"Saint" Robbie as portrayed in MHoP? Or a fallible human whose instincts just happened to be right 99% of the time?
Love him or hate him, you certainly can't ignore him :D
So what do you think about the MasterHarper of Pern?

I like Robinton but he is a bit of a busy body isn't he with a nose or finger in every pot. :D I think it's because he's very intelligent and wants to know why things work the way they do whether it's a weyr, a huge hold or a minor holding.

Almost reminds me of my mother in that way... LOL :)
I like Robinton though.. i think he does have his faults, they just aren't necessarily shown.. LOL :)

Like any man he has his faults... but they are so outweighed by his good points, and intentions, that they are generally ignored.
He wants to know everything he can so that he can help everybody to things the best way for the planet.

Robinton isn't perfect. He has his "weaknesses" (Benden wines come to mind), he isn't a "Grand Composer" like his father was, he is nosy and meddlesome....what saves him from being a PITA is his heart... He wants what is best for his people, Pern at large. And he can be dipolamtic when he needs to be. (A wall has two sides) In ATWoP, we see a man getting tired, his health on shakey ground.
I adore Robinton. That's not to say I wouldn't argue with him, or accept everything he says as gospel.

I don't want to rehash what others have said but I like Robinton and he is one of my favorite characters. I see him as neither saint nor busybody.

I think saying he's right 99% of the time is giving him rather too much credit. His heart's in the right place, but I'm not sure he or anyone put enough thought into what AIVAS meant, and in a way thus brought the Abominator problem on themselves. But I like Robinton all right, especially in DF where he's helpful but not a saint.
As for MHOP, I refer to it as the Apotheosis of Robinton and think it should be regarded as myth at best. Ugh. If I read that alone, I'd hate the brat.

Well, that right 99% might stem from the fact that in the books he doesn't seem to judge many occasions wrong :)
As for Saint Robbie... I dunno, I like the actual character Anne started out with immensely. I share my fondness for wine with him for one and I loved reading about a character drinking (what people probably would say) too much wine :)
I also agree that MHoP would have been just a good if nor better a book than it is now if Robinton would indeed be a little less perfect but, I said it before and say it now, I have liked every Pern book I have read, even if I do have preferences, and I wouldn't have wanted to miss MHoP because in the end it holds some pretty nice parts. Especially like the whole thing around the spoiled Holder's daughter (Halanna) and the scenes with Groghe and those early ones at Benden.

I like Robinton, as portrayed in the pre-MHoP books. I can read it, but it has too many inconsistencies with the others to really please me (female Craftmasters for a start).

I like Robinton well enough...might not if he didn't make me laugh so often. <G> 'Saint' Robbie was a bit much, but at least Anne didn't decide that EVERYONE loved him, even if they didn't like other harpers. heh

He certainly inspired enough hero worship, though (Menolly, Sebell, etc). I love him as a character and do think he would be a great master to be under.

Brenda, look what you started. :banghead:
Maiken, I wasn't referring to the bread. I was using it as an anacronym.

The way I see it....I understood that they (Brenda and maiken) understood what you really meant, but they were on a romp. To be explicit and completely clear I'll spell out the meaning I believe you meant AnneMarie:
P.I.T.A. = Pain-in-the-_______
where ______ is replaced by a synonym of posterior and donkey.
:tilt:
Zat right??
BTW...I do like Robinton in the original books (Esp. HHT), and he does get a little saccharine in MHoP, but I do appreciate the extra info and insight from MHoP, even if it has it's inconsistancies.

Personally, I always sort of thought of Anne and Robinton as being similar to Dorothy Sayers and Lord Peter Wimsey.

I think the picture by Robin Wood in the People Of Pern gives sums Robinton up perfectly for me...

My views on Robinton are as follows; He was funny, he was smart (sometimes too smart for his own good) he was loving, he was willing to take chances(i.e. Menolly) and he tried. He didn't always succeed in what he did, or not completely, but he tried. Isn't that what really matters in life? That we Try? Do you try every day to do what's right? Or do you just stand by and let the status quo roll over you? And the Dragons loved him best. And dragons are excellent judges of character.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he was a saint or anything like that; look at the relationship between him and his father. (Although I blame that mainly on his father)
When he died in ATWoP I cried my eyes out. But I did not immediately write a letter begging the MistressHarper to bring him back. In fact I congratulated her on knowing when to let him go.
I still love the MasterHarper, and always will. It is said that so long as one person remembers one who has passed on, they still live. He lives on in the memories of dragons and firelizards, and since they have hereditary memories, he will live forever. :note:

Robinton is a strong character who will stick in my memory for a long time. I cried when he died, (also when he had the heart attack and the dragons 'held' him - beautiful scene)
Robin Wood's picture captures him nicely - strong face, worry lines, twinkle in his eyes.

The character of Robinton before the MHoP is much more likable than after the MHoP. Robinton in the early books is wise and witty. After reading MHoP however his actions take on a completely different interpretation. That book changes him into a much more political animal. MHoP also changes the way one has to look at a lot of other people. An example being that when all the dragonriders, including F'lar, keep telling Lessa that Queens don't fly. That was taken as a 9th pass belief until MHoP was written. After MHoP it becomes a lie, because in that book all of the riders knew queen riders who flew. I prefered the Robinton that was doing his best for Pern and the Harper Hall to the Robinton who was control freak pulling strings behind the scenes.

Robinton has many characteristics in common with my mentor and best friend, whom I adore... and I adore Robinton, too. I like his participation in every book, including MHoP (a sweet book, but within acceptable limits to my palate). My mentor and I both have been chief academic officers of educational institutions, and Robinton is certainly the CAO of Harper Hall... and prior to becoming MasterHarper, was CAO in training. His experiences, dilemmas, style, and involvement are so like those I experienced... or observed my mentor experience... that I have an incredibly strong affinity for him. The fact that he is so like my BFF just makes me fall in love with him! Robinton is my very favorite character of the Pern series... next to dragons and firelizards. I'm sure I cried more over Robinton than any other character... tho "Admiral Bendon, sir, may I present the dragonriders of Pern" gets me every single time!!!!!
My kids, however, just love Menolly to death, and soooooo would like for there to be firelizards!!

Robinton is like everyone''s favorite uncle. He comes he sticks his nose in where it does not belong and then after the hens are out of the henhouse he leaves. Yes, everyone's favorite uncle. No matter how much trouble he causes he is doing it for the betterment of his "family" and as such everyone forgives him his idiosycracies. He was loved by almost everyone, those who did not love him at least respected him. He will be sorely missed by all his extended family here and there will never be another.

He's one of my favourite characters and the one that links the whole story together, even through the inconsistencies in Masterharper. Though, I think I'd have sent my daughter to stay with an aunt if there'd been any possiblility of her meeting the younger Robinton! :redfruit:
