View Full Version : The 'another thread about this' relating to television channels...

Was chatting (rather publicly) with Attraio and just started pondering what sort of access to television channels or stations we all have?
I'm personally spoiled for choice with 'SKY' TV. A package of umpteen million channels ranging from drivel, to drivel, to the occassional good comedy or documentary in amongst the drivel but at least a never ending supply of sport, music and chances to buy stuff...
What's about you?
Are you inundated with choice or are you limted to a small spectrum of televisual pleasure...
I'm presuming of course we're all in colour nowadays?

We have 3 three channels from the national broadcaster and one independant channel. They're basically non-pay - only a TV licence needed. Then there is DSTV, satelite television. 54 channels which you pay an arm and a leg for.

I have free cable, so 10 channels. It's a small cable company, run by the housing estate I live in, so they also have their own info channel, with occasional (very amateur) broadcasts. Usually it shows a static picture of the opening hours of the janitor's office.

I don't have cable, just the rabbit ears on top of the TV. They bring in six stations:
CBXFT - The French channel. Nothing to see here.
Access - The community education channel. Sometimes they have good movies, but most of the time they have programs that go along with a correspondence course offered from a local college.
CBC - The government-sponsored station. They have some good comedy (Air Farce, 22 Minutes, etc.), but otherwise, nothing interesting.
Global, A-Channel, CTV - I put these all together because they're all pretty much the same. Commercial stations showing mostly American programs. CTV is probably the most out there for showing The Osbournes and The Sopranos without censoring them. (None of those pesky "beep" noises, but LOTS of viewer discretion notices)
And yes, it is in colour.

I have DirecTV, basic package, with about 120 channels, of which I think I have about 50-some on my personal menu.

We have Sky TV (NZ) which has about 20-30 Chanels, including the 5 FTA Channels that are available here. This inclides about 7 Pay-Per-View Movie Channels plus, believe it or not, several Radio Style Music Channels.
There are also 5 Sports Channels on it, but we only take ESPN at the moment as part of our package.

We have basic cable which is about 70 stations. Basic means that we don't get any of the premiun movie or sports channels. Our neighbors have a fancier package from the cable company than we do, they have about 200 channels.
Does anyone else find it amazing that with so many channels, it's still possible to find nothing interesting to watch on tv?

I have freeview, since I refuse to put money in Rupert Murdoch's pocket, and anyway could never find anything I wanted to watch on SKY when I had it.

I don't find it that amazing. Completely expected, as far as I'm concerned. That's why I don't bother buying a cable subscription.

We have Comcast extended cable and one premium channel, HBO (I admit I watch the Sopranos....could I be from New Jersery and NOT watch it :D )
Don't really watch much TV, anyway...but hubby does, though mainly channels like Discovery, Animal Planet, History Channel.
It is amazing with the amount of money spent on programming, how incredibly terrible most of it is!!!!

I have DirectTV...guess we get over 100 channels. Yes, it is possible to go through the whole thing and find nothing I want to watch.
I like Discovery Channel, History Channel, HGTV, Food Channel, National Geographic Channel...then of course there's MTV and VH1 for fun.

I'm another one who has DirectTV. (Cable doesn't come out here. ) I just have the basic package and there's far more channels than I'll ever watch. I really wish we had the option to pick and choose the stations that we wanted to receive.

The cable package we have gives us 40 channels, of which we watch about 30, maybe. I don't watch the religion, shopping, sports or music channels. I'll watch the news and weather channels only if something big is happening. We don't get any movie channels (nothing on them I'm interested in anyway) or any specialty channels. We do get History, Space, HGTV, A&E and 5 local stations. As long as I get Survivor, The Amazing Race, 24, and assorted CSI shows, I'm happy. :D
