heh... I'm doing what every fiber in my being is telling me not to do... I'm showing my art!!!!!!!!!!
Why am I so reluctant? Well, let's just say an artist is their own worst critic. LoL
So... without further ado... here is my work- some dragon and some not.
Bring on the comments! ;)
Ah.. and I apologize in advance if the pictures are a bit dark. :O
Okay... let me first say I really do not like the attachment limit here... NONE of my pictures ever want to upload no matter what I do (and I have no access to a picture resizer).... so unfortunately I have to post links. *sigh* I hate posting links!!!!!
Oh well...
Drawing of Ramoth Hatching sculpture (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/ramothsculpture.jpg) - This one I did several years back... it took me SOOO much erasing and re-doing to get it like that!
Rainbow Dragon (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/rainbowdragon.jpg) - heh.. this one was just plain fun to draw!
My Weyrwoman (Kalina) and her queen Pirenth (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/WWKalinaandqueenPirenth.jpg) - Ahhh... my first RP character for my own Weyr, Torayan (which I sadly just had to close because I don't have enough time! :( )
A "snakey" blue dragon (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/bluesnakeydragon.jpg) - Uhm... I just had to post this one. He was fun!
Drawing of Orlando Bloom's character, Will Smith, from Pirates of the Caribbean (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/WillSmith.jpg)- I'm NOT good at people and I am VERY VERY proud of this picture!
Drawing of Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp's character from Pirates of the Caribbean (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/CaptainJackSparrow.jpg) - I'm also pretty proud of this one, despite its imperfections :)
Fire Dragon (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/FireDragon.jpg)
Tinkerbell (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/Tinkerbell.jpg) - I LOVE Tinkerbell!!!!
Here's a work still in progress (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/dragoninprogress.jpg)
Last but not least, a horse!! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/decoratedhorse.jpg) - This definitely is NOT my best horse drawing... I'll post that one another time :D

Dude, I totally have that Ramoth sculpture. It's awesome, isn't it?
Your drawing of that sculpture is definitely your best piece posted so far, though your Kalina, Jack Sparrow, and Will Turner drawings show a lot of potential-- you have an excellent eye for value (light and shade). Just remember to map your drawings out with light scructure lines and shapes first, to make sure things don't get a little crooked, and to help you maintain proportion. :>
On the whole, nice work! I look forward to seeing more. It's fun to watch people progress. :>

Wow. I am humbled at my smattering of talent. Orlando Bloom's character, however, is WIll Turner, not Will Smith. (I love the movie sooo much and i've seen a hundred times). Well, not really a hundred, but lots. All you're drawings are good. Quite well done.

Did I seriously write Will Smith?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :faint: I did!!!! :faint:
I totally meant Will Turner, and I SO know that as I've seen it a million times and absolutely adore Orlando!!!
Oh the humanity!
And thank you.
I shall now go beat myself for the mistake. ;)

I love your sense of detail--you take the time not only to shade *cough*something I need to actually do sometimes*coughcough*, but you draw in individuat scales and are able to make them look balanced, and yet natural, as if they would move with the dragon.
I like the detail you put in to "Fire dragon", as well as the color on "rainbow dragon". Your "snakey dragon" is very cute--shows off a lot of originality (they are called "wyverns", if you're interested) and it shows me that you have a lot of potential for crafting your own dragons.
That's what I love about the fantasy genre--you can draw a dragon any way you like, McCaffrey style, or your own, and it's still a lovely dragon!
You show a lot of potential, especially with the Will Turner picture--very nice shading, and the picture has dynamic, you can still see his attitude in the sketch.
Awesome job! I can't wait to see more of your work! ^_^

Wow, thank you!!!! :hugs: I love doing scales... they add so much more to dragons!!! When its just smooth hide it seems so... 'fake' I guess. And thank you.. I'd forgotten the word wyvern for some reason! :D
Shading is hard to get blended naturally I've found... but it adds a realistic edge that I try and shoot for.
Now... let's see if I can transfer my detail-oriented mind and creativity to the sculpture I'm starting today. Wish my luck!!!

Btw, if you're using graphite pencil, the shading can be blended using a blending stump. One of my most useful tools, other than the pencils themselves, of course

And I've used blending stumps before and found that the shading was too.. hmmm... obvious. I know that's not the word that I was thinking of... oh, Harsh!! It didn't look natural... I just need to try a different kind, I think.. :)

My dragon sculpture is the next section up till the *** :D
http://photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/?action=view¤t=acoveredbase1.jpg
The very start (second pic):
Pic 2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/bcoveredbase2.jpg) - First I made a wire base. Then I rolled out some Sculpey for the very bottom and molded it to the wire circle. After that I covered the vertical wire with clay to start my base.
Fleshing it out:
Pic 3 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/cstep2-1.jpg) - Here I've just added some more Sculpey to flesh out the body and some more of the base... LOOK the chest and stomach formed themselves... I didn't do that knowingly ;)
Pic 4 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/dstep2-2.jpg)
Pic 5 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/estep2-3.jpg)
Pic 6 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/fwwirearms.jpg) - Now, since I had enough of a body I added wire in for the base for the arms.
Pic 7 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/gwwirearms2.jpg)
Pic 8 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/hheadarmsandtail.jpg) - Next I fleshed out the arms, hands and head. I've also added a tail (which you can see better in the next picture).
Pic 9 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/iheadarmsandtail2.jpg)
Pic 10 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/jheadarmsandtail3.jpg)
Adding Detail: Pic 11 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/kdetailwoutwings.jpg) - Then was time for more detail... I added his eyes, eyeridges, horn and neck spines/ridges, as well as shaping his 'fingers'
Pic 12 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/lcloseupofhead-unpainted.jpg) - Just a close up of the head
Pic 13 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/mdetailwoutwings2.jpg)
Pic 14 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/nwings.jpg) - For the wings I rolled out some Sculpey and pressed the wire 'outline' into it. Next I cut off the excess, molded it to the wire and shaped the wings (Yes, they are two sizes on purposes :D )
Pic 15 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/owingson.jpg) - Only after I got the detailing added on did I want to put the wings on. I securely attached them (or so I hoped) and then started smooting out the entire piece.
Pic 16 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/pwingson2.jpg)
Pic 17 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/qwingson3.jpg)
Pic 18 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/rwingson4.jpg)
The finished product!
Pic 19 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/sfullbody-painted.jpg) - Then, after baking, it was time to paint!!! At first it was just solid dark blue w/dark purple swirls, but after some thought I added light bluish/purple swirls for more effect
Pic 20 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/tfullbody-painted2.jpg) - And look, the wings (nor anything else) fell off!!!!!!!
Pic 21 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/ufullbody-painted3.jpg)
Pic 22 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/vfullbody-painted4.jpg)
Pic 23 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/wmostofbody-painted.jpg) - After more thought I went with a shiny protectant rather than a matte one
Pic 24 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/xheadshot-painted.jpg)- And here's just a close up of the head to show more detail.

No. Das is an air dry clay and Sculpey is an oven-bake polymer clay.
Which is more efficient? Would one be more sturdy than the other? I know that sculpey sometimes cracks when it's baked and has to be refined afterwards, so would the airdry clay be better in that respect?
But I suppose it'd have to be sculpted alot faster though, it'd be malleable for alot less time...

Sculpey has never cracked in the oven for me. It is salt dough that does that.
What it can do is sag while it's baking. To prevent that, prop it up with foil. To prevent burns, cook at a lower temp.
When it's done cooking, wait for it to cool before handling. Warm sculpey is very brittle.

It's never cracked for me, either. Though it HAS turned brown at the edges but I've always been painting it, usually, so it hasnt' mattered.
But it does NOT smell good while baking

I'd just read in smellybug's (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18287) tutorial that it cracked sometimes. Glad to know it doesn't always though :D Now just to find an oven large enough... :erm:

What is Hermione (http://photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/?action=view¤t=IMG_2591.jpg) looking at that seems to have shocked, surprised or perhaps frightened her.

Well.... Hermione isn't supposed to be any of those things... the picture I drew it from is attached.
And for the horse I used acrylic paints, and as an added bit of information I dabbed the paint on the majority of the painting instead of just brushing it on. :D

The lizard looks better than the unicorn, but they're both good! :D I think I like the lizard better than the rose, but I think that's just me liking those sorts of things - like lizards, more than flowers, maybe LOL
I have no doubts that with a bit of practise you'll be able to do a beautiful unicorn! :D

I find that the blending sticks work best in small areas. If used over a large area, for me at least, it turns out looking uneven or blotchy.
And the most recent picture, you did that SOOO well, I knew it would look good, but you far exceeded my expectations! :twohearts

Well, to accent areas that would naturally have highlights and shadows and stuff... like higher areas will have lighter accents, and deeper grooves and such will get shadowed. Now I just have to figure out WHERE all those places are...

Great job on the fireworks, Kalina! :ok: What kind of camera do you have? Digital or film?
Fireworks are hard to capture. I just tried my hand at it tonight...didn't go as well as yours. I had one halfway decent shot of the bunch - the rest were squiggly or blurry. Of course, it would help if I had a tripod. It made some really interesting designs though. But that's okay, I was just playing so I could learn how that mode on my camera works. It's only took me a year. ;) Next up is the macro mode....
