View Full Version : Which Pernese era do you like best?

Anneli

If your choice is Ninth Pass, is that pre- or post AIVAS?

Do you prefer Sixth Pass Pern or Second Pass Pern?

Or was the Landing and early years the best of Pern for you?

I personally am an early Ninth Pass Pern fan - ie I prefer Ninth Pass Pern before the advent of AIVAS, but I also love the Sixth Pass books. I guess that puts me in the category of Pern-technophobes ;)

How do you like your Pern? :bouncy:

Sixth Pass and early Ninth Pass like Anneli, and much for the same reasons.

Sixth, Second, maybe early 9th (up until the discovery of AIVAS.) I like the adaptive period in DE/RSR, I like Classic Pern in the Sixth, and I like how they were headed before the Deus Ex Machina dropped in.

So sue me...I'm partial to the Dd/CoP era

I've love to see more about the early weyrs...the Lady told us how they started Benden, Telgar, Ista and High Reaches...but only described Benden...I'd like to hear more about Telgar, Ista, HR and the founding of Igen. Maybe some more stories about trips back to Southern...they're mentioned, but no details.

Don't get me wrong...I love ALL of them. Only one I don't own and haven't read is Dragons Kin...which I'm getting next weekend for xmas :)

...I really, really want to know more about the early days of the first settlers and how they survived Thread. It would be so interesting to see more of the evolution to the Pernese we meet centuries later.

But then, I'm a bit of a history buff anyway.... :D

I would LIKE more of the early days... First and Second Pass... out of the rest... Nineth. The only thing I am totally crazy about post-Avis is the dolphins reconneting.

Which reminds me, I would really like to know exactly what cased the breach there!

Actually, I like all of the eras but I kinda give the nod to the 9th pass, especially during the discovery of AIVAS and the "moving" of the Red Star, so I suppose than makes me pro-post AIVAS

The first and second passes were my fav books :) but then I also am a history buff AND (hides) I ended up reading the books backwards lol. I really enjoyed learning how the seperate holds and weyrs were founded and especially liked Dragonseye. :) It's the most read book of my collection.

First Pass and Ninth Pass pre-AIVAS.

I enjoyed hearing about the Landing and hows the dragons came to being, and in the early Ninth Pass i enjoyed seeing how the Pernese were using their own ingenuity to develop, rather than that of a bygone age.

I think Aivas got a bum rap. It's up to the people to decide what is done with the information. Just because it was technical doesn't make it bad. I myself prefer a flush toilet to an outhouse.........

So do I, Andrea, in my day to day life. However, I read stories to escape for a moment to another reality, and I don't need the characters to enjoy the same creature comforts as I'm used to in order to enjoy the story. That said, one reason why I don't like post-AIVAS Pern is that the earlier books were so much better written, the characters were more gray and less black and white, and there were less deus ex-machina solutions.

Well, those of you who like the early turns on Pern should start looking forward to buying Dragonsblood :D

It's due out in the US on 25 January, a couple of months later in the UK :(

It covers two time-eras. The first is the start of the Third Pass and combines characters from Dragon's Kin with new characters we haven't seen before, while the second is in a later period of the First Pass and includes some of the characters we got to know in Dragonsdawn. For instance, it touches on the deaths of Emily Boll and Sorka, among others, and gives a few more glimpses into Pern in the First Pass. It also gives a whole new aspect to Wind Blossom...

I won't say anymore to avoid spoilers :(

What she said. Plus for me it's not so much the technology (for heaven's sake, Fandarel invented the TELEGRAPH in DQ with no help at all!) but that it's all neatly dropped into their laps, not only solving their problems all tied up in a neat bow (DQ was definitely pointing away from going to the Red Star being the solution, AIVAS reversed that) but creating two camps--the AIVAS is Right, All Hail AIVAS, Crowd, and the Knuckle-Dragging Cave-Dwelling Abominators, which is not only trite plotting but thoroughly unrealistic--let's face it, there are ups and downs to technology, and just browsing through the computer and doing what it tells you and it's all good is pretty dumb. Technology on Pern isn't necessarily bad, but the way it was done was.

I'd like to be with Red and family during the founding of Ruatha. The danger of thread is known and the dragon riders are coming along nicely. The plague has come and gone and people are getting settled again. It's a time of expansion and would be quite exciting.

I read the first half and didn't like how the DD characters were doen--there was no personality left in any of them!! And M'hall's still a creep.... :ugg: I personally liked the third pass part with Lorana and such.

Back to topic: I like the second pass because you get to see who was named for whom (Paulin=Paul Benden Tashvi=Tarvi Andiyar S'nan=Sean Connell? Zulaya=Alianne Zulueta, etc.) and the founding of Crom.

Ninth Pass, pre-aivas (where my Weyr is set!) ... because I like the "simplistic" living. Sure, Thread was a nuisance... but it gave the people goals. The menace gave them a reason to live, to wake up, to Impress!

*shrugs* AIVAS is overrated. *pokes it with a stick*

I prefer the early times up until the second and third passes. I, too, would like to know what happens in an Interval as it would be more of a challenge then a Pass. After all, fighting Thread is a fight for survival and I can only read so much about it before wanting to change the channel, so to speak. An Interval allows one so many more challenges, especially those changes in culture and the interactions between crafts, holders, and riders.

I like all the Pern books, though I must admit I like some better than others. I guess, being most familiar with Lessa and F'lar et al, I am most familiar with 9th but lukewarm towards AIVAS. When I first read that, I wondered if it had anything to do with the fact that Anne seemed to like being called a Science Fiction writer rather than a Fantasy writer. Putting AIVAS in there, then producing DD & DE/RSR put Pern squarely back into the Sci Fi genre.

Second Pass Pern. *nods* It's pretty much what a normal Pern would be like. The Southern Continent was still open (mostly). However, I would take Second Pass and mix it with Sixth Pass, thus eliminating the Plague that took place. Me no likey. I still don't like how that one ended, so sad.

Second Pass Pern in a Sixth Pass Timeline.

Nine was a no-no, because of the whole betweening it. Besides, can't write about Nine (not alternate) much anyways. :p

I am an abominator. I think that getting rid of the Red Star and Thread will actually cause the extinction of the dragons. Other than that bloody computer, I love Ninth Pass. I know there are plenty of you who don't like F'lar or Lessa, but I do. I love them and F'nor and the whole lot of them. Jaxom I can take or leave. I want to know more about the first pass and how the original dragonriders faired. We get on glimpse into it from the Chronicles, but I need more. Torene is mentioned in Dragonflight, so what did she do to be such an outstanding and memorable Weyrwoman, other than founding Benden? Of course, I want to know more about the second pass. How can she introduce the second pass and then leave us all waiting?! AH! So I guess I like all the era's but Ninth pass Pre-AIVAS. Blasted damn computer to save the world. Blimey, it was a bit too easy. Maybe we could have a tenth pass where *GASP* Thread still falls.?

Let me clarify my above stated opinion. So I said I was an abominator, but only jokingly. I understand the people of Pern don't want Thread, but I never agreed to burn AIVAS (thanks monkeys ;) . I'm just saying that the plot to get rid of Thread and then have Dragonriders be "sky watchers" seems pretty weak. I support all the Healer advances and all the other advances, actually. My BIG objection to AIVAS is the fact that the PURPOSE for the dragons and their riders is suddenly gone. Were Pern a real planet I think they would die out as a species. I'm speaking heresy and hypocracy aren't I? That and too "hide-bound."

Though I have to admit, it is a bit far-fetched, but then, anything could happen on Pern.

Agree. The only thing I really hate about Aivas is what he did to the dragonriders, both short-term and the long run. Thread is as much a part of Pern as the dragons are. Without either, its whole purpose as a fictional place is destroyed.

I'm definitely a Landing person. Lessa, Menolly and Lorana all irritate me badly. Nerilka is.. don't get me started. I like Sean and Sorka, because there are very obvious flaws in their personalities that make them human. I don't much care for Sallah Telgar, but I like her name. I like what Avril Bitra did for the story, but I didn't like her character for reasons unknown. Maybe because I can't pronounce her last name. The T always becomes a TCH in my mouth, and I've gotten many an odd look from my mother when I mention her. XD
I also like the scientific side of this.. I wish there was more information about how the dragons were bio-engineered. I like that Todd threw a lot of that in Dragon's Blood.. I even used part of it in my Biology class! Kind of.. sort of.. not really, but close. I understood my Biology class because of it, when it comes to the DNA portion (which I slept through ^^").

Those are two characters I really enjoy reading (as well as Ruth, Moreta, Menolly, Torene, and Pol and Bay) and also one reason (or two) why I like Dragonsdawn so much.
