Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough will continue their longtime Del Rey affliliation with a new series about spaceship “security cats” who develop telepathic links with their humans. The series was acquired by Sue Moe and Shelly Shapiro.

I really hope this series gets written. As much as I enjoy the Pern series, I'd love having a gorgeous Barque Cat that had a telepathic link just to me, even more than a dragon! :gag:

It's quite possible that Barque cats have absolutely nothing to do with the new series, but I'm otherwise at a loss to explain why I've seen that as a title a couple times recently. The Talent Barque cats always did have quite a lot of personality and clearly more intelligence then was explored directly, so it doesn't seem out of the question for them to be subject of the book.

One thing I'm curious about, is whether this series is aimed at the YA market or not. I'm hoping not as I've found their YA collaborations less interesting then the general/adult market ones, but with a subject matter of cats it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that was the aim.

Mercedes Lackey had a few short stories about cats in space an one that show up as having an ability to talk to his handler "Skitty" Copyright 1989 by the author reprinted with her permission in Tresaury of Great Cat Stories Copyright 1997. is the first one I found at the time there was a few more but where I don't recall. I hope this helps.
