They don't make adventurers like him any more (though Sir Ranulph Fiennes comes close).

I didn't know Sir Ed, having met him but once, briefly, in a Green Room at the BBC. But I did know Tenzing Norgay quite well, since he and my dad were quite friendly. Like Sir Ed, he steadfastly refused to discuss who'd actually set foot first on the summit.

But his opinion of Hillary was always warm - I can remember words like decent, modest, a good man, determined, kind, 'because he was an honest man, he sometimes seemed quite rude' and - 'he never treated me like a coolie - I was his equal'.

That seems a decent epitaph.

But his best epitaph is the legacy of schools, hospitals, dispensaries, and bridges he left in the Sherpa areas of Eastern Nepal.

A great loss, a great man, but at least he led one of the fullest lives in the history of the world.

He conquered the highest earthly peak, now he's conquered the highest heavenly peak.

RIP to a great man.
