PLEASE READ FIRST
Welcome to the Spam thread! This thread has one reason – Spamming. All posts must fall within site guidelines (obviously) and NO POSTS MAY BE MADE AFTER THE FIFTIETH PAGE (2,500 posts).
Whoever posts the 2,500th post (the last on page 50) starts the new spam thread.
Apart from the above, anything goes. You may post as much, and whatever, you like. Many posts are contain ‘Spam!’ and subsidiary terms, such as ‘Spamsanity!’. There is no requirement to read anything posted in the periods between your last visits.
Post counts do not matter. Spam is not intended to be a race against time or for high post counts. Please do not try and one-up each other, and do NOT quote post counts in large amounts.

Well, learning about the history of religion and things like that can be beneficial. But teaching it as fact... :shake:I suppose it was because the UK never had separation of church & state until long after Oz was independent. The Anglican church was Briton's state church, which Oz probably just kept due to inertia
Oz is a little bit odd for that sort of thing--just one of many such things:giggle:

Technically, the UK still doesn't. Bishops sit the the House of Lords (second chamber of the legislature - ie. the US Senate) and the PM still chooses the Archbishop and several other senior positions. Not to mention that the Head of State is also the head of the Church.

It is? How much notice do most jobs require. In England I think most require 2 to 4 weeks notice, so they couldn't expect you to start much sooner than a month after interview anyway.
I'm trying to apply at a store that recieves a great deal of applications at any given time. That being said, they don't have any current openings, and I couldn't start until after June 8th or so anyway, so I can't turn in my app yet.
OH ALSO on stuff like Craigslist, they want you to start right away.

Why weren't you allowed? Oh yeah, you are registered Independent and it's a closed primary. Still, I know you will vote in November.
See, what is exciting to me is that there is always bitching and moaning about how such a small part of the electorate actually votes here in the US. For the most part, this has been true...but not this time. This time, at least on the Democratic side, there are two qualified exciting candidates, whose supporters are fighting tooth and nail for the nomination. People are joining the process and are excited about it. The blogosphere has exploded with one side versus the other and who knows if we'll all get together and vote for the winner in the fall. People; new voters, young voters, minority voters, all are energized this year. It won't be "politics as usual" this fall. It won't be the same demographic that always gets out there and votes deciding the election...there's new blood and they are thrilled about participating in the process.
I am excited about Oregon's election next Tuesday (and Kentucky too). :d
I just hope somebody does something out of the ordinary in office as well
Yes you are - because you CAN'T vote.
technically primaries shouldn't count for really anything on the right to complain... since they are events for PRIVATE organizations.

The current median wage for the whole population is 23.7K. Would you really expect an entry-level wage to be higher than that, even for a professional? Especially since a single degree really doesn't give you much of the experience you need to merit that label anyway...

So was I as a student. But once you're working, you expect - and need - substantially more. For example, if you want to save up for a desposit on a house and to be able to fund a mortagage, you need to start now. And if you want to have a decent pension for when you retire, you need to start now. When you're a stuent, you don't have those outgoings.
Many jobs/industries require some closeness to London. Certainly my prospective career path, should I stay in this industry, does.

I have decided that Best Buy sucks. When we bought the computer the sells guy asked if we wanted them to install the anti virus soft. We said OK. He DID NOT tell us that for them to install the software it would cost $90. If they had told us that we would have done it our selves. THey also did not tell us that the computer CAME with anti virus software. When we took the computer back the REFUSED to refund the money we spent on having the software installed. They also refused to take back the anti virus soft because it had been opened. We are not happy with Best buy at all & will never but anything else from them. The store manager is suppose to call Mom on Sat. she was not in. I think that if we had taken a guy with us when we bought the computer they would never had pulled that crap. We told them that when we took the computer back. It was also pointed out, loudly, that they took advantage of an elderly woman in a wheelchair. That is when our name & phone number was taken & were told the store manager would be calling Mom.

Thanks for the support guys.
It's just so sad. We used to love spring, but now we're starting to hate it solely because that's when contracts come up for renewal. And they wonder why there's a shortage of teachers on a national level.
Um... Maybe it's because they treat them with zero respect, zero support, and then dump them like they're garbage at the end of the year unless by some miracle, they've managed to earn tenure. They won't even tell him WHY he's being fired basically, so there's not even anything for him to work on if and when he manages to get another position.
He's working on his letter of resignation now. There's nothing wrong with the system's budget, so not resigning would absolutely ruin his chances of landing another job before his owed back pay and insurance coverage run out. (The week before Sneak is due! Here's hoping I either go at 39 weeks or am able to talk the doc into inducing. :shake: )

That can't be good
I'm really starting to hope we get the new VW plant. Our little area's going to need it.
Oh, and Cos, all nontenured contracts are one year, at least in this state. I believe that goes for nationwide, but I'm not 100% sure. I know it's true for here in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. Those are the only states Toph's looked into thus far.
Is that likely?
How would someone like Toph go about getting a tenured contract and thus more security?

I had no idea the median wage was that low, I'm not sure what I thought it was, but higher than that. I'm increasingly not convinced that people should be trying to get a mortgage. I think the UK should adopt the same style of practise than I think many European countries already have, namely having most people renting. It's the logical assumption. Unless you want to tailor it to the nitty-gritty details of every single tiny little electoral area, that is the only way to summarise it. Certainly, that is how politicians and the media see it - after all, voting shares are always given in relation to how many voted, not how many people were eligible to vote.
As I said before, not everyone thinks logically, or uses your sort of political logic. You are dictating what they think, when they in fact feel much different than what you define as the logical conclusion.

Woah woah woah woah woah woah WOAH. I think it's a great comic book movie, but I wouldn't say the BEST. For me, Spider-Man 2 is the undefeated Champion, with X2 tagging closely behind, and Iron Man at a par with Spider-Man 1 and Batman Begins.
Too bad about the video game, I wanted to try it for PS3 :(

I'm increasingly not convinced that people should be trying to get a mortgage. I think the UK should adopt the same style of practise than I think many European countries already have, namely having most people renting. You may well rent the same house for years, so it would still feel like your home.
 It's a bad idea to rent long-term if you have a choice. It is waaaay more expensive for one, and means that when you retire, you don't have any physical object to show for it. And you can be kicked out if the landlord decides to sell.

Is that likely?
How would someone like Toph go about getting a tenured contract and thus more security?
Hometown is one of the top three spots in the running for the plant. There's this huge area that's been sitting vacant, owned by the city, and zoned for business/industrial use. Until recently, no one's shown any real interest, but the town's started taking off lately, mostly because it's situated right smack dab between Huntsville and Decatur, two of the fastest growing cities in the northern part of the state.
In order to get tenure, you've got to teach, within the same system, for three years and be renewed for the fourth. School systems are bad about bouncing teachers back and forth so they don't have to give them tenure. It's one reason so many give up on the profession and take up another.
Toph's considering a career change. He's been looking into Business and Accounting degrees tonight.
Annadel
17th May 2008, 03:52 AM
I hope that the graduation goes well :)
It did. Unfortunately, Toph and I had to leave early. It was held outside, and it was rather cool and windy today. (Cool for the area recently anyway. After weeks of 80 degree weather, it didn't even hit 70 today.) The ear plugs I carried to keep the wind from hurting my still tender ears didn't fit correctly and started hurting during the commencement speech. Then the cold started getting to my relaxin soaked joints, and I couldn't sit still anymore.
Turns out it was a good thing though, as I remembered to set everything up for SIL to bring Boo back to our house and watch her except to leave the key for her to get into our house. (Hey, I forget things when I'm rushed, and I was half an hour later than I wanted to be when leaving this afternoon to pick Toph up from work, so we could get a bite to eat before the graduation.) Luckily, Boo was very well behaved, even with only a thirty minute nap and it being slightly past her bedtime.

I agree that if you have a choice you should aim to buy, however not everyone has that choice. I have no idea how people who are on very low salaries with no hope of easily getting a better paid job could ever afford to buy their own place, however much they may wish too. You are a graduate in a job with good prospects. You are also lucky enough to still be able to live with your parents and thus save a good amount of your wages every month, not everyone is able to do that by a long way.
For example, my sis (who is a graduate, but quit teaching as she really wasn't cut out for it) and her fiancé are both in their 30s and currently in very low paid jobs. They are currently trying to clear debt and have no way to even consider saving money for a deposit (or even for the wedding they want to have). There is no way on their salaries that they would be able to get a mortgage on even the fairly small one bed flat they rent. When her fiancé has finished his OU degree and done further training, they hope that he will be able to get a job which pays well enough to allow them to clear all debt and save, but that is many years away yet.
Also the way the housing market is at the moment, I'm not sure how easy it is for anyone to buy for the first time, as increasingly few people are selling. My cousin bought a new flat last year, that seems to be the best way into property right now, but it is very expensive. Legal fees alone can cost thousands. I bet most people want to be able to own their own place, but unfortunately it just doesn't always work out that way.

On those odds I don't blame people for quitting. I've had years where I've considered it, if I was non-renewed at the end of any of those years I think I'd have looked for a job out of teaching.
It did. Unfortunately, Toph and I had to leave early. It was held outside, and it was rather cool and windy today. (Cool for the area recently anyway.
