View Full Version : Minimum post length...

What do you think of the minimum message length on the board? This is not a request to change the limit, I'm just curious. :)

I'll give my opinion after a few people have posted.

There's a minimum message length?

Beisla

Horrible. What if I want to post just a smilie with a link? It does no harm to have no minimum length.

There's a minimum message length?
Apparantly, yes. I didn't discover it, but when I heard about it I tried to send a one-character message, and got an error thing.

Also, I don't think a smilie with a link would be a problem. The link adds characters, I think it's a 10 character minimum, which may or may not include code such as links and smilies...

:banghead:

EDIT: I posted the above on its own, and it worked. The code for that smilie is exactly 10 characters.

Horrible, horrible, horrible! If you must have it, shorten it to three characters like on MoM. Please.

I don't mind it. :disguise:

It's going to make it hard to post single smilie links. Considering it's either not counting the URL tags with the URLs or it's only counting the whole thing as one character.

When I tried posting:

 (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041216.html)

by itself, the board told me my post was too short. Must work on a work-a-round....

Sorry for the double post, but the above was just to demonstrate that you can post a two-character smilie twice, if you put 6 blank spaces in between. It takes a bit of work, but that silly block can be cheated.

Occasionally my only comment is a single smilie.

God it's annoying! For example I like posting just an  smilie in response to something and boy is it annoying not being able to!

Mary
16th December 2004, 01:44 PM
I think it should be longer. I think we can all get lazy when we are posting and it is so easy to post very very short comments which do not really add to the conversation or debate. But then in real life people often just nod or laugh to show that they are taking part in the conversation so maybe we should allow single character posts. Now I have confused myself but I cannot change the way I voted.

I think that having a minum length is good, but 10 charcters is oo many, as i often just reply with a  a  or a  to some posts. Shorten it, or abolish it, PLEASE!!!

Anareth

If all you have to say is a smilie, you really have nothing to say at all. One-character posts are wastes of space. On one e-mail list I'm on you get reprimanded for one-LINE posts. Limits are good. They limit the clutter.

Annoying, but not terribly difficult to get around

Lady Cin

I never knew there was a limit...lol

I've always got plenty to say...but when I don't have a response, I just don't make a post. The thought of making a single smiley reply never even occured to me

:)

Perhaps, but it gets a bit annoying when you have to post nonsense or something irrelevant in word association for instance. Not the most important thread around I know, but this place's about having fun and being silly as well. However, I suspect that option is one which has to be set board-wide rather than for particular forums/fora. My posts, except in the silly threads, are rarely shorter than at least half a line (30 chars?).

ladyholdermara
16th December 2004, 05:54 PM
I would've said to shorten it to 5 characters but after seeing some of the comments on here, well lol I STILL don't know.

I AM curious about something tho :)

On one thread I found a post I obviously accidentally did with JUST the characters :/ on it, I edited it afterwards but wonder, why did the restriction not apply to that thread? lol Unless I when I accidentally hit those characters I ALSO hit a bunch of spaces lol STILL can't figure out how I did that lol

I'm just going to say 'make it shorter' for the sake of the word-chain posts. Like, if you just want to say "mouse." that's five. :)

But I'm not very constructive.

I think I clicked the wrong option up there.

I think the minimum is a good thing. Make people WORK for those post counts! None of this "I agree" and that's it.

17th December 2004, 02:48 AM
I voted - a good thing, sorry folks.

The reason? I understand that smilies reflect a persons feelings on the subject or previous comment, but find it irritating having to continually scroll past them, not to mention the signatures (yes I know I can switch off, but some are funny  ) to get to the more pertinent sections of the thread.

Kugai
17th December 2004, 06:51 AM
Shorten it down. Sometaimes a Post only needs a single word reply.

Gryphon
17th December 2004, 01:41 PM
I think it stinks. On the post about our soldiers all I wanted to post was a simple "Amen". Had to add to it because of the minimum post length. Don't like it. It stinks. Hate it, in fact. Change it, change it, change it!!!!!!!!!!

Hans
17th December 2004, 02:36 PM
I fully agree with the 10 characters minimum.

If Gryphon wants to post Amen, a serious answer to a previous post, he can also post: I fully agree, Amen or something along that line.

Personally -- not talking as the admin here, so you don't think my word is law :) -- I agree with thos who say that less than 10 characters is no contribution and there is always a possibility to make a sentence! in stead of posting a word, which is ever so much nicer!
Posting only a smilie, or two, should be abolished for all I care, even if it is nice and fast it takes me longer to read such a reply than it took the poster to make it :redfruit:

Kater
17th December 2004, 03:24 PM
I agree with the shorter then 10 characters because in the case of Word Assosiation threads or where a one word answer may be appropriate I think the ability should be there. Then again what do I know ;)

granath
17th December 2004, 04:46 PM
I think it's silly to try and force posters to post in a certain way. I thought that Amen would have been fully appropriate as a response to the poem.

I'd rather have postcount deductions for l33t, lack of punctuation or lack of capitalization in posts. Use the shift key, and use punctuation if you want your posts to be read. And for goodness' sake use apostrophes! :2cent: :box:

Hans

I had something else to post here, but I've read the entire thread now. It seems the limit was lowered to five characters. I think this was a good compromise, and am glad it hasn't been removed entirely. :)

I also ask that the poll be closed, as I see no point in dragging up a thread that seems to stir such strong opinions (myself included) just because some person decided to vote. :banghead:

CalNo, unfortunately that doesn't work. It doesn't count codes as characters.

It's too bad, because on the old board there used to be a thread in G&S called something like 'Silence' and people posted posts with nothing. It was fun!

The sound of silence was very relaxing but alas, as has been stated, code doesn't account for characters so we'll never see totally blank posts whilst this restriction remains.

I'm sure it's against our civil liberties somewhere, somehow?

Is this a record? This thread lay dormant for more than 14 months before being wakened from the dead this morning!

Anyhow, I see the minimum post count is down to 1 character now. I guess some are happy but personally I think that if you can't be bothered to post at least a sentence on something you're probably just post-count-upping, spamming or "me tooing". I'd really rather hear what you think on a subject or at least get a humourous riposte than just see a pre-set smilie or whatever.
