View Full Version : Where do you write?

I don't mean 'where' as in where do you commit the story to paper or disk (there was a thread about that already), but where do you compose your ideas and create your stories?

For me this happens most often while driving my car home from work. I have a rather lengthy commute and it gives me a good solid 45-60 minutes each day where it's just me, the road and 10,000-20,000 other people driving half the speed limit bumper to bumper.

Alone in my car I can act out dialog without getting funny looks from other people. I can jump from one idea to another without feeling guilty for not finishing to type in a paragraph. I have a small but eclectic pile of CD's in there so I can fit the background music to the mood of whatever I'm working on. Then when I get home I rush to the computer to quickly block an outline and spend the next several hours/days/weeks fleshing it out.

There's something about driving that fuels my creative juices. All the best stories I have ever written came to me while driving long distances. If I ever get a job close to where I live, I might never write again!

Usually in the shower or in bed. Places where I can't easily write.

I think it has something to do with not feeling pressured to get it on paper. If I sit down and tell myself, "All right, now I'm going to write," I go blank. But if I'm not focussed on how it'll look written down, I can let myself explore different ways the story can go before committing to something.

Pretty much all the time. I'm always thinking about some story or other.

It can happen anywhere for me.

But most of the time it's when I'm either in bed or out walking. :)

Whenever I have inspiration.

Especially at night and when I'm walking home from school.

Anywhere, any time. Even at the gym, which gets my mind off working out. But in bed is good too, I got 2 books and a flash fic out of 3 different dreams. I wonder if it's cheating to write from dreams though, there's much less concious effort involved in the thinking process!

Never discount your dreams as being just 'unconscious' thoughts. In truth our minds do some of their hardest work when we dream. That is when we take everything we see, hear, smell, taste, touch and learn throughout the day and store it into long-term memory. To do that, our so-called 'unconscious' must evaluate each short-term memory and relate it to everything we have ever learned that was similar. In order for us to not be driven completely crazy by this process our 'conscious' minds turn off, but as we begin to wake up from deep sleep we catch a glimpse of this process and use our natural pattern matching ability to build a story around the jumble of memories. If this isn't the soul of the creative process, I don't know what would be!

 Most often when I'm just settling down to go to sleep, although it can pretty much be anywhere else too!

When I'm driving. It takes my mind off of the task at hand, which means I should probably stop thinking and driving at the same time. No, seriously.

I have a tape recorder in the car so I can record ideas and then outline later, and fleshing comes MUCH later.

Or at work (ick) because I don't really do anything there. Meh, oh well.

I also like to just surprise people and post totally inane stuff and see what they think of it. I'm a member of another forum Satch Land (SL) (http://www.satchland.com) where I can post all inanities and have them critiqued. Feel free to visit and have a look-see.

Where do I write? On the floor. But the story lines hit me when I'm doing something difficult that needs all my attention. THen I act them out in my head all day long for weeks at a time.. then I usually "write" them.

Pretty much everywhere, they're my daydreams. Mostly before I fall asleep at night, before I get up in the morning, geometry, chemistry, spanish, english, and any other class that starts to bore me.

Usually in school when I have nothing to do. *nods*

Otherwise, I just think where ever. Heck, I made a storyline of 10-20 years of a wolf pack based off of the Julie's Wolf Pack series. I just wrote down their names. I still have som eof those lists, actually.

I really don't write down my stories. They come into my mind as segments. I can't fabricate them all together. Filling in holes is not my forte. XD
