra's was Moksoon.

15: If I remember correctly, Barry Milekey was the one who discovered that crystal resonates to sound and either devised or suggested sonic cutters. He is also the first to have what later became known as a Milekey Transition.

33 - Who were Tic and Tac?

They were the subordinates on the Trundimoux cruiser who were assigned to assist Killashandra. She never did catch their names properly, so she just called them Tic and Tac.

43 - Why hadn't Lanzecki warned Killashandra about "link-shock"?

Because to warn about link-shock is to inhibit the response. By not warning her, she had a truly genuine experience with no preconception of what would occur.

Susan

I should point out that this is a contest. In other words I can't take your answers unless it's been 24 hours since your last two. Which means these questions are still open to others to grab and answer. If your answers happened to be correct (and I'm not saying either way) someone else could steal them.

44 - What are the two extreme physical problems Singers face at the beginning of Passover? Not going to steal anyone else's answers at this point... I'm not that point obsessed... Now, if it were a post count issue...!!

Anyway, At the beginning of Passover, singers becaome exceedingly hungry, ravenous even, eating anything and everything in sight quite often, alá Killa & Lars when they travel with Brendan to the Jewel Junk planet in book three... But I'm ahead of myself!

After this immense feasting, singers then suffer with an overwhelming lethargy and the need to sleep for considerable periods of time.

Food, a neccesaries pack including clothing and spectrum lenses, Advice to play crystal singer to the hilt and pink tablets to counteract 'the sleepies'

35 - How did Killashandra get back to Ballybran?

By Selkite ship (which judging by the reaction from the lock attendant, stunk to high heaven!)

15. Who was Barry Milekey of Trace?

He was the leader of the team dispatched to investigate the geological resources of Ballybran, and the discoverer of the amazing qualities of Black Crystal.
He was also the first to experience a perfect adaptation to the symbiont.

me too. Most people around the site don't know this, but it was Trivia on the OKT that was the thing most responsible for my original first hundreds of posts. Whenever book trivia was going on I was addicted to it. Back then, on some of the games, one question was posted at a time and the next question wasn't given until the previous one was answered correctly. That meant you had to constantly check in to see if the newest question had been posted and then hope you saw and answered it correctly first. I think they stopped doing it that way when too many complained that it wasn't fair to those who came on during the wrong times or who could only come on for a few minutes a day, etc.

AidansMom
8th July 2007, 03:48 AM
I'd still prefer to be able to answer at any time within a single 24-hour period. I believe that using GMT would be fairest, so I could answer at any time during a given GMT day, but if I answered at 7 pm on one day, I could answer at 1 am the next day and both would be considered valid responses because it's only once within a given 24-hour period.

Just an observation which might be incorporated in future trivia games.

37 - What is Killashandra's most protected possession?

Privacy

38 - What was Killashandra's most immediate problem upon returning to Ballybran?

Well, she technically returned to Shankill, not Ballybran, but she needed to find appropriate housing since the Guild transient quarters were full up. However, she was able to go to the regular "hotel" room to fumigate after being on a Selkite transport as the only passenger in the oxygen-breathing compartment -- she reeked so badly that others couldn't stand to be in the same area as she was.
