What's RP all about?

So...what is roleplay? And what's it all about?

Uh....okay, sticking strictly to Pern--the way most RP works is someone (the BoD, the Owner, whatever the group calls them) creates a scenario. Using myself as an example: I and another person from the KT (who's no longer a member) came up with the scenario of North Ranges Weyr--an auxiliary of HRW, set in an alternate 5th Pass in which AIVAS was never found, no long intervals. Then we came up with some plots, recruited a Weyrwoman, etc. People wrote characters based on the scenario, and we came up with an opening plot. People post what their characters say and do as stories. We play round-robin and full post--RR means that someone sends the start of a story to the e-mail lists (now this can be done in a forum, too) and people reply. Full post means you either write it all yourself or you and another person write together off-list or forum and post it together. There are about as many Weyrs as there are writers out there, so you can pretty much find a scenario to suit your needs.

Now, if you mean "what is roleplay" in a grander sense, I'd do a google search because it could take a long, long time to explain...

This is how I've explained RP to complete newbies over the years...

Remember when you were a kid and you played cowboys and indians....or cops and robbers...or superheros and villians? Well guess what...you were RP'ing. RP is just a more structured form of 'pretend'...you create a character, give him/her some special abilities, give him/her a personality and start having the best time of your life.

This from an RP'er who's been at it for 31 years. :D

Find a club you like (check the signatures of some of the people on this board), read its website to find out their scenario*, and create a character. The members and BoD willl help you from there.

Yep! (Like, note my sig--it's a link to my Alt 5th Pass PBeM, North Ranges Weyr.)

And BoDs really love when your persona sheet shows that you read and paid attention not just to our rules but to things like histories. So many times you'll get sheets where the people obviously went straight to the "join us" page and wrote out a sheet without bothering to check anything about the Weyr! (Example: if we get a sheet where someone was born at Southern Weyr and is a dolphincrafter--we don't have dolphincrafters and no one lives in the South, and it's pretty clear if you read our site.) BoDs love when you show you've put some effort into it.

What's with all the hatchings and bondings?

Well, I've only just now discovered how fun the C&RP forum is. But no bondings so far...

Hatchings and bondings go on like this.
There are two types of bondings:
[creature name] bonding --RP
or
[Creature name] Bonding

The second will usually be where you pick a number and bond that creature.
The Rp you will Rp your character and bond one of those creatures!
