PLEASE READ FIRST
Welcome to the Spam thread! This thread has one reason – Spamming. All posts must fall within site guidelines (obviously) and NO POSTS MAY BE MADE AFTER THE FIFTIETH PAGE (2,500 posts).
Whoever posts the 2,500th post (the last on page 50) starts the new spam thread.
Apart from the above, anything goes. You may post as much, and whatever, you like. Many posts are contain ‘Spam!’ and subsidiary terms, such as ‘Spamsanity!’. There is no requirement to read anything posted in the periods between your last visits.
Post counts do not matter. Spam is not intended to be a race against time or for high post counts. Please do not try and one-up each other, and do NOT quote post counts in large amounts.

Here's where logic comes into play: How do you prove a planet has life like we know it--that is--carbon-based life? Answer: find free oxygen in the air! Free oxygen is a highly reactive gas that is only released in large quantities due to photosynthesis of from chlorophyll. Without plants to replenish the free oxygen, the air would quickly become unfit for life as the oxygen combines with minerals in the ground and is removed from the atmosphere.
Now we go back to Venus: What process can possibly be keeping its atmosphere so filled with highly reactive sulfuric acid, and at the same time be responsible for so much CO2 there? Something has to be replenishing the sulfuric acid. Answer: only ONE known thing--intense, planet-wide volcanism. Except we don't see any active volcanoes on Venus!
Which brings up one other factor about Venus: its strange rotation compared to the other planets. What could possibly cause it to have a retrograde orbit? It can’t be due to solar tides slowing it down—there are no oceans, and no moon to tug at them. After all, our moon actually has a larger influence to slowing Earth’s rotation down. Besides, tidal forces slow down the rotation until is matches the orbit about the sun—they CAN’T cause the planet to have a retrograde orbit! Only ONE known thing exists that could cause this, which, incidentally, would ALSO explain the features of Venus’ atmosphere: a large asteroid collision.
A collision that would be powerful enough to reverse a planet’s rotation, or perhaps flip it over, would shatter the crust like an egg, releasing the heat of the planet’s mantle. Any oceans Venus might’ve had would be instantly vaporized, the water blending with sulfur trioxide in the resulting magma to form sulfuric acid. Whatever limestone and other mineral deposits of CO2 Venus might’ve had would break down and release stupendous amounts into the atmosphere. The reason we don’t see volcanoes on Venus is the entire planet was a volcano and has only recently began reforming its crust. Carl Sagan and other astronomers knew these facts. However, without measureable proof, without an impact site they can identify, the astronomy community is reluctant to put the pieces back together to put forward a theory that explain this.
*snip*
So far, no one factor can be shown to be THE cause, although many recent articles about scientists refuting the popular cause of Global Warming say they’ve been looking closer at the solar output due to a sharp drop in the expected trend.
check the Venus facts. I'm not a planetary physicist but something there doesn't read right, especially considering the amount of posters that bombard you in this dept.
Solar output's been disproved but it's too early for me to look this up (and I need to start work)
Well, at least Boo and I have our medicine and will be on the mend soon, if I can get Boo to actually take her medicine that is. She's refusing to drink the sip or two of milk I slipped the antibiotics and Tylenol into, and she has this tendency to start wailing so hard if we dare try to give it to her with the dropper that she chokes.
Maybe if I stir it into some yogurt....
My cousin has some of her Cystic Fibrosis medicine in yoghurt or chocolate dessert things.

That statement ignored several key factors that show how this planet can NOT become another Venus through current human activity: Venus has no oceans to absorb excess CO2, the atmosphere is 90x denser than Earth's, and the biggest factor--the fact that Venus has an atmosphere with large concentrations of highly reactive sulfuric acid in its atmosphere!
...
Wrong.
Our knowledge of Venus's lower atmosphere used to be pretty sketchy (understandably, given the environment), but it's improving a lot these days. There's a pretty good alternative for the presence of sulfuric acid droplets in the upper atmosphere - photo-dissociation of sulphur dioxide, which then reacts with the water vapour. It's a lot simpler than invoking surface volcanism that doesn't exist.
As for the atmosphere - CO is the most common molecule in the universe after H2. A CO2 atmosphere is really more plausible than a N2 atmosphere for terrestrial planets. Venus is primarily CO2, with 3.4% N2 and 0.1% SO2 near the surface - the sulfur really isn't a scarily large constituent at all, just like water vapour in Earth's atmosphere. In the middle atmosphere, photochemistry kicks in on top of the thermochemistry, and converts the SO2 and some of the CO2 to sulphuric acid very efficiently - but note, it'll only remove a tiny fraction of the CO2. There's NO discrepancy at all in having H2SO4 clouds in a CO2 atmosphere.
Occam's bleeding razor, Ryuu.
Your argument has non-existent volcanism.
Mine has peer reviewed articles in the recent literature, well-understood laboratory chemistry, basic planetary atmospheric chemical compositions and the Sun.

I lucked out this morning.
Boo's been demanding to play with my keys in the car the past few days. I have several different key rings on one big master loop, so I just take my car keyring off the master loop and hand her the rest. Well, one day off schedule after a particularly rough night, and we got locked out. (I had my car keys in my purse obviously, or we wouldn't have gotten anywhere, but the house key was still on the master loop, which was laying on the hall dresser inside the locked house.) Luckily we'd gotten home before our neighbor, who just so happens to be the landlord's brother, left for work, and he has a spare key.
Happily this is the last field trip of the year, so there shouldn't be anymore need to get there thirty minutes earlier than normal again.

Anyone have any other ideas for getting a toddler to take their meds? I've tried the dropper, and after Mom accidentally shot Boo's entire dose of allergy medicine down her throat in less than a second last week when she hit the release just a tad too hard, Boo now freaks upon merely seeing the thing. The yogurt wasn't much better. She's getting into that hyper independent stage where it's, "I'll feed myself or starve," and she was more interested in playing with it than eating. Even when she's hungry, she still hasn't completely mastered the art of using a spoon since she keeps turning it sideways or upside down right before she gets to her mouth. We now have yogurt mixed with amoxil stained shirts and carpet because she's recently taken to spitting anything out if you dare try to help her get it to her mouth. And it looks like drinking is beginning to become painful because she's refusing to drink pretty much anything, be it milk or juice, mixed with medcine or not, and whether it's in a sippy cup, sports bottle, or valveless sippy cup. (The valveless cup just ended up being dumped over everything because we're just starting to try with those, and she's not so good with them yet.)
I'm down to calling the doctor if I can't get her to take her medicine within the next couple of hours to see if they have a suppository or injection they can do instead of three doses of liquid medicine, one of them rather huge, twice a day between her antibiotic, decongestant, and Tylenol. I really, really don't want to because I know it's going to do nothing but make her doctor phobia worse, but her ear drum is already bulging. She needs her meds now.

Anyone have any other ideas for getting a toddler to take their meds?
I am in NO way comparing your daughter to a rat, but when we have problems with meds and rats who are too intelligent to take meds from a syringe, sometimes squirting em into a little bit of cake works wonders! I know we tried it with Beth after three days of wasting meds and she crammed it in. Only a wee bit tho, enough to hide it.
Other than that I'm no use, cos wrapping a kid in a towel, having someone grip firmly round the neck and squirting the meds in before rubbing the throat to promote swallowing isn't really child friendly...
If she won't take the meds they'll prolly suggest IV meds, I know Aaron had that when he was too sore to swallow, he was in for two days.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I could give cake a try, but 6 mL seems like a lot to try to hide in cake. It's too bad ice cream ends up the same way yogurt does, because that seems like it might be easier.
I don't want to have to do a shot, but I'd much prefer that to IV meds. There's no way we could afford a hospital bill right now with the one from January's seizure, four doctor's visits, and our life insurance hitting all in the same month. Well, not unless I luck out, the former coworkers take pity on me and not only show up but say something about my party/website on-air, and I end up selling a thousand or so dollars worth of books at this week's party. ....That would take care of one bill anyway if I put all of next week's commission toward taxes.
Just 3 1/2 weeks left. Just 3 1/2 weeks left. Just 3 1/2 weeks left.
Surely things will look up this summer when we're not virtually making a second rent payment in our gas bill.
At least I did manage to get 3/4 of a dose down her, heavily mixed with apple juice, when given the choice between drinking the blasted juice or going back to the doctor.

What for lunch? Hmmmm.....
Boo's decongestant kicked in while she was still sitting in my lap and sipping at her medicine laden juice, so she's zonked out on the couch. She probably will be for the next three to four hours, which is good because she really needs the sleep.
I think I'll take advantage and grab a nap after I eat since Dad's going to want to keep her for a bit tomorrow before leaving for an eight month job on the far coast, and I can do the pre home show cleaning then.

A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives her the drink she says,

The bartender says, 'Well, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me.'

The old woman says, 'Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.'
'Coming up,' says the bartender
As she finishes that drink, the man to her left says, 'I would like to buy you one, too.'
The old woman says, 'Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.'
'Coming right up,' the bartender says.
As he gives her the drink, he says, 'Ma'am, I'm dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?'

Yep, 3 1/2 weeks left in the school year in the system Toph works in. They get out on the 23rd with the 24th as a teacher workday.
She ended up needing an injection to make sure she gets the full amount of antibiotic needed. Poor thing fell asleep in the middle of the floor directly after supper, so we put her to bed early. The extra sleep should help, and it seems like the Motrin was working on the fever and pain from ear and injection both.
Toph and I may head to bed early tonight ourselves. I'm fighting an ear infection, and the field trip left him with a bad headache. Plus, sleep is just helpful anyway.

There's some good advise there. I was very lucky and had pretty healthy kids. I think John has been on antibiotics maybe 3 times in his life (he's 16)...Lara maybe once, and the Eldest a few times too. I think we did actually have to hold one of them down to make them take their medicine. It wasn't pretty or fun, but it had to be done.

Night all.

Sorry, but I can't let this die....
Mine has peer reviewed articles in the recent literature, well-understood laboratory chemistry, basic planetary atmospheric chemical compositions and the Sun.three things--last one first.
#1: Evidently, they're (http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/planet_volcano/venus/intro.html) not so "non-existent" after all. Apparently, since Magellan, Venus has gone from "no volcanoes" to 1600+, which is exactly what should be there had such a collision happened!
#2: I never said there was a discrepancy in having a sulfuric acid clouds in a CO2 atmosphere--I was attempting to explain how Venus could have both sulfuric acid and such a dense atmosphere of CO2. What I DID say was there had to be some mechanism to replenish the highly reactive sulfuric acid. You point out sulfur dioxide, which only pushes the problem to ask "what replenishes the SO2?"--especially since numerous measurements from the space probes have shown the amounts of both H2SO4 and SO2 have declined then later were mysteriously replenished. Eruptions happening between probe visits fit that need quite nicely, thank you.
#3: About your own chemistry--for photochemistry to convert SO2 to be forming HSO4 in quanties, you have to have two very important things: Hydrogen (presumably from the sun), and a resuply route for your SO2....btw, sulfur dioxide is another biproduct of volcanic activity (http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1989LPICo.708....8E).
"In the middle atmosphere, photochemistry kicks in on top of the thermochemistry, and converts the SO2 and some of the CO2 to sulphuric acid very efficiently" -- in other words, you're saying "X(SO2) + Y(CO2) + energy = Z(H2SO4) + W(C-byproduct)"
Sorry, Kath, but you're getting a D- on the quiz for that one:shake:
But unless you can show that the Department of Geosciences at Oregon State University, JPL, or the people who developed their abstract (http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1989LPICo.708....8E) are less than reputable in the scientific community:shrug:
One last thing: I'm apparently not the only one (http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/080228-venus-collision.html) to come up with such a ****ed up idea as a "cataclysmic collision" to explain Venus' rotation and atmosphere. His paper was published just this last February and hasn't yet undergone a review of his peers.

Sheesh, Ryuu, I was merely using your OWN words in the counter-argument. If I can kill your argument with your own flawed logic, do I really need to lift a finger doing any more work?
Now we go back to Venus: What process can possibly be keeping its atmosphere so filled with highly reactive sulfuric acid, and at the same time be responsible for so much CO2 there? Something has to be replenishing the sulfuric acid. Answer: only ONE known thing--intense, planet-wide volcanism. Except we don't see any active volcanoes on Venus!
YOU were the one who claimed both the absence of volcanism and the need for it to be PLANET-WIDE. Yes, of course it's there - I'm not unaware of Magellan - but for you to simultaneously claim it to be on that scale and rule out in one breath.... Wow. That's a pretty spectacular failure for an argument, and all you can counter it with is missing the point of my hyperbole.
Weak, dude. Weak.
No, you said there was only ONE known mechanism, which is total bollocks. And then you handwaved Sagan and practically claimed that planetary scientists are ignoring decades-old theorising while twiddling their thumbs, which is an incredibly insulting thing to be doing. You know nothing at all about the scope of observations being made from the ground as well as from space - probes are fantastic and produce incredible results, but we don't just rest on our laurels and stick to one tool when we've got a whole range of others in our arsenal.
My gripe was with your seeming close-minded fanaticism and the ridiculousness of your argument, not with the mechanism itself.
As do the perfectly natural horizontal and vertical variations in H2SO4 humidity, which I almost mentioned in my previous post - Look at the state of H2O on Earth. Land a probe in Seattle and one in the Sahara, and just try and see how the volcanism argument, while plausible indeed certainly isn't the only mechanism for spatial and temporal variations.
As for what replenishes the SO2 - for heaven's sake, have you heard of the water cycle? The carbon cycle?
Well guess what? Venus has a sulfur cycle.
Yes, it has a geologic component to it, which will of course periodically insert new S into localised regions, but atmospheric chemistry plays the major role in balancing the different chemical species. Volcanism is the source, but chemistry is the supply-chain, supermarket and end consumer. Seriously, I don't have any problems with Venusian volcanology - just with the way you invoked it as both an unsolvable problem and the One! True! Way!
#3: About your own chemistry--for photochemistry to convert SO2 to be forming HSO4 in quanties, you have to have two very important things: Hydrogen (presumably from the sun),
WTF? What's wrong with good-old steam?
and a resuply route for your SO2
"In the middle atmosphere, photochemistry kicks in on top of the thermochemistry, and converts the SO2 and some of the CO2 to sulphuric acid very efficiently" -- in other words, you're saying "X(SO2) + Y(CO2) + energy = Z(H2SO4) + W(C-byproduct)"
Sorry, Kath, but you're getting a D- on the quiz for that one:shake:
No, I'm respecting the bulk of the spammers and not going into meaningless technical details. This isn't the place to reproduce rate equations for the whole gamut of chemical constituents, especially when all I was doing was addressing the link between two species with a third. If you've sufficient wits to spot the elemental hole, but insufficient wits to presume that I was iimplying a simplistic A+B=C[+D] reaction, then I truly, truly pity you.
But unless you can show that the Department of Geosciences at Oregon State University, JPL, or the people who developed their abstract (http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1989LPICo.708....8E) are less than reputable in the scientific community:shrug:
Wow. A paper with no obvious citations from 1989. You're hitting with the big boys now, Ryuu. Look, I'm going weak at the knees!
Seriously, I don't have a problem with their research, or any of the others. It's probably as valid as anything in that particular journal. The science you've attempted to convey in this post isn't completely adrift either, though your tone leaves a lot to be desired.
Also, if you're going to back-track on the facts of your arguments, I'd advise you to be a bit more honest, for your own sake. It's as transparent as vacuum, and while you may think you're clawing your way back onto solid ground, denying the flaws of your earlier posts makes you look like... well.
Others have said it far more eloquently than I could.
One last thing: I'm apparently not the only one (http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/080228-venus-collision.html) to come up with such a ****ed up idea as a "cataclysmic collision" to explain Venus' rotation and atmosphere.
No. Of course you're not. That's because you, me, next-door's puppy and Einstein's bacterial microbes are perfectly capable of drawing the same conclusion. Angular momentum doesn't just float off into the wide black yonder when it gets bored.
His paper was published just this last February and hasn't yet undergone a review of his peers.
The paper isn't a test of the original hypothesis - it's explaining the testability of his own particular model, and those of others working in the field. And it HAS been peer-reviewed, by simple virtue of the fact that it was already published in EPSL at the time of the article. Did you even bother to read the article you link to?
