Pondering the development of a sentient planet, I considered whether the planet was born sentient or whether it was inhabeted by a concious at a later point. I wondered if there was a possiblility of some such organism as the 'Jewel Junk' in the Crystal Singer series (Crystal Line) becoming so impregnated within the planet itself that it could become almost indistinguishable?
Could Petaybee have simply been a home for some well developed being from elsewhere?

Interesting question Jayson. I'm trying to remember if Petaybee became sentient during the terraforming process, or if it was before. It's been a while since I read the books (almost time for a re-read!).
I didn't get the impression that jewel junk was able to communicate quite as well as the planet. Petaybee had a unique way of communicating and seemed to care about the people that lived there. The junk seemed to be a bit more...well, greedy. :erm:

Hmmm I just re-read Powers That Be, but skipped over the part where Petaybee gives them a history lesson (once I've read a book more than four or five times, I just read the interesting bits). I'm pretty sure it was described as having been awoken by the terraforming process. Like it was dormant potential. Let me go check... (now I have the need to know!).
Ah ha.
It was described as having had a beating heart trapped in an icy shell before the terraforming. Then the terraforming happened, and life grew on the surface, the planet had an orgasmic type experience of life and started communicating through this new life it found growing from its surface.

PTB Was alive before Terraforming, Terraforming woke it up/gave birth to it. Just finished all three books in two days.

Yup, what they said.
I think it's interesting to note that they made a point of saying that the world is only about 200years old and for a planet is more or less still a baby. Each interaction with it increases it's knowledge and abilities. By the end of Power Play, Petaybee was starting to do some pretty interesting things like drawing precise maps on the walls of the communion caves, and speaking with an enlarged vocabulary in a purposeful way not just echoes of another speaker. Can't wait to read "Changelings" to see just how much Petaybee has changed in it's ability to interact with the life on it's surface.... Should be a good read.

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if there could be a connection in a latter book? say.....maybe crystal singers came before Petaybee was frozen? The possiblities could be so fun!!
