You see, I was wondering what others do at "gathers". I was planning on planning one for my county and city(part of my city goes into the next county). :D

In the UK, we've had general meet-ups (usually in a public house environment!), some trivia sessions, a visit to Blackpool Pleasure beach and the National Space Centre in Leicester... We've had meals in, meals out, a bonding, songs, plays, readings and all sorts... I've heard of others doing egg hunts and barbeques for instance...
A gather is what those who attend make it :D

The infamous fire lizard egg hunt was my brain child for a Florida gather at a state park beach.
Let me know if you need details. It worked out rather well. The fresh baked bubblie pies were also well received.

At The SoCal Gather I went to last year, Sharon barbecued a bunch of chicken, and we and other gatherers also brought other dishes to share besides the chicken. We also had cake, and other desserts, and they had trivia, and coloring pages and tree climbing, and pictures taken as well.

For an exceptionally fun gather, try to have Koolness attend.

I'll go if some one else pays my way.

Please, no suggestions about specific locations, for I already know where I'm going to have it , but I'm not allowed to give out any information like that.:shhh: Any suggestions on what to do?

One activity that seems to occur at every gather is the sharing of food, beverages and conversation.
After that it depends on the general theme of the gather which might be linked to its location. If you are meeting at an amusement park, activites are pretty obvious. Other locations may be condusive to costume contests, playing games, or a bake sale - proceeds to benefit a charity or web site or something.
Music is usually also a part of gathers.

The So. California Gathers are held at a park. We reserve a shelter which has picnic tables, barbecue grills, a big counter thing where food can be set out. It is also right next to a playground area for the kids (and adults) to play in. At the October Gathers we have fun with costumes, In June we try for different activites including kite flying.
We have done raffles, which help defray basic expenses, and give people chances at prizes. We have done white elephant gift exchanges and painted pumpkins.

The place I was thinking of holding a Gather is by a river, which has a pretty good place to hide "fire lizard eggs".

I already have a location that I will wish to hold a gather, but what to do!?!
Faren
3rd May 2005, 08:22 AM
Well, the first thing to do is let people know where you want to hold your gather, and then when you want to have it. Then people can let you know if they can come and how many so you can figure out food/games/etc.
So more information needs to be forthcoming. :D

I can not say either. If I told you where I would hold it, then you would figure out where I live. My mom thinks that it is giving out too much information. Anyway, I need to know what to do to make sure I have everything before the time, but it might be during the summer. MIGHT.

In that case, it's probably not a very good idea for you to plan one. Perhaps you should just check the other threads, and if one is being planned somewhere near you, PM some of those planning to attend (with your mom's permission, of course)

OK, I understand that. So is this gather going to be for a group of your friends? That would be a really cool theme for a party I think!

I was thinking that it could be a gather for my county so we could raise some money for some charities like the woman's shelter.

Well that's an excellent idea! :good: However, that's a much bigger undertaking than the gathers that members here have. If you were thinking on a smaller scale, such as a class gather with the funds raised being designated for a charity, that could be cool. You could sell bubbly pies and have a cake walk maybe. You could also raise money with the firelizard hunt by having the "contestants" pay for a chance to find an egg.

Ok, who's Koolness? Koolness is a lecherous creep who nobody likes.
By which I mean pretty much EVERYONE likes him because he's awesome.
Still lecherous, though.
He maintains Pernese Friends (http://groups.msn.com/PerneseFriends/welcome.msnw), a collection of photos of folks from the Old Kitchen Table and Dragon*Con and gathers and such. There's a picture of him on that site (you can find it under the Index of Pictures), and Ian's got a few here (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/JohnKoolHeide.html) (Kool's the dude in the middle), here (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/Kool.html), here (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/JJKoolKat2.html), and here (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/HeideKool.html). You can see him featured here (http://www.brownridercat.com/pics/dc2003/nrfjp1.jpg) and here (http://www.brownridercat.com/pics/dc2003/nrfjp2.jpg) with a naughty magazine during Weyrfest 2003's Not Ready for Journeymen Players improv sketch (Fun Fact: the dude behind him in green is Steve, this year's Weyrfest director. Anneli's the prim one seated at the desk, and I'm the one in the red-and-blue get-up with some sort of crazy-weird facial expression going on in that second picture).

Lecherous..... yes. *snicker* I can think of a few around here like that, but he definately rules the roost. He also runs Pernese Friends (http://www.pernesefriends.com) the forum.
A gather is not what you make it, it's the people that come. Don't stick so very hard to your plan if people don't really seem to be having fun with it. Have room to maneuver. A gather is mostly an excuse for folks to get together and enjoy each other's company, since we so rarely get to. THAT is what most of us mean by gather.
Now, if what you have in mind is more of a Pern themed party, by all means, go for it. Raffle things off, as has been mentioned, a bake/craft sale would be awesome, if you're wanting to raise money. Costume contest, fashion show, showcase the crafts of pern with competitions, and then auction off the entries. It could be quite a bit of fun!
.... "What is a Koolness?".... Sorry, that just got my funny bone. :D

Back to the original subject.
One Winter gather we went to Madison Wisconsin and frozded or tucasses in a Church camp. We huddled by the fire, slept in bunk beds, went to town to eat lunch, went to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, <I'm no longer a virgin> Cooked in the church kitchen and spread ourselves out to eat way too much food, and spent as much time as we could together.
Beware the After Gather Blues!!!

Back on the old KT, she started a thread about having a hard time finding a quality boy friend.
I instigated several things from that thread which lead indirectly to her and Jimi getting together. So it may be partially my fault that they are getting married.

:haha2:  @ Kool
Queenrider Melody, I had a look at your profile, and considering your age, I would suggest you be very careful about posting any specific location. I understand your question, and the answer is -- You do anything that is fun at a Gather.
I've been honored to meet about a dozen KT/KTLer's in person, and hope one day to see some of them again and meet more! Most of those meetings took place in Las Vegas during my aborted attempt at surviving there shortly after 9/11/01. Usually it was just a nice lunch, or even just a cup of :coffee: . But always good conversation and fun! :)
I can understand your wanting to have a Gather of your very own, but I do urge caution. Everyone I've met from here have been wonderful, but also have been adults. If you truly want to have a Gather, and have folks from the KT/KTL attend, they need to know where it will be. Once they know, you will get more suggestions about what to do than you'll ever have time for.
Perhaps you can get your Mom to register here. She can check the place out and post any information that she thinks is safe...
The above is only a suggestion, but I make it because I don't want to see you get hurt, or into trouble. :)
Take care,
Mikey
P.S. I wonder? Are Tiggers :cat: really who's and not what's? :runaway:

If DragonCon in Atlanta is something you and your Parents can afford, it would be a safe and very fun way to meet many KT/KTLer's. :ok:
