I have a story I'd like to set on a beach in the Carolinas. Does anyone live anywhere near there, or does anyone regularly go to the Carolina beaches?

A lot would depend upon the exact location you choose. For example if you choose North Carolina you have the option of placing all or some of the location on the Outer Banks, a long chain of barrier islands that are very touristy (think sand dunes and houses on stilts). Cape Hatteras and Kitty Hawk are two of best known outer bank locations. However, the outer banks are filled mostly with vacation homes and there isn't much nightlife save a few bars and restaruants that catter to a mostly middle aged crowd.

For college age kids on break you probably want something like Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. This is a large resort area with plenty of things to attract and entertain that crowd. While the ocean front beaches are mostly populated with resort hotels, a ranch style house would not be out of place in the communities on the mainland to the west of the ocean front.

You might try Googling on these places for pictures and details.

One other point, the type of bathing float you describe would not be found on an ocean front beach because the surf is much too active. If you want one, locate it on an inland river or lake where your characters can relax in the sun and reflect on life instead of hanging on for dear life! :)
