View Full Version : All Things Twink

With the loosening of the fandom rules we've had a whole slew of new clubs poping up. And while many of them look good, others I can only call twinky. So I'm asking everyone here: What are the things that you consider to be twinky.

Weyrwoman who are 15 (and oh yes, I've seen it), female bronzeriders (heck, I hate female brownriders), people who give themselves a lot of positions in the Weyr, riders from Benden.... Need I go on? Hehe.

...people who give themselves a lot of positions in the Weyr...
That one might make my list, too, depending on the rest of the club's twinkiness. If you don't have members willing to play rankers that storylines demand, then you only have two choices: BoD NPCs, or write the PC yourself. Most day's we can't give rankers away at Rocky Crater.
Other things that I find twinky-ish are Weyrs founded by the really young gold and / or bronze -rider who just happend to find the location, and were given the position despite their ages. Clubs that have 3, 4, or 5 queens, and yet not a single blue or green -- espeically when those are the only PCs in the club. It might be more cliche than twinky, but clubs that start out with a hatching. Odds are you'll get mainly writers looking to win the gold egg, not to actually stay around and write long-term. The quality of the persona sheets they approve is another thing to look at. The more cliche and / or detail-less that they are, the higher the twinky factor.
That's my :2cent:

Sports that would NEVER happen!.............Black with silver swirls??? Someone fetch me my spork!
Another thing...........Multiple impressions............'Hi, I am Weyrleader. I come from the future and have not one but TWO dragons! One Bronze, one Gold! *gasp* Both impressed at the same hatching!!! One of Ramoth's no less!' *Puhleeeease!*
That brings me to the male Queenriders.............*dies*
And general Mary and Gary Sue-ness.........
*not going top carry on with this....*
Thankfully the Weyr I co-run seems to be lacking any of the above so far..........That would be Paradise, in the siggie......
One day it might pick up lol.
And, I would rather play Green or Blue than Gold...

That's how we got one of our BoD! Her first character was a tad cliche (but she's better now) but we kept talking her into taking this character and that character and a rank here or there...and now she's on the BoD, and of course is rank-overloaded. (Does ANYONE want to be a Weyrlingmaster? Come on, people, why are these positions so hard to fill? Everyone claims to want a brown or a blue and then they go straight for the shineys....)
I personally speaking would much rather play a Green Blue or Brownrider!
I am Greenrider Weyrlingmaster at Wylder (I also play a Green weyrling at the smaller weyr there), and only hold a Greenrider weyr charrie at Paradise. I would rather take the non ranking! You often get more play out of them!

I suppose you could say Affray is "twink by design", if the lots of queens and the BOD thing is the requirement to be twink, but we thought out the club very carefully, and one of the things we decided is that people spend way too much time trying to GET their character, and too little time actually PLAYING them.
From our perspective, twink is people working very hard for rank, and then dropping off the face of the earth after they get it, leaving other people in the lurch.
We decided to give anyone the rank they wanted, and invented the concept of the Limbo Wing for disappearances. If you are inactive for a specified period, your character goes into Limbo Wing, and if you ever come back you can have them back.
We also re-elect all our officers every 6 months. That way if someone's burning out, they don't have to run.
Lots of people have told us that our way doesn't work, but we've been very happy with it.
Affray Weyr- "Twink By Choice!" (This may be our new logo....)

Hmm. There's very little that's more twinkieish than a clubful of Mary Sues, of course...
Blue queens. Yeah. I really did see that. (It was in fanfic--does that count?)
Weyrs where all of the dragons have word names. EG Moth, North, Zenith...
Wherholds. Come again?
I've been in a Weyr with blue Queens. I had one too. Neopets has the most insane Weyrs. But I have the most twink of all... A Weyr where all the dragons were made out of candy, and were named "Reeseth" or "Mandmeth" and things like that. *shakes head* They were serious too, or so my friend said. You know, I've always wanted to name one of my greens Moth. Hehe.

With the loosening of the fandom rules we've had a whole slew of new clubs poping up. And while many of them look good, others I can only call twinky. So I'm asking everyone here: What are the things that you consider to be twinky.Hmmm... Hard to say. I'll just list some of my main peeves.
'Perfect' characters. You know, beautiful, kind, intelligent, masters at their craft at an insanely young age, and hoping to become bronze/gold riders.
Places that have young characters in high ranking positions. I'm not talking about people who are young in real life here, people who have young characters.
Female bronzeriders and Male goldriders.
Other colours. I like to stick to the traditional five, unless there is a VERY good reason.
Insane amounts of firelizards. Ten is more than enough! It's the most anyone had in the books, and that was Menolly, who was an exception. (She impressed another bronze some turns after impressing her other 9)
Excessive thought-posing. My character can not read minds.
People who can not seperate reality from fiction, and think that if someone likes/dislikes their character, that that person also likes/dislikes them.
A character with the cliche 'tortured past' turning out perfectly normal. (Often coupled with the first problem on my list)
Multiple-birth characters. Twins are okay, if they aren't done often. But triplets? I admit, I did triplets once. I still cringe at the memory. But at least I made them be very sick little things, guaranteed to never impress. I still wish I hadn't done that at all. I was so new back then. A lot of things I did back then make me cringe now.
People who aren't even willing to give new (and sometimes bad) players a chance. I was lucky, I found a place that was great to new people, and I tried to be just as good to people newer than me.
These are the main things to avoid.

People who, even after several months of writing, *with the help of a moderator* still turn out posts like this:
S'pid tinhks I need to do thsi 'kause it's kool an' I go do it
I swear to god, I've seen posts like that. That short, too ... and the people that wrote them think it's a great post. It's actually worse when you have two or three paragraphs like that mashed together.
Now, I have nothing against newbies ... we all started at some point, and not all of us are naturally gifted as writers. Heck, if we were, we'd be the ones that kids somewhere were writing stories based on our books! But when said newbie still cannot grasp the basics of spelling and grammar after several months of help ...
or worse, Weyrs where such writing is the norm, and accepted!

Colours that make no dang sense.
At least in my Weyr, it was stated that they were the cause of a genetic defect, or something.
A Weyr that has no original colours.
The rankers are run by a group of egotistical perfectors that have overrun the Weyr from it's original owner.
Male goldriders, female bronzeriders (I met one, and she was very nice. But most ones like this.... nuh uh.).
White (non-canon) as a common.

A Weyr that has no original colours.
By "original" do you mean they don't have any of Anne's original colors (as in gold, bronze, brown, blue, green) or you mean didn't make up non-Pernese colors? Because if it's the former I'd say that's not even Pern. If the latter, I'd say it's the presence of a wide variety of non-canon colors that's the indication you're venturing towards the fluffy white filling in the yellow spongecake of twinkiedom.

I meant the former.
I've been in a Weyr where it took place on an entirely different planet, and they were already switching planets because the first planet threw them off. I'm not sure if they were originally on Pern, then left, then came back, or the other way around...
I've been in an underwater Weyr. It was actually quite interesting.
But otherwise, yeah. Those Weyrs will never make sense to me.

How did they -do- an underwater Weyr? Just curious.
Speaking as someone who can't GIVE rank away- I own the North Ranges Hold family with the exception of one daughter (Bless you, Sue.) Can I get anyone to take one for more than a month? Nooooo... they're ALL adoptables except the baby (who might be a challenge to play when he grows older, as he will develop moderate MR...) and the Lady Holder. I just play them cause no one else will, and you can't just... let them rot.
