the spore contributes to the problem. but from the third book "crystalline" there seems to be a build up of static? or something like that. because when killa had the encounter with big hungry junk, it cleared out all the confusion. sort of like static electricty shocking when youn touch something metal. what do you guys think?

As someone with a afinity for crystals here on earth and having been to a crystal rich area of the country, I can quite understand the lure ballybrans treasures! Whilst searching for crystals, I found a whole vein of fluorite and was completely 'thralled' by it. I spent a timeless period just looking at it and touching it! I had to be brought back into the real world by the family members around me!
I can imagine the concept is similar yet more intense for singers. They would be in tune physically and emotionally with the crystal quite literaly and I'm sure it would feel like a part of them, sorely missed when they weren't out in the ranges!

I think the vibrations of the crystal, even without the singing, may contribute to the hypnotic aspect of thrall.

Very true... if there's an even, tolerable hum to something and I'm already concentrating I tend to get drawn in even further. So very good point Brenda!!
And yes, the spores also add to the addiction. I still can't decide if I would ever want to be a cutter. It would be interesting, for sure

What I'm curious about is how exactly the cutters work.

I think it's a blade that vibrates on a set pitch; if the pitch is the same as the natural pitch of the crystal, then it can just sort of slide into the crystal. There never appears to be much difficulty cutting through, unless the cutter is off pitch.

Well, there is a good resistance at first, when the blade enters the crystal. But the singer gets used to the shock, making it no shock at all. I mean, if you do something enough you get used to it.
How did they word it... a sub-sonic cutter (I'm probably wrong)? You sing the note you want the crystal cut to, to tune it, and then as you cut it's tuning the crystal to that note. The sub-sonic (once again, I could be using the wrong term... I'll check) vibrations go into the crystal and tune it. I think the crystal MIGHT start out as a certain note, but it can be changed with the cutter/tuner (well, it is! :D )

Well, you'd have to be very good at singing. Or at least be able to match pitch and be in tune. I like the idea of it. The reality, however far-fetched, would be totally different. I don't like the idea of losing memory, inevitable as it be. I don't know what I think. I have to read the books again.

I have memories I would love to lose... so I'd go for it, definitely.

But what about when the singers started to go to the Big Hungry Junk and having their memories restored? Would you really want to revel in losing all the bad (and good) things just to have them coming flooding back to you later on? That would be, at least to me, a lot to cope with. Especially if you've been cutting for nigh unto 200 years and then all that lost memory comes back in one big WHAMMY!

I would NOT want to experience that!!! I think it would be enough to break at least half of the Singers' minds. It would mine!!!
I mean, what about losing partners... close friends... remembering the injuries you'd gotten, the claims you'd lost, all the times you'd crashed your sled and couldn't make enough to get off world. What about all the arguments, bad finds, crappy runs?
Would the good things be enough to counteract all the bad that came flooding back?
I don't think so.

All the same, what about the time spent with your partner(s)? All the enjoyment you got from that? And when you did go offworld, all the fun you had either solo or with a partner? All the adventures you had in the centuries of your life (although, remembering how old I am would be a downside), even the bad times? Hind sight is 20/20, or so I've been told. You could learn from all the mistakes you made and forgot. Of course, I wouldn't want to remember the miscarriage I've had, or the broken relationships, or all those things, but there would be good things to remember in there, too. They may be hidden and buried under all the bad times, but the good times would come thorugh along with it.
Personally, however, I wouldn't do the thing with the Junk. I would rather forget...

See... so despite all the offers of remembering your claims and good memories, you'd still want to forget the bad. And you can't JUST remember the good. :(
Remembering the claims might be enough for some... ... maybe not. But I think you and I are in the same frame of mind. We'd rather forget.

I think at the end of book 3, most of the singers had done the Junk thing, but some of them still refused. I would rather write down where my claims were and what color the crystal was and keep that somewhere.

True... just don't WRITE it down. Voice record it. Or is that what you meant? :D ;)

Only Killa was grabbed by the hungry junk, the other singers' claims were able to be refound through hypnosis therapy.
I think that I would risk remembering all the bad times to remember the good by going and meeting hungry junk, I think the worst thing about it all for me would be remembering how I treated other people when I was itching to get offworld and stuff, those singers could get downright nasty!

I wouldn't mind getting my memories back. Singers lead such interesting lives, I think it would be great to remeber all the things I'd done and places I'd been too. As for all the nasty things I might have done too, I would also remember why I'd acted that way - so I think I'd be able able to get beyond it. Besides I'm one of those would would do what Lars did and record everything and replay it a lot throughout my life - so hopefully I would have "remembered" who to be nice to.

Very true... I'd forgotten about that until, well, today when I read that part!! LoL

No. I meant write it. Killa actually wrote down the cordinates for her claim and stashed them in her skimmer until she met Big Hungry Junk and remembered anyway.
