View Full Version : More Dinos?

Dinosaur Planet was the first book I'd ever seen by Anne McCaffrey, but the school wouldn't let me rent it because they thought I was too young. Later, after I'd read the Pern books, I found out that Anne wrote DP too, and scrambled to read it. But it was ALOT different than my expectations. The rear cover said something about 'predatory carnivores sytematically hunting down their colleagues.' This happened nowhere in the book, and the dinosaurs took a backseat to the plot of Heavyworlders. I still like the book, but I wish the story were more like the title suggests. Was anyone else a bit disapointed with the lack of dinosaurs?

Ok Bronzie, I'm assuming that you read both Dinosaur Planet I and II? Recently? There is a bit more information in the Planet Pirate series, since they tie in.
The phrase that you mention though "Predatory Carnivores systematically hunting down their colleagues" to me it's referring to the Heavyworlders and their penchant for cannabilism once they get away from 'civilised' space.... :erm:

Yes, I've read all the Planet Pirate and Dinosaur Planet books except Generation Warriors. I know how they lock together, but what I meant was initial impressions of the book. I read DP before the others so it left me wanting more Dinos... and because of the Title I assumed that the predatory carnivores referred to the dinosaurs. But the Heavyworlders didn't hunt down the rest of the team systematically, they went after other animal flesh, and turned on the team right at the end.

Hmmm, well they were written sometime in the 80s? Not sure when, but perhaps the genre back then was still trying to get readers, and the person who wrote the blurb was trying to make it more of a draw for possible purchasers? Don't know!

The blurb on the back of the book usually overexaggerates quite a bit.

I've often thought blurbs and cover art were generally produced by people who had never read the book and may or may not even know its title.

I read that book in fear of what she might do to the poor dinos. I love dinosaurs, so seeing them portrayed in books is always something I tread lightly around. The cover to the copy I have is just horrible, but the book was so cheep, and had both books in it! In any case . . . yeah, I totally lost my train of thought.

That would make more sense, as the dinosaurs on the planet could not actually be considered to be anyone's "colleagues". :erm: I hope.

I have to agree the real dinosaurs weren't really the key to the story, whilst the heavyworlders did not turn canibal. They just reverted to being omivorous which is what humans usually are anyway.

There's the bit involving those Giffs, dealt with more in the second book than the first.
