Moving along:
While we're waiting for me to get off my proverbial arse and finish the other drawing I'm working on, here's the black-and-white of "Rescue (http://www.dragonchoice.com/dc/dc10.htm)," which was one of several illustrations I did for GirlSlick's fantastic (we English majors like to call that "understatement") fanfic, Dragonchoice (http://www.dragonchoice.com). Frankly, I like the black and white infinitely better-- it LOOKS like I did it in pencil, but I actually did it in MetaCreations' Painter Classic (though I've mostly moved away from that and am working almost completely in Photoshop these days). Computers are NEAT. And, no, I don't use a mouse; I use a Wacom Intuous tablet, which is an absolute necessity for anyone doing any sort of extensive computer artistry.
Right. Less talk, more drawing.
Darshanth (http://www.webbestre.net/art/dragons/darshanthbw.jpg) (large-ish; may take a moment on slower connections -- it's also likely to need magnification).

So actually, it occurs to me that, since nudity is a-okay, I have a few more links I can post. I took a life drawing course at the Torpedo Factory (http://www.torpedofactory.org/) in Old Town, Alexandria when I was about 16 (the classes are run by The Art League (http://www.theartleague.org/)), and previous and subsequent classes (long-pose related and non-) both at school and out mean that I've gotten pretty interested in rendering human beings.
The following links go to drawings containing at LEAST partial nudity.
For the moment, all of my pictures and art pieces are in web directories, and not actually organized on any sort of web PAGE. I keep meaning to fix that, but lack of time and lack aren't real conducive to that sort of thing. So I'll just post these links individually:
Nude Sketch/Gesture Study (http://www.brownridercat.com/art/lifedrawings/new%20work/nudesketch1.jpg): This was from a photograph on a website I really shouldn't link to because the content isn't exactly appropriate for THIS website. But, regardless, I really like this drawing. I did it in Photoshop, I think.
The next four are all SuicideGirls (also another link I won't provide, but you can Google it if you're really interested):
Malloreigh (http://www.brownridercat.com/art/lifedrawings/new%20work/malloreigh.jpg) -- Conte crayon and charcoal on newsprint.
Q (http://www.brownridercat.com/art/lifedrawings/new%20work/Q.jpg) -- Conte crayon and charcoal on newsprint (this and the above drawing were both really fun to do, since I could just go nuts with the charcoal).
Kitty (http://www.brownridercat.com/art/lifedrawings/new%20work/kitty29.jpg) -- Pencil on printer paper, cleaned up in Photoshop.
Santianna (http://www.brownridercat.com/art/lifedrawings/new%20work/santianna.jpg) -- Pencil on printer paper, cleaned up in Photoshop.
If anyone happens to be interested in my OLD work -- and I do mean OLD; like, five years ago, age 16 old -- most of that stuff is in this directory (http://www.brownridercat.com/art/lifedrawings/old%20work/). Most of it's from the Torpedo Factory, but some of it is from the Visual and Performing Arts program at Stuart Hall (Anne McCaffrey's one-time high school, actually).
Enough chatter for now.

I was lying down with my drawing pad propped on my knees and a mirror in my left hand, holding the drawing pad with my right arm while I tried to sketch AND look in the mirror. ;> I don't THINK I have any other self-portraits as such, but I've got a bunch of character drawings that look a helluva lot like me.
The closet thing I've got to a recent self-portrait is me as a cartoon (http://www.webbestre.net/art/other/charcartoon_bw.jpg) (which is coupled with my best friend as a cartoon (http://www.webbestre.net/art/other/sarahcartoon_bw.jpg)).

I'm responsible for the illustrations in chapters four, six, and ten, yeah. (The artists and their respective chapter illustrations are listed here (http://www.dragonchoice.com/artists.htm).) Chapter six is SORT of a self-portrait; I took a picture of myself to get the pose right, and I figured that since Sarenya is described more or less like me, it was really just a matter of strengthening her nose, emphasizing her cheekbones, darkening her skin, etc. Valonna, yes, was modeled on Sarah Michelle Gellar, not out of a lack of my own creativity but in response to direct input from the author. ;>

I'm pretty sure this next one is no good at all (I think it's far, FAR too busy), but maybe you all can find some merit in it.
I was (and still am) going to do a really dynamic, violent depiction of the Wirenth-Prideth battle, just to spice things up a little. As I re-read the scene to make sure I placed everyone right, I came to this at the end:
"Canth was on the ledge, his eyes glowing dully. He was swaying with exhaustion. F'nor encircled the bowed head with his arms, their mutual grief so intense they seemed afire with pain.
It was too late. Prideth had risen. Too close to Wirenth. Not even the queens could help. I tried, F'nor, I tried. She--she fell so fast. And she turned on me. Then went between. I could not find her between.
They stood together, immobile." --Dragonquest, DelRey paperback, p. 226.
I thought it was a really poignant image, so I got a little distracted.
I realized later, as I rechecked the quote, that I put Canth and F'nor on the ground when they're supposed to be on their weyrledge. I could have fixed it, but... enh.
One more reason it's not all that great. (http://www.webbestre.net/art/dragons/canth_fnor.jpg)
But there it is anyway.

To offset the profound suckiness of the one I just posted, here's something a little more entertaining. I saw a picture of a dog sprawled out on a couch and thought the expression on its face was so funny it needed to be drawn.
Only I turned the dog into a dragon.
I thought it was funny, anyway. (http://www.webbestre.net/art/dragons/limp.jpg)
Wow. 6/26/04. Can't believe I did this one almost a year ago.

The F'nor and Canth pic doesn't suck at all. In fact, the translucency of those wings is very well done. Other than the caption at the bottom, it might actually fit elsewhere if you think it doesn't fit in that scene.
The green dragon is cute! It does have that doggish look that makes you want to rub its belly :D. My cat does that.

The F'nor and Canth picture is a truly wonderful one. It works better as a silouette than it would have otherwise, and the little bit of transparent wing showing is an excellant effect. It embodies the emotion written in that scene, and you picked up on the phrase "they seemed afire with pain" perfectly with the blazing orange cloudy background. You can just feel the pain in that picture, and the idea that they are both suppoting each other and holding one another together. Bravo :applause:

So do I, but higher ones still have ledges don't they? If the POV was from within the mouth of the weyr as Ian said, your picture could easily be in any one of them. The only problem is not seeing the opposide side of the Weyr, but in the mood and style of this picture, that detail isn't necessary.

The only problem is not seeing the opposide side of the Weyr, but in the mood and style of this picture, that detail isn't necessary. I'm not sure the ledge would be wide enough to have the same curvature I gave the ground. And, yeah, the other side of the Weyr would be a pretty necessary addition; the only way I could get the same silhouette effect without the background also being totally dark (as the Weyr would obscure the sun long before it actually set) would be if F'nor and Canth had a weyr near the top of the caldera, and even then I'm not sure the effect would be the same. Come to think of it, the way this picture is they're probably standing in the middle of an open field somewhere, and not in the Weyr at all.
Ugh. Can't believe I didn't think of that.
Well. Artistic license. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;>

Actually, about ground weyrs, this from Dragonquest (page 22/23 in the Corgi paperback)
"With a parting scratch, F'nor told Canth that he'd get some food, and started down the stone ramp from his ledge. One of the privileges of being Wing-second was choice of quarters. Since Ramoth as senior queen would permit only two junior queens in Benden Weyr, there were two unoccupied Weyrwoman quarters. F'nor had appropriated one."
Of course you'd still see the other side of the Weyr... ;)

Yesterday, I did this thing (http://webbestre.net/art/dragons/iramyth_bw.jpg) of my current MUSH character's dragonet, Iramyth. It's not colored yet, but I think I'll do it with Prismacolors instead of digitally like I usually do. (I've only used them once before, years ago, but I think the results were pretty good (http://webbestre.net/art/dragons/nhiamethcol.jpg). (The original of that last one can be found here (http://webbestre.net/art/dragons/nhiamethbw.jpg), if anyone really cares.)) It's actually a little bit more after Bronzie's style, I think-- the musculature around the wings in particular-- but one tends to osmose things from artwork worth osmosing. Her headknobs are also more vertical and antennae-like than I typically draw them, on some reliable advice I got, and I lengthened her torso as per all our bickering in the Dragon Sizes thread (you can't tell so much because she's sitting, but her hind legs are much farther back than I typically put them; in fact, I think I moved them TOO far). Her on-game description is thus: Sizable as greens go, exceeding the length of the smaller blue hatchlings, this dragonet is fashioned mainly of angular, jagged edges that fit together almost "incorrectly," the look of too little hide stretched across too much body - not quite gangly, but certainly thinner than most of her clutchmates. A steely, seafoamy greenish-gray, her color is muted and uncertain, shifting as the light hits here here or there: The draconic equivalent of hazel. A smattering of speckles, bluer and a shade darker than the rest of her, runs the length of her neck, invisible from more than a few feet away.
(--it's not great at the moment.) So I'll update again when she's colored.

Excellent, I love that gangly look that you don't often see in Pern artwork. I especially love her neck and fingers. Something about that left hand just looks awesome  Something about the bottom part of the chest looks a bit off though... it looks a bit like it's sagging between the arms. Maybe if the lines before and after the arm were adjusted it would make it look a bit tighter.

Some of y'all probably already saw this in the "Dragons and shiny stuff" thread in DRoP, but yesterday I sketched up what I thought dragon bling (http://www.webbestre.net/art/dragons/dragon_jewels.jpg) might look like, were such a thing feasible on Pern. That there's supposed to be a weyrling.
I realized that I drew the top of her head quite a bit higher than it ought to be -- I'll revise it to be the curvature of her neck, and delineate the round part of her skull more clearly between the headknobs -- and I know some of the perspective and proportions are off. But I thought she was one of better equine-like dragons; I used this image of a white mule foal (http://www.usipp.com/gatefarm/images/NurseryImages/White_Mule_Foal.jpg) as my primary reference.
One day, I might have the scratch to replace my Wacom tablet pen (how I miss you!) and color her properly.

My artworks, let me show you them.
These are all scanned in from my crappy little spiral sketchbook, and haven't been cleaned up in Photoshop or anything -- so you can see all my cool cool eraser marks and smudges and what not.
I should note that all the animal studies came directly from the GREATEST MOST AWESOME CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER, which is a giant-ass hardcover spiral notebook my boyfriend put together with dozens and dozens -- possibly hundreds -- of color photos of animals. Categorized. Complete with Works Cited list. Yeah.
This is all in mechanical pencil, so pardon the, you know, lack of finesse.
Horse skull study. (http://webbestre.net/art/other/horse_skull_study.jpg) Fun! It's like class at the Torpedo Factory all over again.
Horse studies. (http://webbestre.net/art/other/horse_studies.jpg) And I would note that I really don't give much of a crap about horses, but they're useful as Pernese dragon artwork goes. I wasn't one of those pre-teen girls who was obsessed with drawing horses, so I figured I needed the practice!
Bats! (http://webbestre.net/art/other/bat_studies.jpg) I want one!
Eye studies. (http://webbestre.net/art/other/eye_studies.jpg) Two thumbs up and a cookie if you can guess which eye goes with which animal.
Sketch dragon. And a half. (http://webbestre.net/art/dragons/sketch_dragons.jpg)
Wyrbaby and mermaid -- NUDITY WARNING. (http://webbestre.net/art/other/wyrbaby_and_mermaid.jpg) Tasteful nudity, of course. The "wyrbaby" is this weird-ass idea I had floating around in my head while reading Perdido Street Station. Wyrmen are these ugly, wacky, crass little half-man-half-bat dudes who fly around New Crobuzon crapping on people's heads and running errands for the right price. I thought, you know, maybe wyrbabies might be cute. So I drew a cute one -- drooling and pissing. Aww. It's practicing for adulthood!
That's all for now, I think.

Let me start by saying, that hippie boy you have hanging around rocks.
I love the horse that you drew face-on.
Wyrbaby looks crazy! I need to read PSS.

Straight out of the sketchbook: RAWR!! (http://webbestre.net/art/dragons/sketch_dragons_roar.jpg)

I realize there are two totally different facial configurations for these guys. I'm still deciding what one of "my" Pern dragons look like -- especially now that I have my wonderful book of animal photos to work from! You can probably tell the dragon at the top of the linked photo was based more on a dog; the one at the bottom, the one posted here, got its chops from a gorilla (with the canines moved waaay back).
Hard to fit all that dentistry in a horse-shaped maw, that's for damn sure.

holy crap :eek2: I like how you find interesting aspects of Pern dragons to draw which we don't see very often. I can't recall a single picture of an angry dragon before, well done!
I had a sketch of a dragon skull once, mainly a horse skull with cat-like molars and sharp forward teeth. But they were more like theropod teeth, no canines like yours.
*edit* Ah, here we go http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/Images/Bronze/DragonSkull.jpg

Thanks! I'm working on coloring him; I did about 80% of it last night, and will try to finish it up this evening.
I like your skull, and it makes sense to me -- I go with the pointy canines because every carnivore that I can think of has them, and since dragons are strictly carnivores, I can only assume they'd have some big friggin' teeth. All that ripping through sinew and pulverizing bone and what not. Lots of tearing. Killing cows is messy business. But I give them molars, too, for the crushing, and because Anne makes such a point about dragonets learning to chew.
Plus, fangs are more interesting artistically. ;>

It seems like most carnivores are mammals and all of those do have canines. Any that aren't mammals are reptiles, such as a crocodile or komodo dragon, and none of those have them (unless you count snake fangs). Hunting theropod dinosaurs seemed to do a pretty fine job of ripping, tearing, and crushing bone, especially good ol' Rexie, and he didn't have any canines.
Dragons are neither mammals nor reptiles, but a class of their own. So whether or not they have the canine-like fangs is up to personal preference, I suppose.

Yeah. I assume they're warm-blooded, so on a sliding scale of "Mammal" or "Reptile," I'd put them closer to "Mammal." I think I conceptualize that almost reflexively -- I identify with them more that way. Thus, the canines. Chomp!

Ooo! I like that! Trying to follow the twisty tail around the loops makes my eyes cross though. I think I'll do it again. :whee: *Twisty knotty things. I can't resist following them.*
