Is coming out here in Oz soon - now i am a major Clive Cussler fan and i know he said there would be no more movies of his books after the Raise the Titanic fiasco from years ago... And now here we have Mathew Maconauhey playing Dirk Pitt (what the?) and Steve Zahn playing Al Giordino (huge what the???)...
Has anyone seen the movie (the only casting i like the look of is William H Macy as Admiral Sandecker and i like the look of the guy playing Rudi Gunn) and has anyone who is a fan of the books seen the movie? The movie website (www.saharamovie.com) makes basically NO mention of the book at all - let alone that the book is number 15 (i think) in an ongoing series...
Is it worth the $17 to go and see this one - or am i going to be really disapointed?
Anyone, anyone ;)

Edited to Add - ok - just found this on Clive Cusslers official site (well Numa is as official as he gets) and it isnt promising http://www.numa.net/film_and_television.html despite the little thing on the side that says Sahara is being released....

Dai, I haven't read the books, but have seen the previews, wouldn't go watch it at the movies though - does it really cost you $17 to go?!?!? :faint: and I thought paying $14 was bad!!

I didn't know this was based on a book, and I have no idea what the movie is about, but the ads looked really cool. But oh my, $17 or even $14 to see a movie is overkill! Here I thought $9 for an adult was a bit over the top :faint:

I've seen some of the movie trailers and my first thought was "what the ....?" I didn't see any reference to the chemical dump that was such a huge part of the book although I did get a glimpse of Kitty's plane, I think. They seem to be focusing on the treasure and not the rest. I'm not too sure about the actors, I mean Dirk and Giordino are described so well and quite frankly, this guy doesn't cut it as Dirk. Giordino is always described as short and very heavy through the upper body, *shakes head* again, not too sure about this.
I've read all the Cussler books as well. He's one of my favorite authors and I'm first on the list whenever a new book comes out. :hopping:

Agreeing with Mausey. Those two do NOT fit the way I think Dirk Pitt and Al would look. Though I must say, I do like to look at Matthew McConaughey. :heartbeat

Ok, so againsnt my better judgement my housemates dragged me to Sahara last night...
And it wasnt as bad as what i was expecting.
Main Casting Sucks Arse! Dirk and Al, no way in hell do those actors look or act like how i imagine Dirk and Al to be... Steve Zahn was so wrong that it almost hurt, but i still found the dialouge between those two funny, even if it wasnt sounding the way Al and Dirk would say it... (Al isnt dumb for example, no way in hell is he dumb)
Secondary casting i thought was spot on! We all love William H Macy and the guy who plays Rudi Gunn looks like Rudi Gunn...
Too bad they changed some important details, like NUMA not being a government agency, Rudi not being second in command (and being WAY to bumbling) and where oh where were the turquiose boats and vehicles... And those details were aside from what they changed in the story line...
It did follow the basic story of the book, very simplified (obviously), my housemates who havent read the books, enjoyed it about as much as i did - but for different reasons (penelope cruzes arse for one), i liked the stuff that did come from the book, where as that was what they found far fetched etc etc...
There are enough clues to the book and the other books to make it fun for the reader... The guy sitting next to me (his wife was bored) was obviously a fan, we had shared moments of "The orange faced doxa" (which was shhed by my housemates and his wife) and the fun Dirk Pitt car moment...
Something i didnt realise before last night was that Matthew Maconahuey was the Executive Producer... So i am assuming he is the reason this one was made, he may just be a fan of the books which may explain why it was made. Makes me wonder if there will be more?

Well I read the book, typical Clive Cussler stuff, very entertaining. I read a couple of reviews that basically said " Brilliant if you're into boys-own type action and adventure" so it'll suit me, I love all that stuff, pure escapism.

I forgot about this thread when I went and watched the movie a few weeks ago. I've never read the Dirk Pitt books, so I was clueless about the changes. ;) I did enjoy the movie though. :D
