Vertical Take Off and Landing???
But that's not a McCaffrey term - isnt it a universal term for vehicles that do that?

Yup, Lily's right, The EEC named the little flying bug critter after the convertiplane of the same name that can take off and land vertically.

Can't seem to find a quote in the books, but I'm pretty sure its in either the short story "Survey" or Dragonsdawn. But they ARE in the DLG and has a drawing of one. Here's what it says in the DLG -
Parasites were rife. Pern had numerous types of insects, most of which had not been noted in the EEC report. Buzzing flies, fireflies, and some types which the entymologists called VTOLS (for "Vertical Take-Off and Landing") where caught in large numbers around the settlement.

I've never heard of a vtol in any AMC books--just DLG

I know its in the books somewhere, but I just can't find it. It's either in Survey or D'Dawn. I wouldn't even credit its existance if it were not mentioned in any of the books. The DLG is riddled with so many mistakes i wonder what part actually IS true anymore. They need to make a new one with fixed mistakes and things that were left out.

As far as I know the actual term vtol is not used in the Pern books but only in the DLG.
Now if anybody can prove me wrong, I'll gladly admit I overlooked it :)

you're right, I don't think the actual *term* vtol is used in the books, but I distinctly remember it being described. If only I could find it...
