View Full Version : Trivia - Crystal Singer Series Part II

Dux
13th July 2007, 02:43 AM
Welcome to the Crystal Singer Series Trivia! The trivia will cover the three books in the Crystal Singer Trilogy (Crystal Singer, Killashandra Ree and Crystal Line).

This trivia will be slightly different from the trivia games played elsewhere on the site. We will start with 10 - 15 questions. As the answers are given, more questions will be added to this post. We will cover each book separately and completely before moving onto the next. While the books will be covered in order of publication, the questions themselves may not be in the order of reading.

The rules:

You may answer up to TWO questions in a 24 hour period.
I will keep track of how many questions each player answer correctly in the second post of this thread.
When we finish with all the questions a winner will be declared and a prize given.

The questions in Part II cover the book Killashandra Ree, the second book in the series.

Here goes:

1 - At what place did Killashandra and Corish arrange to leave messages? The Piper Facility - Aidansmom
2 - What is the significance of Baleef's Voyagers? It was the opera Killashandra and Lars sang as a duet - Aidansmom
3 - What is considered to be a social grace on Angel Island? Singing - Aidansmom
4 - Why were buildings only constructed in unoccupied natural spaces on Optheria? So as not to disturb the natural layout of things. They wouldnt even move boulders. - Critterfiend
5 - What were Trag's six reasons for wanting Killashandra to take the Optherian assignment?
1. She was going offworld anyway and didn't have enough to take her past neared inhabited systems
2. An extended leave of absence was recommended by medical
3. She already had the skills required to place white crystal brackets
4. Her CV indicated that she had latent teaching abilities so could train replacement technicians
5. The Guild needed information about why the Optherian goverment prohibits interstellar travel to it's citizens. Killa was more diplomatic and tactful and thus was more suitable.
6. It was in the best interests of the Guild that she accept. He needed Killa away so that Lanzecki would go replenish his symbiote, which he hadn't had to do as he was using Killa's resonance to do the job that crystal would normally do and it wasn't enough to do the job properly
-Plat
6 - How long did Killashandra have to be tanked after her return from the ranges? 32 hours - Plat
7 - Who did Killashandra program eternal courtesy to? Bajorn - Plat
8 - Why did Killashandra wonder if Bascum was from Yarra? Because his brew tasted like Yarran - Critterfiend
9 - Why did Killashandra receive a shock when the schooner unloaded at Angel Island? Because she saw both Corish von Mittelstern and the man who had abducted and abandoned her (i.e., Lars Dahl) on the schooner, but neither recognized her - Aidansmom
10 - What two claims had been destroyed in the Passover storms? Keborgan's old Black claim and Moskoon's site - Plat (I also gave PQR half credit for this one)
11 - Approximately how much time has passed since Killshandra's Trundimoux Assignment? a year and a half - Plat
12 - Approximately how old is Killashandra? She is in her third decade (probably mid to late 20's) - Aidansmom
13 - How long did Lanzecki estimate the Optherian assignment to take? Why was this a concern? About a year. Because being gone for that long would result in Killashandra's losing of her resonance on her existing claims and being gone for so long would risk her going into "withdrawl". - Plat
14 - What woke Killashandra on her third day of her idyll with Lars? A drop in barometric pressure, heralding a change in weather and the hurricane. She felt this change due to the Ballybran symbiote and her Milekey transition that gave her a weather affinity - Plat
15 - What did Killashandra find odd during her research into Optheria? That there were no Optherians in either FSP Service or as Crystal singers - Kugai
15a - What else did Killshandra find odd? She found it odd that no Optherains left their homeworld. - Aidansmom
16 - What needed to be buried deep and encapsilated in permaform and then dropped into a sea trench? The shattered White Crystal from the Optherian Organ - Kugai (I also gave Sandi half credit for this one)
17 - How many singers asked Bajorn for info on travelling to Optheria? Who were they? Five: Killashandra, Borella Seal, Rimbol, Concera, and Gobbain Tekla - Aidansmom
18 - Why did Lars throw the Island weapon at Killshandra? As a favor the the Elders to confirm Killashandra's identity as a Crystal Singer. The Elders said that if he did this favor for them, they would re-consider whether or not to allow his composition to be played at the annual Concert series - Aidansmom
19 - At what part of the "angel" was the North port of Angel Island located? The North port, where Olav's offices were, were in the smaller deeper harbor which was the angel's "hands" which came together. - Aidansmom
20 - What four things are necessary to know how to sing? Projecting a voice, supporting it properly on the breath, phrasing the music and carrying the dynamic line forward - Plat
21 - Why was Mirbethan seated next to Killashandra for the first performance of the organ? Because Miribethan was Bisexual and they didn't know Killashandra's 'Tastes' - Kugai
22 - What three basic things are needed to survive on a Polly Island? An Axe, a Knife and a Polly Tree Manual. - Kugai
23 - What was Olav's official reason for coming to Optheria? Olav came on a short-term contract to provide security micro-units for the Council - Aidansmom
24 - What was Olav's unofficial reason for coming to Optheria? His secondary (unoffical) reason for going to Optheria was to discover why another agent had never returned - Aidansmom
25 - What problem slowed the ship's return from the Islands to the Mainland? The drive lost efficiency due to losing one of its green crystals - Plat
26 - What is the CS914? The brain ship Chandria/Samel 914 - Spacecowboy
27 - Of what is Lars found guilty? (please be careful to not also answer question #32 in your answer) Lars was found guilty of felonious assault - Plat
28 - What did Killashandra notice on her fourth morning of cleaning up the white crystal? On the fourth morning, Killashandra noticed that the organ loft area did't extend the entire the area of the stage. - Aidansmom
29 - Who is Blaz? Blaz is the Optherian Security Leader - Aidansmom
30 - What did both Killashandra and Trag do in testing the crystals for the organ that made Ampris nervous? Why did it make him nervous? Played part of the opening notes of Beethoven's Fifth. It was his key for opening the hidden section. - Spacecowboy
31 - What made Killashandra "hover above a new abyss of despair and regret"? The thought that she could no longer have children. That it was an impossibility, much like her remaining with Lars, emphasized how deep her emotional attachment was to Lars Dahl. - Aidansmom
32 - On what was Lars' guilty verdict based? Killa's psychological reactions during her evidence of extreme agitation and apprehension. Both reactions were deemed unusual when compared to her official profile. These reactions were interpreted as fear of the accused - Plat
33 - How much time has passed between Killashandra's return to Ballybran and the epilogue? about a year - Aidansmom

2:

It is something of a moral support for Killishandra whereas that such an austure, demure enviornment could produce such a fine singing voice, and that even though the Optherian Music classes didn't teach vocal, that someone could have the tenacy to defy the Elders and sing.

10:

Your answer to #2 is both confusing and incorrect. What you wrote seems like it is just a quote from the book (I think) and doesn't even go along with the question.

Question ten asked for the names of the two claims destroyed in the Passover Storms. You list four names. You need to list only the TWO names of the claims. You can have 24 hours to fix this one to the correct answer.

2 - What is the significance of Baleef's Voyagers?

Baleef's Voyagers is an exotic opera. Killashandra was singing the love duet when the tenor came in precisely on cue. They finished gloriously and then went into the recitative which follows. What Killa did not know was that Lars was the tenor and then she later fell in love with him. It's a case of irony.

12 - Approximately how old is Killashandra?

I would place her in her mid 20s because it says she's in her third decade (birth - 10 = 1st; 11 - 20 = 2nd; 21-30 = 3rd).

13 - How long did Lanzecki estimate the Optherian assignment to take? Why was this a concern?

Nearly a full Ballybran year. This was a concern because it meant that she'd lose any resonance to her existing claims.

14 - What woke Killashandra on her third day of her idyll with Lars?

A drop in barometric pressure, heralding a change in weather and the hurricane

Your answer to number 13 isn't complete. You got the first part right, but you need to add a second answer to part two. In other words Lanzecki had two concerns, you only listed one.

I need you to add a little more to your answer to question #14 too. Why did this wake Killashandra?

13 - How long did Lanzecki estimate the Optherian assignment to take? Why was this a concern?

Nearly a full Ballybran year. This was a concern because it meant that she'd lose any resonance to her existing claims. Another worry was that with it being so far away she could end up like Carrik was when his symbiote needed recharging. He was also worried, though you don't find out till later, that if she went he'd have to cut crystal to restore his symbiote. If he did that, he may forget Killa as he gets caught deep in thrall which affects the memory more

There are no other stated worries in my book. If there are more in yours... Well, I have the american books somewhere and can dig em out I spose.

14 - What woke Killashandra on her third day of her idyll with Lars?

A drop in barometric pressure, heralding a change in weather and the hurricane. She felt this change due to the Ballybran symbiote and her Milekey transition that gave her a weather affinity

23 - What was Olav's official reason for coming to Optheria?

He was originally sent to Optheria because of his expertise with microchip installations.

24 - What was Olav's unofficial reason for coming to Optheria?

His secondary (unoffical) reason for going to Optheria was to discover why another agent had never returned. When he had no luck with the covert assignment and was offered the shuttleport contract, he took the contract not knowing that he should not stay beyond 3 to 4 months to avoid being trapped there.

11 - Approximately how much time has passed since Killshandra's Trundimoux Assignment?

The ONE reference I find to a time span is over a year and a half. That was since the Passover storms had shattered Keborgen's old claim, so I am assuming that is the same Passover that Killa had left Ballybran for the Trundimoux assignment...

25 - What problem slowed the ship's return from the Islands to the Mainland?

The crystal drive needed tuned. They had slowed to take some of the pressure off the crystals, but due to the bracket coming adrift, one of the green crystals shattered, causing the boat to have to stop alltogether while Killa removed the broken crystal and reset all the others to be sure of no more problems.

20 - What four things are necessary to know how to sing?

Very strange in double checking my answer to question #19 I can't find it anywhere in the book. I found where Aidansmom got her answer, but I could have sworn I saw someplace where it was specifically said that the North Port was the Angel's elbow. The reference Aidansmom found doesn't specifically state the location of the north port - just that the two harbors (north and south) are part of the angel's outstretched hands.

I gave Aidansmom credit for the answer - but I wish I could figure out where I got mine from. Oh well, now I know for next time to not only write out the questions and answers, but also what page number I found my answer on.

Oooooo - just checked my book. In two separate paragraphs Killa actually uses the word "odd" for two different things.

In that case I have to give credit for the answer to Kugai for finding it first.

However, I have now added another question to the list above!

Killa's psychological reactions during her evidence of extreme agitation and apprehension. Both reactions were deemed unusual when compared to her official profile. These reactions were interpreted as fear of the accused

15a - What else did Killshandra find odd? That despite the obsession with organ music, other types of music such as her mystery vocal duet were actively discouraged.

30 - What did both Killashandra and Trag do in testing the crystals for the organ that made Ampris nervous? Why did it make him nervous? Played the first notes to Beethoven's 5th - which if they'd gone further would have opened the organ's secret compartment where the hypnotic equipment was hidden.

31 - What made Killashandra "hover above a new abyss of despair and regret"?

The thought that she could no longer have children. That it was an impossibility, much like her remaining with Lars, emphasized how deep her emotional attachment was to Lars Dahl.

33 - How much time has passed between Killashandra's return to Ballybran
and the epilogue?

It has been a bit over a year.

Man this staying up late to get past my previous 24 hour posting is hurting. I guess I'll have to skip a day and get back to posting first thing in the morning. I'll be at the bookstore tomorrow evening at this time -- waiting to get our two copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Kaitlyn and I get first shot at reading; Rowan will get my copy on Saturday morning when I finish (I'm guessing it will be a 4 hour read -- at most).

Is anyone else going to be at the bookstore at midnight buying their copy (or copies)?

Nope, I'm scheduled to w*rk tonight. So even though I'm on the list to get it from the library I may go ahead and pick it up on my way out the door in the morning.

26 - What is the CS914?

The brain ship Chadria/Samel 914 (I remembered the names as being slightly different, but double checking the spelling shows these names)

My book does spell her name differently - Chandria either way, you still get credit.

still no one has gotten 15a - but as that's a extra throw in question I'll move on to the next section of questions. BTW - my book is being delivered tomorrow, so once it's in my hot little hands I may not be here much - I'll try to get on for this thread if nothing else.

My book will be in my hot little hands in less than 6 hours and I'm NOT going to bed until I've finished it. Then I pass it to the 10 year old. The 12 year old will have her copy.

I'll answer tomorrow after I finish Harry Potter (or Harry Pooter as you called it earlier -- LOL)

15a - What else did Killa find odd?

That Optherians were totally self-sufficient and no Optherians left their homeworld. She thought that there should be some folks who were not suited to the Optherian organ who might want to make their way elsewhere in the universe.

I have to go to bed...
I have a kid that gets up at 5am and it's 11pm here.

As it's not my fault I couldn't answer two questions today within my 24 hours, will I be able to answer 4 tomorrow?
I'd like to say I'm not competitive, but what lead I had is being away by me not being able to answer questions within my 24 hours cos more aren't posted in time.

:hugs: to you Dux, BTW, I ain't being mean. but I''d like to have a chance of winning this and if I keep being able to answer 2 every 48 hours due to me being GMT and not being able to stay awake till stoopid o clock in the morning cos of the daughter and therefore missing when you post them... I may as well just quit now lol, cos I won't keep a lead cos to be honest all of us playing are pretty knowledgeable and if I can't answer the same amount of questions as they have the chance to then I'm screwed!

Sorry :sorry: - but I also have a RL of two kids, etc. to work around.

But no, you can't answer two questions. That would mean that everyone who couldn't make it here everyday could answer 2 for every day they didn't answer.

I know you can't tell this because I just keep editing my first post and there is no record, but I have been varying the times I put in new questions to make it fair for people in different time zones. They have been done in the morning my time, the afternoon, evening and late night. I can't do more than that.

Besides we still have a long way to go - we're only about half-way done.

Right then... So I play till this happens two more times then I quit. Cos it keeps happening. I was EIGHT ahead at one point now three. And it's not like I CAN'T be here to answer cos I work around things to be here a specific time every day which meant I shooed the social worker out yesterday early so I could answer only to find I couldn't...
