I was msning a friend and he mentioned how msn hugs actually work and it got me thinking that the Ship who Searched actually predicted this with the zen hugs!

Sort of. Although as the book was written in 1992, it didn't exactly take a huge bit of prescience. I got my first e-mail account in 1991.

OI was thinking of stuff like IM and fora where you get emoticons and smilies.

The first smiles ect came about on bbs's which was back in the 80's before the web got going ican remember using them at school on the ol'e hatfield poly link using a teletype!!!!!!!!
