View Full Version : If Pern acutally existed, would you go? And what would you be?

If Pern actually existed, would you leave good old Terra and help colonize? Remeber it's a fifteen year journey through space, in a deep sleep tank. And there would be no real civilized living conditions of any form for probably three to ten years. (I'm talking about within the next five to ten years here, folks, not the far future in which the original colonists lived.) Not to mention Thread, of course. How can we forget the scourge of the Universe? So....would you go? It's a one-way trip....
If I were still single, and not a mommy, I would, and I think I would try to become a WeyrHarper....

Personally, I would.

Well, if i never get to stand as a candidate and suceed at impression, I'd want to try being in the minecraft. I like being underground. :D

I would with no hesitation and I would love to be one of the first dragonriders or if that could not happen then I would want to be one of the founders of the Pernese teaching methods and be sucessful in making the HarperHall what it is.

I would go in a heartbeat :bouncy:. When I got there, I would try to be one of the first dragonriders, but if I failed at that, I would try to become a veterinarian, or a dolphineer.

I had to think a bit about this before I answered. Though not as old as Kitty Ping ( ;) ), I'm not a young'n!!

Finally decided that yes, I would, provided hubbie came too......and that they had relatively decent indoor plumbing!!! Amazing how important that is to me!!! :-D.

As to what we would do...hubby would definitely be on or around the sea, fishing and sailing, and would ultimately probably start a seahold. For me, I probably would work with the plants...love to plant, watch it grow and tend to them. After all, you need veggies and salads to go with that fish!!!

AnnMarie
26th December 2004, 01:31 PM
Considering what the Earth had become by that time...yup. I might even go as Dolphineer Support Staff. Of course, I'd want my family with me. Well, at least my daughter, mother and brother. Not sure if hubby could survive. My niece couldn't, so taking my sister and co would be out. But yeah, I'd go.

They've got horses, birds, dogs, and cats on Earth, plus modern conveniences and luxuries. Yes, they just had a war, but since the question presupposes my having lived through that, it's no longer really an issues. I think the big kicker with Pern is that they want no contact--strikes me as being like volunteering to move off to a religious commune with no outside world contact. No, thanks. I like my luxuries, and besides, apparently they've got space travel--maybe I wouldn't be living on Earth at all, but on Mars or the Moon, or First Centauri, or who knows where. Pern's rather limiting.

Pern is a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. I like my creature comforts and can't see myself living in caves, even grand caves.

27th December 2004, 02:24 AM
This took me a lot of thinking, but I believe I would go. We assume that I would've lived through the war, so I can guarentee that I would be sick of just about everything that has to do with the war. I would want to be a Dragonrider, but if that failed, I would try being a good old seemstress.(no laughing please... for I CAN sew!)

27th December 2004, 03:38 AM
I really don't know if I would go or not. Given the same circumstances the colonists faced it might be a yes. They were leaving behind a nasty war and a lot of terrible memories. They all thought they were moving to a safe place and they did have the creature comforts, all the houses they put up had plumbing etc. What I would miss is books. I barely leave the house without a book in my bag and not to have that escape ..... Even with the challenge of colonizing a new planet I'd need the down time. :)

I would go at the first opportunity. I see what we have done to this planet and crave a chance to start over. It wouldn't be easy but I am up for the challenge. As horrifying as it is, I don't think I would even try for dragonrider. I would be happy to be a craftmaster in something like weaving.

Well, if I can put a few stipulations on it, I'd go in a heart beat! First, hubby has to come too! And Mom, my sis, her hubby and our little Annie. If they agree to come along, I'm game for it! Sure it would be hard work upon arrival! But we're a pretty tough lot in our own right! Of course I'd want to be a dragon rider. Who wouldn't want a lifetime soul mate? If I wasn't chosen to impress, I'd opt for either a vet or dolphineer! Anything to do with animals. And if I couldn't do that either, then give me a birth on one of the sailing vessles! Lots of sailing experiance here! :) I've lived without a great many creature comforts for extended periods of time (hunting season every year!) so that wouldn't bother me. And the chance to hunt new game! That would be interesting! So many reasons to go, so few to stay here! Yep! Sign me up!! I'm ready to go!!

If all of my medical issues vanished, I'd go. My ideal job would be government... and I like flying, so Weyrwoman. (Though I wouldn't like not fighting.) If I failed at Impression, I'd go for one of the crafts--maybe healer--and try to get as high as I could there. :ok:

I would go, i think. I would want to be helping to run things i think, in a weyr (whether as a dragonrider or not) or a hold/area, or teach. But of course when we would sign up for the trip, we would not know about the firelizards or the dragons.

But I would go, because as much as i like this level of technology we have here, we have ruined this planet. I would like to start again if possible, and look after it this time.

I'd go, absolutely, no questions asked. Beautiful new world, fresh and unpoluted. Even though theres no good printed books, Pern is just about all I read, so whats the point? ;) I'd want to be a dragonrider. It would be tough, and no plumbing, but having a real live dragon is definately worth it.

30th December 2004, 06:01 PM
Hard question, believe it or not...

I'm female and Pern is pretty much male dominated...so that's one reason not to go.

I don't like kids...colonist women were expected to bear many children, one didn't actually have to raise them since they could be fostered, but you still had to do the pregnancy thing...there's another reason not to go.

I'd love to be a dragonrider (green) or a dolphineer and have a firelizard (or dozens) for a pet...so that's a reason to go.

If I couldn't be a dragonrider, I'd want to be a Beasthandler...so that's another reason to go.

So that's 2 votes for staying and 2 for going...so I'd probably stay home...the only sure way I would go, is if I could change genders...lol.

Would be there before they finished asking me if I could go. Would have to be a healer/dragon rider. Know a lot about healing and herbs and could be very useful to the people of Pern. Wouldn't care what color of dragon. Would just like to have the freedom to go where I am needed, when I am needed.

i think, all things considered, i'd go. i used to think "in a heartbeat", but i think now i'd probably be a bit more thoughtful of the decision. ;)

however, i think it would still be yes. in a beasthold (no aspirations towards riding dragons for this one) either caring for the runners, or the canines.

yes, adding to the birth rate was an important consideration, but skill was also, so i'm sure there were those who were past an age to reproduce, but were still valuable members of the colony - we didn't meet everyone, remember ;)

and the male dominated society? you think this one's not? perhaps not as overt as on pern, but don't kid yourself, this is still largely a man's world. and while many of the women we met seemed to have hold of the short end of the stick, we did meet a few, here and there, who had partners who were very considerate of them. like it was here on earth for so long, women would have to change the social thinking, a step at a time.

i don't know, i guess it's the pioneer blood that runs in my veins, but i'd like a shot at building something new :ok:

i would go and not turn back despite the threat of thread falling and the possibility that the people on that pern might be or might not be different than most people on earth. Well if it would be exactly like Anne Mcaffrey's Pern i would go.

I would really like to be a dragon rider because i would like for a dragon to be my best friend. If i could not become a rider then perhapse a swordsman and if the riders would let me take care of a dragon for a short while then i would.

DuchessPariah
9th January 2005, 07:00 AM
Hold up, people!

The colonists were COMPLETELY unaware of Threadfall! They were startled at the discovery later. Thus, that would NOT be a factor in your decision.

Also, since there was no Threadfall, there were no dragons. Just firelizards. Thus, no Weyrwoman. No Weyrleaders. No position for any of you to be guaranteed. :-p

However, I am adventurous. I would likely still volunteer for the mission, should I receive the proper training in how to organize colonization efforts on a here-to-fore uncolonized planet. And, I would attempt to deal with Threadfall to the best of my ability when the threat arrived.

I already did something like that, a little. They started this Jewish community here in 1993, and we first came here to visit in '95, moved here for one year in 96-96, and came back in 2000. (We had to leave b/c Doc needed to do his residency somewhere.) So we were the first of only a few Jews to live here, helped start up the schools, etc., helped shape the Jewish and non Jewish community. We also did a lot about changing the real estate patterns here (we personally bought a house and totally renovated it to make a Jewish lifestyle easier) and we spend a lot of time gardening and doing outdoorsy types of things - a big cultural difference from living in inner city Brooklyn.

I'd go to Pern if there were a Jewish/Lubavitch community there.

And I'm with the Duchess about what would you be? When people first got to Pern, the whole feudal type system was not what their ideal was - all the crafts/holds/dragon stuff developed as a result of thread.

I do wonder what Doc would have been on Pern - a healer or a harper?

Seriously people, on the surface Pern may seem like a great place to live, with a lot less pollution than we get most places here and with those nice, shiny dragons.

I however, prefer all the nifty technology we have here to make our lives easier and more enjoyable in many matters. So beside its failings, I'll take this planet over Pern any day.
Like certain other people here, I wouldn't want to take the risk of getting devoured alive by thread. Then there's those felines running about the Southern Continent, diseases and a number of other things that I have probably forgotten about.

Yep, I'll take old Norway over Pern any day...unless you could find me a portal to certain of my imaginary worlds.

I'd go to Pern if there were a Jewish/Lubavitch community there.

I don't believe there would be, in all honesty. Maybe if we went now which I believe was the topic of this thread. But appartently in Anne's books, the end of the age of Religion would nullify there really even a Jewish (as far as religious) community there. Also, classification beyond the charter system was to pretty much be abolished.

I, after careful thought, would most definately go. Being the age I am, it seemed completely perfect for me. By the time the 8th year of Pern and the creation of the dragons, I would be Sean's age and stand a good possibility of making something of myself arriving when I was 15 (although in truth actually 30 being frozen). Of course, I don't have any truly remarkable crafts to speak of. But I may be a dragonrider or a vet. Fisher wouldn't really be my forte' but I don't know. I would surely go providing my mom came with me.

Now I'm only 14 right now and this could be just childish haste, but give me the chance and i would go. I don't have anything i would particularly want here, 'cepting all my books. Now the weight limit is about 20 Kg, and a textbook weighs about 1 Kg, so I would get all my books published in small print in about 3-4 of those and get them waterproofed, so that takes about 5 Kg, so i can use the rest on my keepsakes, and maybe a portable flamethrower *grin*. Really, though, I'd jump at the chance to live on Pern. Now, *if* I could be born there with all my memories, say, in the 9th pass, that would also be awesome. But I'd settle on just getting there and seeing thread.

Of course, getting there at my age would mean I would get to explore. But if i was born there, I could be a harper. Riding a dragon would be awesome, but I don't know if I would be up to it. Of course, I might stand for impression, but I would much rather be a harper. I would probably be a good teacher, and i would love to learn to make instruments. My voice stinks now since it cracked, and I would not want to be a drummer. Healercraft would be okay, i guess, though i would possibly be to squemish (or however you spell it.) Not minercraft, farmercraft, tanner, fisher, or smith would be good for me, though they would be okay.....

If I went there now, and landed, then my top wanted proffesion would be dolphineer, and if I was born there, my top wanted proffesion would be harpercraft, until AIVAS comes. But not printercraft, please.

That's all for now.

for now, an avid pern fan,

If I went on the colony ship, I'd most likely be a computer person. It would be cool to work with AIVAS! Then I would most likely become a farmer or some sort of botanist. If I were in the ninth pass, I'd love to be a dragonrider, a harper, or just a holder woman living out my own little life. :)

given the premise of the question: going with the original colonists, who hadn't a clue about Thread and hadn't invented dragons, I'd have to say, uh, no. Farming is boring, the pastoral life is unappealing, and knowing that there was so much more and I was stuck on just one rock forever . . . that bugs me now, I don't think I'd subject myself to that voluntarily.

Now if I was born into a later time, I wouldn't mind so much, especially if I could be a journeywoman or holdless trader.

Are you kidding me? No pollution and a whole planet to range in with nobody trying to shoot at or blow up anything? I'd give up screenwriting to go...

And with no sharks in the oceans or anything that might want to eat me besides thread, I'd likely want to be a dolphineer.

Of course, if we could get a guarantee that Hugh Jackman and Robert Chapin and Viggo Mortensen would go, too, it'd make the destination a whole lot more inviting, thread or no thread

I live to camp. I think it would be like a life long camping trip. I don't use many technocraps anyway. I could live with using hide and stylus, and getting a runner to deliver messages. And if I were at Fort Hold or Benden, or the Weyrs, they have running water, so necessarry things wouldn't be a pain in the...you know.

Honestly, I'd like it.

An interesting question :)

I've long been fascinated with astronomy and have read a large number of books about colonising Mars. I have problems with the way some of the colonies go though. I'm against teraforming. I think humans should leave any planets they go to as untouched as possible. If that means living in a dome of some kind, so be it.

Anyway, would I go to Pern. May be. I'd want to bring my hubbie though (I think he'd stand a good chance of impressing a dragon). I've only read three Pern books so far, all from the 9th pass, so I have no idea how much the initial colonists knew of the planet they were going to. I'm sure the Pern they first encountered was different in many ways to the one I have read about. As a scientist I like to think I could help with exploring the new planet and help discover how different it is to Earth. I could also help teach any children. So yes I think I might go :D

I wouldn't hesitate to go. I would have high hopes to be a dragonrider if i failed i would do the next best thing a dragonhealer...imagine living on a planet with no pollition and no war! i think that woudl be awsome

Would it be possible to take a three-month vacation there? Assuming, of course, we could get there via jump-point, warp drive, or wormhole?

:D

Of course, we would also have to travel through time, wouldn't we?

Let's see... The original colonists probably left for Pern sometime between 22nd and 24th centuries. Plus a few additional hundred years, depending on which time you wanted to be on Pern...

I think it was worked out that it would be around about 6500 in Earth terms

i would go because of my children. for them to be able to run around freely without fear of being abducted or murdered or anything like that. i would take it in a heartbeat just for that consideration alone. when it came to what job i would want to do i would have to be with harper hall purely so i could keep an accurate history of the planet as we make it. im a historian anyway so i would love to do that but if i couldnt i would like to be a headwoman, i love organising people even when they dont want to be!

Oh, that far ahead? Do you know which thread discussed it? I'd thought around 1000 years in the future when they first moved there... that could give time for coming up with space travel technology, setting up and securing FSP, and the 200 years from EEC exploration of Pern to colonization, though the Planet Pirate series was alot sooner than that, I beleive it was not too far within this millenium... 2,360 I think?.

On on, if it was 1000 years in the future it would be more like 3,360 when they first got there, and then 4,360 by the time Lessa arrived on the scene, I think.

What difference does it make we would still have to travel far into the future to get there when the others go :redfruit:

It was a thread on the OKT and we'd worked out it would be arounf 4,000 by the time they got there in the first place so add 2500 years to that .
