i was talking on the phone to my mum earlier and one of the ladies she cleans for grows cannabis for medicinal reasons. she was telling me about when she was harvesting the stuff - the sap/resin on the knife was rubbed off by her finger and she licked the finger - her lips and finger went numb - does this sound like numbweed to you?

I have never heard of that  Perhaps someone needs to boil a batch and see if it works as a topical numbing salve.

Hmmmm...Interesting!
I wonder how we could get someone to actually LEGALLY test that notion?

A quick look online says that this plant does contain minor numbing properties that have been employed in times past as a topical analgesic. However, I suspect that Numbweed was a much stronger variant; having been pernese in nature. However, I wonder if Ms. McCaffrey based the fictional on the actual? The real thing certainly smells gross enough! LOL!

Interesting.
Every thing on this planet has a use. It's just a matter of finding it...before it becomes illegal.
I bet we could get a government grant to study this. We'd need a special authority under the circumstances.
Larry, I nominate you to try.

What would be wrong with growing it (legitamately by medical greenhouses or whatever) for creating salves similar to numbweed? I wouldn't think it would have any ill side effects as the smoking of it would. It could be experimented with to see if they can get more potency out of it. It would be much better than other sort of painkillers, which take longer to take effect. This would work almost immediately on the exact spot its needed.

O great and thanks a lot Wolfegar ;) get the preacher to boil some hemp after getting government approval... very good but I might have to retire early... The church wouldn't understand the way Pern Fans do.

Well... the cannabis has a potent smell a lot of people don't like but that is through the association with it's bad name and illegality.
I won't go and ruin good cannabis by going boiling a pot though :D would be an expensive waste :)
That numbing effect of the raw plant/stuff is new for me.
We're pretty relaxed in the home growing and use of cannabis here in The Netherlands, but... medicil cannabis is strictly controlled because they absolutely need to know its exact content and worth (as to chemicals, not moneywise).

Hmm, if Anne did base numbweed on it, that might explain some of the plot holes :redfruit:

looks like i have opened a real can of worms here. (oh and incidentally cannabis is illegal here in the UK - the woman in question is so ill that it would be cruel to imprison her and has taunted police to their faces by smoking it in front of them) she grows it for easing her own pain - it is not supplied to anyone. i just thought it was funny that the plant that does have an unusual smell had similar properties to the fictional numbweed.

See, that sounds like something that would be useful, and so it won't be used.
I think I'm getting this "Goverment Think" down pat. Frightening really.

I disagree about the bad smell. I am quite aware of its medicinal value, despite its illegality and unsavoury associations and I still find the odour of it revolting. I got a free sample of hemp seeds from the health food store for my dd (she's really stressed out) to add to her breakfast cereal, but I couldn't bear the smell of 'em! Thank God I hadn't had to pay for them. At least Canada and the US allow the use of hemp products to imported, so long as they cannot be used as illegal substances. I even have seen lipbalm and body lotion made from it. Just remembered!

I've seen hemp seeds in the store sold as a snack. :D The seeds look like they've been boiled and then roasted so they're puffed up a bit and crunchy. I didn't think they were all that tasty though.
There are a lot of different types of hemp, some that are used for cloth have such a low amount of the drug in them you could smoke an entire field and not get a buzz.

Hemp was grown for the government during WWII. My grandfather grew it on his farm for the government and they paid him. It was used to make rope and I have been told there was not enough THC in it to buzz a fly let alone a person. Cannabis has several medicinal values and doctors do prescribe it for some patients. It comes in a tablet that contains the medicinal stuff and none of the high stuff. Isn't modern science wonderful. Plants were put here first and for every ill of man there is a cure so it must be plants because that is the only constant.

Medicinal cannabis comes mainly in the regular self-rolled-cigarette style / smoked version here. I know it is especially effective/used by MS patients. The quality is strictly controlled and there is an organisation for it.
If anyone want sto know more about this go here (you can chose a Dutch and English version): http://www.cannabisbureau.nl/
