View Full Version : My first "job" in journalism

I finished my newswriting class last week, and after our final exams the instructor, who has worked in the industry for a couple of decades, took each of us aside and recommended the next step for each of us. He was aware I am Xfering to the university immediately.

First he asked me what I planned to do. I told him I was considering the Campus Press. He shook his head and in no uncertain terms he told me his opinion of the quality of writing there and to not wast my time. He then told me because of my obvious interest and conversational ability in sports (lots os sports chat in class), plus my writing abilities, that he had contacted the head of the Sports Media Department at the University and recommended me as an intern there in Sports PR.

OK, this is the University of Colorado. The last two years have been nothing but one scandal after another in the athletic department. This internship, should I choose to take it, would be a "baptisim of fire" in the world of journalism and PR.

I had promised myself I wouldn't get involved in college sports there, in fact, when I was choosing CU sweatshirts for my kids (as Solstice/welcome to your new home gifts) I chose the ones that had the least connection to the sports teams that I could find.

Now I find myself potentially dropped into the athletic maelstrom. I would have to familiarize myself with every team, every player, the histories of those teams and players, and probably deal with them and the coaches on an everyday basis.

:faint:

What did I get myself into?

You could always have said no thank you, that with your family you didn't think you could give the dept. all the time it needs to do the job justice.

Good luck with your new job, I'm sure you'll do just fine.:cane:

Well it might be a good learning experience....I don't really care for sports, but when someone gives you an opportunity??????

Hey, if you were recommended for it, maybe that means you'll be able to handle it! Personally, I prefer to stay out of debates and journalism, but that's me.
Know you've always had lots to say on subjects and tend to make sense.

Wow Lady Arwyn! Congrats! :bouncy: Baptism of fire no doubt, but at least you'll know early what you've let yourself in for when you start working after graduation.

Hi Lady A, congrats on the obvious compliment paid by the proff.

I was Rubydell before name change. I am in Boulder. It would be interesting to know how far the news of the scandles here have reached. It has been a really bad year for CU sports, but it all passes.

My recommendation is, jump at the offer!!!

Your work will prove your ability, not the mess the U is in.

Fantastic Arwyn - you deserve a break and this sounds like one!

I couldn't deal with all of that testosterone, but you sound like you've gotten a vote of confidence on your ability to do a great job in a challenging position.

Bravo! :ok:

lady a, you wouldn't have been recommended if you weren't capable of the job! it's entirely possible that your current instructor sees an ability towards damage control in your talents, and that's exactly what poor colorado needs :ok:

so go for it! :applause:
