Here's a thread for anyone who'd like to discuss UK Gather 2005. Make suggestions, ask questions, offer to organise it (please)...

Hmm, when would the gather be held?

I'd intended to go this year, but having it during term time (i.e. from the start of October) pretty much excludes me :(

Leeds would be quite nice, though, and easy to get to.

Ah, I stopped paying attention to the OKT... Glasgow sounds good, and August sounds better :) Don't think I'll shell out £110 for the conference though ;)

Hmm, my going could be vetoed if I get a job in Cheltenham I've applied for, but other than that it sounds good since it's out of Term :D

I don't think people necessarily have to become Members of GenCom if it's too expensive, the idea was to ensure that Anne would be available to attend our Gather if we held it in the margins of the bigger event she is committed to being a guest at. :bouncy:

Yeah, commitments willing I'm happy to go to the gather, but not to the conference. As long as there will be a gather, rather than us just staying in the same hotel and all going to the con :)

Just out of curiousity what is GenCon and do I have to pay £110 to attend the gather???

I would like to go... but it will involve saving up... :faint:

As far as I can tell, Anne is not currently in any way linked to this Con. In fact, as Ian pointed out a while back, the guest list is not that impressive, and the price is definitely high.
However, Glasgow is a good place for a Gather, and there will be loads of fans around at that time, making the atmosphere positive for us, even if we don't actually attend.
Of course, there are problems with having a Gather during any school holidays, specifically that accomodation will be peak rate, rather than off-peak. This is the reason why past Gathers have all been in October/November.

And the cost of membership to the con... What is the world coming to?

what about dong it over a weekend in term time? that would drop the costs whilst allowing people to attend who do stuff in term time. i am sure they(I) would be willing to miss ONE day.

That's what happened last term :)

Unfortunately I can't really afford the time during term - our terms are shorter than most, and have a *lot* of work crammed in...

I don't think anyone was proposing that the Gather be midweek...

JayEgo

I don't think anyone was proposing that the Gather be midweek...No! It needs to start Friday afternoon / evening for those who can make it then and get into full organised chaotic swing by the Saturday afternoon.
Blackpool was a fine example IMO and I know folk felt York to be a success too! I can't comment too much on York, I was in the doghouse for being in the city and not at the gather, along with various others

Still, if we wanna do Glasgow at around the time of Worldcon, then we oughta get hunting for locations now, so we can still form an alternative if needs be!

Anyone for forming a comittee to organise the gather...? Someone with time on their hands and the ability to think logically? Rules a lot of folk out I know!

Now that Anne is confirmed as going to the World Con can we get a bit more info on Anneli's suggestion about the Gather perhaps being an event during that weekend in Glasgow. (I think she mentioned a room being put aside?)

I have already booked the fortnight off work in anticipation  but need to get ideas about hotels etc. We don't necessarily have to all stay together do we?

Steven B
11th February 2005, 05:38 PM
Do we have any members who live in the Glasgow area and can supply some local knowledge? If not, this event may need to be organised by remote control. I suggest we choose a suitable hotel and meet up there. Most hotels have a bar.

From my own knowledge of the area (I visited the SECC for a conference last year) I'd recommend finding somewhere along the low level railway link from Glasgow Central Station to Partick, which passes through the SECC. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Some useful links:

If the Gather will take place in Glasgow and in august isn't it time someone in the neighbourhood could possibly organize something please.
I'm a bit handicaped here in Sweden and has to know when I shall ask for vaccation from work for this.
So please start ! And I think we should try to get at least the same hotel! Otherwise this would not be a Gather WorldCon seem to expensive for me :bouncy:

I think Glasgow would be quite ok for me!!!!! :ok: I've just discovered that I can fly frpm Stockholm Skavsta to Glasgow direct Wow ! So now it is the question of time then.................... Please someone take charge ! As Ive mentioned before;it is a bit hard for me living in Sweden to take care of such things.
Please !!! If we will be having our Gather earlier we have to start up now to be able to get a place of our own !!! :bouncy:
