When I was about 12 or 13 the very FIRST sci-fi book I ever read was "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle and it totally mesmerised me. lol Of course I had to read the rest of the trilogy, my favorite was "The Wind in the Door".
I JUST found a brand new movie about "A Wrinkle in Time" :) and just finished watching it too! It's as close to the original book as I've ever seen a movie get so far :) It was so wonderful watching it with my daughter for the first time and she was as enchanted as I was at her age.
"A Wrinkle in Time" deals with the science of partical physics, in particular, tessaracts. We are introduced to the Murray family. Both mother and father are eminent scientists and have 4 children. The eldest, Meg, is our protagonist, and the youngest, Charles Wallace, is an incredibly intelligent, excentric, and gifted individual.
Dr. Jack Murray discovers the concept of the tesseract, then dissapears, which starts us on an incredible journey to save him and much much more.
HIGHLY recommended for young teen and preteen girls and as I've stated before :) something to share between mother and daughter.

I was browsing for books for my niece the other day, and lo and behold, the Trilogy I read years ago by Madeline L'Engle is now a Quartet!:
(1) a Wrinkle in Time
(2) A Wind in the Door
(3) A Swiftly Tilting Planet
(4) Many Waters
I bought it and am rereading it as we speak. It has been so many years I decided to start from square one again with A Wrinkle in Time

Been a long time since I thought about those...don't think I even realized it was a trilogy. I'm curious about the new book too, though I don't read L'Engle anymore.

after reading a reccomendation about this author on the old KT, I looked her up. my library didn't stock her, I am not sure she was published in the UK. I got hold of a second hand copy of 'a ring of endless light' over the internet.
I enjoyed it, she handle the subect of death and loss, with great sensitivity.
As I like dolphins, that was an extra interest for me, though I found her attitude/opinion of dolphins unreal and outdated. Mind, the book was written in the 80's! Madeline - A dolphins' 'smile' is not an expression of choice for them, and they can be very violent.
I would like to try more of her books, but will search for really cheap second hand ones, and ones with rave reviews, to conserve my pennies!

Yeah, I thought the movie was awsome...and since when was it a trilogy? I always thought it was a quartet.

It was a trilogy between the time that she finished the third book and the time that she finished the fourth book - after which it was a quartet.
I tried reading the books about the Austin family because one of the library books had a bookmap in the front telling which books were linked and it said the Austin books linked up with the time books. I was bored with them and never saw the connection. Of course, half the map was blocked with a library sticker
I really like the time quartet, though. What are her other books like? I only read "Meet the Austins" and the two right after that.

Back when I read the Wrinkle in Time books, I think there were only 3 of them - I don't remember reading Many Waters anyway. I'll have to reread the series with my nephew or niece one of these days and check it out. ;)
But while I enjoyed the Wrinkle in Time books, my favorites were the Austin family series. :good:
Brenda, here's a link to her bibliography... :bouncy: (http://www.madeleinelengle.com/books/)

Looking at the bibliography link that Dawn provided, the book Many Waters was not written until 1986. I read the other three in the 'Time' series about 1980, and thus they were a Trilogy at that point. I didn't know about all her other works though. Looks like I'll have to get cracking! I'm almost finished with Book 3: A Wrinkle in Time, as I write this. I'll probably start 'Many Waters' this Weekend.

Many of her adult books have nothing whatsoever to do with science fiction. But I find that almost all of them are absolutely wonderful (i.e. A Live Coal in the Sea, and A House Like A Lotus). She also wrote a series of autobiographigal books that were quite interesting. I've read every single thing she's written, except for her religious works.
