Ok, calm. calm, deep breaths.

I'M GOING TO DO SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE!!!

Two weeks ago hubby asked me to back up all my text files (yes, all my writing) because he had to take the PC away to the shop.
So I did.
So I put it all on CDRW
So I numbered and filed it
So I put it away in the study.

Ok.
Brat senior is 15. He has his own PC, he has stacks of CDRW, he has a CD recorder.

"Oh yeah Mum, had to nick a CD to copy the new Eminem for Jason. It was only text files though?"

AAAAARGH!

Did I do something in a previous life?
Is this natural for a mother to want to seriously thrash son/son's room?

Should I look on it as an opportunity to start over with a new story?

Think I'll just go to bed now. :wine:

If you kill him... it's a justifiable homocide.

And you want us to STOP you from killing him?

Right, right, you probably invested a lot of time and money in him over fifteen years. Okay. But I'd say the Eminem is banned for a while. And a lecture on touching your stuff is definitely in order.

Don't suppose there's any hope that the PC in the shop hasn't been wiped completely? *hope*

Ask him if he wants to hear Eminem, sit him down in a place he can't escape easily, then take a pair of cans of M&Ms and shake them by his ears very closely and ask him how long he wants to hear Eminem after taking a copy of an Eminem thing and breaking it before his eyes... Or make it really an aol Disk upside down so he doesn't know.

Wait untill he's gone to school, then (carefully) remove ALL his CDs, stereos, posters, computer gear, fictional books etc... and take the lot to a friend of yours, a place he doesn't have access to.

Then when he gets home, tell him grounded for theft.

Unfortunately it was a virus problem, Windows core files corrupted. Re-format, re-install life etc.
So hubby says. I tend to switch off when all the tech stuff starts.

There is NO WAY I'd stop you from doing serious damage.... although I do suggest you do it to his CD collection, not his person.

LABLE EVERYTHING.... and make sure there's a stack of blanks where everyone knows where to find them. I have that issue with hubby...he makes cds, and I have NO CLUE what's on them. SO before we move, I have to run everything I even THINK have something on them, and LABLE them myself. :erm:

 :faint: As the others have said... you expect us to stop you? Writing gone for Eminem!!!!! It is natural to want to rage and rampage.

I admire your restraint though and that you came up with a bright side. Starting some new projects will definately help.

You might want to print out what is left and put it in a safety deposit box.

Why start over with a new project. I had something simular happen to me after just "completing" a novel. A virus attacked our computer, corrupting most everything I had written over the past two or three years, and my Dad had saved his resumes over my backups without checking what was on the disk at all. So, I mourned for severl hours. (One of the main characters was modeled after a friend of mine who had passed away only a month or so before, and the character was my only tangable way of remembering him.) Then, I started the work over again. After I got a good ways into it, we found a second back-up, and I compiled the two. In the end, it turned out five times better than the original that was lost!!

That would be perfect, and when he asks.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I had to nip some of your CDs to copy my music for a friend."

Even though all of the ideas of doing something to his stuff are good, and would give you deep, personal satisfaction, in the end it's pointless.

The best thing a mother can do to a kid, instead of the punishment thing, is the upset/guilt-trip thing. At least, if it's something that you don't normally do. (My mother-in-law has the guilt-trip thing down, so it no longer works. Now my mom, when she does it, it means something.)

He'll feel worse over disappointing Mom than he would over losing a CD he can buy (or rip) again - mainly because Moms are forever, CDs lose their appeal after a while.

Also - I'm not good with the CDRW thing, but see if you can get the CD back, and see if some of your files are still on it. Maybe they weren't over-written.

Last - in the future, do more than one backup, on more than one type of media if possible. It could've happened that the CD was bad, or got lost at some point. Someone could've accidentally dropped it while moving the coffee table, and <splinter> put the coffee table smack-dab on the CD. Same result as Brat #1, different circumstances.

Meanwhile, go back and re-write your work. *makes mental note to go home and back up files*
