View Full Version : My Dragon is done!!!!!

Yup... that's right! It's done!!
Now, before I (nervously) post the link to the pictures I would just like to ask everyone to be not too hard on it. It's not my strongest area of art to be sure, but I had so much fun making it and am actually very proud of myself!
Granted, it's not NEAR as good as our other two sculptors here ( ;) ) but it's all mine and my first. :heartbeat It's actually the model for a creature I'm going to create very soon... a Markehdian Dragon. For more info, check the ency soon!
However, I still have NO idea what to call my sculpture. Any ideas? :D
Oh yeah... the link *sheepish grin* I've added comments with a few of them as well.

Hmm... my computer's been like this all day! :banghead: :banghead: I can't even get another tab to open when I click that link, and I can't bring up the more smilies tab! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: It was working just fine last night!

Okay... I guess I have to post them all individually! :banghead:
Oh well... the very first picture is in that first post I did. Here are the rest, in order! And don't jump ahead.. it'll ruin the end product! ;)
Edit: The comments aren't showing up!!!!!!!!! Okay fine... I'll put them here!
The very start (second pic):
Pic 2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/bcoveredbase2.jpg) - First I made a wire base. Then I rolled out some Sculpey for the very bottom and molded it to the wire circle. After that I covered the vertical wire with clay to start my base.
Fleshing it out:
Pic 3 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/cstep2-1.jpg) - Here I've just added some more Sculpey to flesh out the body and some more of the base... LOOK the chest and stomach formed themselves... I didn't do that knowingly ;)
Pic 4 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/dstep2-2.jpg)
Pic 5 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/estep2-3.jpg)
Pic 6 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/fwwirearms.jpg) - Now, since I had enough of a body I added wire in for the base for the arms.
Pic 7 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/gwwirearms2.jpg)
Pic 8 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/hheadarmsandtail.jpg) - Next I fleshed out the arms, hands and head. I've also added a tail (which you can see better in the next picture).
Pic 9 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/iheadarmsandtail2.jpg)
Pic 10 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/jheadarmsandtail3.jpg)
Adding Detail: Pic 11 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/kdetailwoutwings.jpg) - Then was time for more detail... I added his eyes, eyeridges, horn and neck spines/ridges, as well as shaping his 'fingers'
Pic 12 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/lcloseupofhead-unpainted.jpg) - Just a close up of the head
Pic 13 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/mdetailwoutwings2.jpg)
Pic 14 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/nwings.jpg) - For the wings I rolled out some Sculpey and pressed the wire 'outline' into it. Next I cut off the excess, molded it to the wire and shaped the wings (Yes, they are two sizes on purposes :D )
Pic 15 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/owingson.jpg) - Only after I got the detailing added on did I want to put the wings on. I securely attached them (or so I hoped) and then started smooting out the entire piece.
Pic 16 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/pwingson2.jpg)
Pic 17 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/qwingson3.jpg)
Pic 18 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/rwingson4.jpg)
The finished product!
Pic 19 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/sfullbody-painted.jpg) - Then, after baking, it was time to paint!!! At first it was just solid dark blue w/dark purple swirls, but after some thought I added light bluish/purple swirls for more effect
Pic 20 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/tfullbody-painted2.jpg) - And look, the wings (nor anything else) fell off!!!!!!!
Pic 21 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/ufullbody-painted3.jpg)
Pic 22 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/vfullbody-painted4.jpg)
Pic 23 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/wmostofbody-painted.jpg) - After more thought I went with a shiny protectant rather than a matte one
Pic 24 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/RWeath9/My%20Dragon%20Sculpture/xheadshot-painted.jpg)- And here's just a close up of the head to show more detail.

:O Thank you!!!!!!!!!! :hugs: It took me a few days to figure out the colors, and some of it just sort of happened while I was painting along. :D I love it when that happens and turns out so great! :heartbeat

Ooh! It's good to have more sculptors around!
I really like the paint job. The gloss realkly enhances the colors, etc. What did you glaze it with? I'm interested!

The stuff I use is Future brand floor finish. Works really well. Is that the "protectant" you use?

LoL.... no, it's not floor finish. It's actually made to use on finished craft products like ceramics or woods. Darn... it's a pretty popular brand too... *goes off to search art supply website*

Found it! It's a brand called Delta, and it's the Gloss Interior Varnish. I use it for all sorts of things, all the time. It's nice to protect painted wood projects, too (smaller scale... not something huge! though I'm sure you COULD if you wanted to buy several bottles of it. I think I've had an 8 oz bottle of it forever though! :D )

I always do clay thingies on a small scale (sometimes as small as one centimeter high). It saves clay.

And no, I don't unfortunately. Any I HAD are YEARS old and really no good (and either broken, given away, or *gasp* thrown away), really. LoL I will be making more now though.. now that the 'bug' has bitten me good :D ;)
I'm already getting ideas!

It's an extremely good/admirable first try Kalina! you obviously put a great deal of thought into how it would come out, and I agree the colours look really good on him/her! :ok: :D
Yes, do try again and again and again!!

:blush2: I'm very flattered... I really am. Actually, never in a million years did I ever think anyone would say that!
But really, I'm not that good at sculpting. I can do stuff like this (http://wewoka.deviantart.com/art/Blue-Rose-30756152) a lot better than I can do dragons, or anything else in clay for that matter. Bronzie (known as Bronze-Dragonrider for his full screen name here... also my husband ;) ) would probably argue otherwise, but you should see HIS stuff. Or even Monkeysrule's stuff. :good:
But thank you very much! I'm glad you like it so much! :D

 With animals, I'm afraid not. Actually, I haven't sculpted any more dragons/animals since that one (which Bronzie actually rescued from me... I almost, er, got rid of it. :gag:).
Roses, though, I can do fairly decently.

Soooo xD How much are you charging for a rose, or a dragon, or both? :D I'd really like to have a blue dragon on my desk <3
I have seen Bronze-Dragonrider's dA page as well as yours! I am most impressed by both galleries. I'm so glad I found you two! 8D
Have you ever thought about making a scene lamp... kind of like this: http://www.cabinplace.com/rusticlightingcdlampscenemoosepic.htm but with your dragons and roses? I've been looking for something like this... One of my friends in high school had a sister who made a scene lamp... the scene was a fairy bathing in a lake, it was the prettiest lamp I've ever seen! She made hers entirely out of clay I think.... Hehe I'd really like one! <3 But yeah... if you could make one... I'd buy it... (so long as it doesn't break me financially I mean :hide:)
Congrats to you and Bronze-Dragonrider on your marriage (when did you get married?)--you two make a really good-looking couple. And I can tell you two will be really happy together. :)

For a rose? Hmmm... I'd have to think on that for a tad! :D As for the dragon, I'm not so sure I could duplicate it... I can think on that one, too. The roses I can definitely duplicate, but the dragon is a tad more difficult. ;)
And no, I've never really thought of making a lamp like that. I've taken plain ones and decorated them with beads and the like, but never with anything else.
Thank you for the congratulations! :D We were married on Valentine's Day of this year. I think we make a good couple, too.

The little dragon is beautiful. Thanks for posting the pictures of how it was made, that inspires me to have a go too. We don't have "sculpey" here, but there are other polymer clays that might work ...

I'm glad I could inspire someone else to try it! It's challenging, but SOOOO worth it when you can reach your finished product. :good:
One suggestion I can make is do NOT get an earthy clay. They dry too quickly to do extended work on a sculpture. Polymer based (and I think that's what Sculpey is... :erm:) clay are MUCH better if you can't finish the sculpture really soon.

When I tried to get Sculpey before it was described as a polymer clay. It was imported, ferociously expensive, and only available from Christchurch. That meant also paying for courier fees as well as the price of the clay. There's a craft shop in town that sells a much cheaper version. I used to use one called Das, but it had some of the same disadvantages as the earthy kind, and dissolved back into fibres when the little model animals I made for my son got dropped.

That's no good. Sculpey is pretty good stuff, and I love that it comes in colors as well. :D
But it can be expensive... :erm:
