Description on Zainal [Archive] - The New Kitchen Table

There is a fan art forum...

I picture Zainal as quite tall, maybe about 6'6" (he towered over Kris's 5'10"), well-muscled, and quite compact in spite of his height, as he was born on a high-gravity planet. He has gray skin, yellow eyes, a patrician nose, grayish hair he wears in a ponytail (after a few months on Botany at least), good posture, and full but not blubbery lips. He's also hung like a donkey. ;) Drassi are shorter, with a wider nose and bigger, possibly too moist lips, poor posture and are chubbier. Rassi look even more barbaric. No Catteni has facial hair, all have yellow eyes. I also picture their lips to be the same color as the rest of their skin rather than pink for some reason. Catteni women are squat and don't have much of a figure.

sweet! thanks. what about their ears though? are they cat like or are more humanish. i have seen pitures thromthe game and the book covers so it is slightly confusing.

That's a very good question, but humans disguised as Catteni didn't have to modify their ears, so I'd assume they look quite human.

True ^^. but on the freedom's landing cover, there is a picture of Zainal and Kris on the cover and Zainal has pointed ears that is why I was confused. But thanks for that ^^ I will have to post up the consept art I am doing of him X3

Neat, but they wouldn't be wearing jumpsuits on Botany... They had some sort of wraparound cloth, although possibly with short pant legs, i. e. the Catteni issue. I have a real problem picturing what it would look like, though.

Same *nods* that is why I put them in the gear from the game instead. At lest till I can get some more info on the gear they wear on Botany ^^. Well all I can do is keep drawing and hope to come up with something better ^^.

I can't properly picture their coveralls either, though for some reason I keep picturing overalls when I think about what they look like... or at least something similar. I know that's probably far from accurate but it's what my brain keeps telling me. XP

The problem I have with the descriptions of Zainal is that AMc always describes his PUPILS as butter yellow. I'm fairly certain she meant irises, but it always disrupts my imaginary processes.

I think in the drawing you made Kris too short and not angular enough. But I see you're manga inspired anyway, which exaggerates certain features (such as eyes) so maybe that's not a problem for you.

There's a lot of comparison in the books of Zainal to Arnold Schwarzenegger, so I tend to imagine him as looking more like AS.

Wasn't Kris 6 feet tall? It always seemed way too tall to me, until I looked around and realized that LOTS of women here in this area of the US fit the 6' tall, blond Scandanavian look. (Big Norwegian population over here.)

Kris and Zainal WOULD have worn uniforms/jumpsuits when they were masquerading as Catteni Drassi, etc.

I dont think I have seen him as looking to much like arnie though I do know that Kris is 5'10" and that Zainal towers over her. Though I dont know what his actural hight is. I could always try and give him the arnie body and see what that looks like though. *pulls out her sketchbook* I can also do it more realistic but first I want to try and get zainal as close to everyone's liking first ^^.

Same too sometimes X3 Though in the first book it says that Kris was wearing something similar to a tunic that formed into like a short dress that cling to her body and the bottom ended up halfway up her thighs.

Yeah, it was modled after one of those tight mini-skirt dresses. I remember that. =P God I hate those... mostly cause I can't wear them. lol

I'm just glad she wasn't wearing daisy-dukes because she'd really have had problems then. XD

Well in the copy I have it says irises so I'm pretty sure that's what she meant. But yeah I see what you mean, typos like that can completely alter the way someone views something.

I think I remember reading that, though I only remember seeing it once. Since I'm re-reading the series again I'll have to make sure to keep my eyes open for it... Nope, Kris is 5'10". For some reason I thought she was 5'11" until I reread it again just a couple days ago.

Man i was looking up ref pics of good old arnie and damn, he had muscles ontop of muscles =P. this will be interesting now to draw Zainal. I am happy that I am asking for opinions other wise I would have missed out on alot.

First of all, Zainal wouldn't be that much taller than Kris - bigger but not much taller. She's almost 6 feet, and 6 feet 6 inches was too tall to masquerade as a Drassi.

Second of all, she was wearing the miniskirt sheath on Barevi, but lost it when she was captured and sent to the communal showers. Everyone got a coverall - which I picture as a one-piece jumpsuit that covers all - long sleeves, long pants, one garment.

Yes someone did point that out that Kris would most likely come up to Zainal's shoulders. And with the coverall being like a jump suit that you said is a lot easier to draw ^^ I will do other clothes on them if anyone can find it in the book with a good description?

And what about the boots/shoes? Or are they okay?

Here is another go at drawing Zainal. I did try and do the eyes bigger but it really didnt look right to me. That or I need to try a different approch at it.

I mostly used the concept drawings from the game and a face shot of arnie to try and get the face a little better. But anyway. Enjoy!

I like it a lot but I'd make the nose more patrician and less "slit" looking, and make the ears normal.

I think about shoulder height for Kris would be good b/c I am about shoulder high to Doc and that's about a 4-5" difference. And to a woman like Kris, even that much of a diff. would seem like towering.

I think of Kris as tougher looking than you drew her (I know you're anime influenced, so there's always THAT) and did you put her hair in a braid? B/c that's how she wore it except when she was masquerading as a Catteni.

I'm trying to remember, how did those boots come off? Weren't they sort of shapeless material items that formed around the foot? I forgot all about the boots, jj, until you mentioned that.

Cool pics! But I think Kris would be shoulder height, or maybe a little it shorter. Not as short as you had her in the first sketch. I'm 5'9" and my bf's 6'4" and i come up just barely to his shoulder, and I stand like I'm at attention b/c here I'm considered short. (but then I grew up around a bunch of tall men).

**((The next bit is NOT meant to sound racial or mean towards any ethnicity))**

ON the single pic of Zainal's face, make his nose a little more normal for a Caucasian male. Don't make it so squished, like that of an African. (that's the part I'm worried about getting burned on) I remember in the book the Kris stream-of-conscious descrip. of Zainal the first time she really looked at him after she slugged him had something like "he had an almost patrician nose, even if there was more of it than an elephant would claim." That is not a direct quote b/c I don't have the book in front of me (or anywhere near) at the moment.

I think the clothing the Catteni gave them would be much like a military coverall. It would be long sleeved with long pant legs, and cinched a little in the middle as though by a belt or a band of elastic. (I was in Navy Boot Camp and know what those things look like, I saw them enough). Later on, they may have modified them to two pieces, like Utilities. (pants and a long sleeved shirt) I don't think they would have used much short sleeved things since they are on an unknown world and won't want to risk injury because they didn't protect their arms.

The shoes were (as was mentioned up there ^^^ somewhere) just material that folded around the feet comfortably. I remember that on the long trek from the original drop site to Ayres, her feet didn't have any rub marks or blisters. They were just sore. So the shoes should be well fitted (for pieces of cloth that are folded around the feet.)

LOL The nose is the hardest bit as well as the ears =P I dont have any ref pics on what a patrician nose looks like only that it supose to be more upper class, aristocrats.

If I could get an exsample that would be fantastic. Right now though I will work on Zainal so I can at lest get his face right, that is the hardest bit at the moment ^^

Ah well =P Back to the drawing board with me ^^

I know it's not much of an example Jinn, but can't seem to find any examples on google images, the second doll down is described as having a patrician nose

They had grey hair as well as skin. I remember some being described as being toothy, Zanial and Kamiton seemed to be a rarity as far as good looking Catteni were concerned. Wasn't the reference to Arnie about Zanial saying "I'll be back" ?

It's in the first or second book, I know that much. Will update when I find it.

Yep they had slate gray hair I think it was... And I know that the hair came out too blackish due to the lines to make the hair a little more real... I will see if I cant lighten that up a bit without having to colour the picture again ^^;

I'm also busy with a freedom's landing picture for the competition.

In my edition it also mentions that Zainal has yellow, buttery PUPILS and black IRISES. Well, that does distort your image, whether its a typo or not. It probably is because when Kris, Zainal, Astrid, Joe, Sarah, and Oskar investigated the structure they found at the ocean, and sat down eating clams by the fire, she specifically described Zainal's yellow eyes dancing...Perhaps this could be because, although he has yellow pupils, these are bigger than ours, with the black irises perhaps a much smaller outline?? That's how i'm going to draw it, so you must go and look in the art forum 2 weeks from now;)

Also, Zainal has a wide mouth and, for me, a wide face; his build is very big and i think in that sense he looks a lot like Arnold S. - the fact that he has a bigger build/bone structure as most there on Botany. But when that poisen-filled Botany thorn caught him in the leg and he was lying in the 'hospital', i remember Kris "...bathed his hot face, moving down his chest and arms...He wasn't quite as heavily muscled as she'd thought with the bulky coverall disguising a body that, by any standards, was beautiful." (Freedom's Landing, p.235).

Guess what i've been up to this weekend:cool: :roll:

But that also gives me the idea that the coverall is indeed more like the more loose-fitting standard military issue here on earth; AM also says it's a brownish-grey, and it makes sense for it to cover the whole body because you don't know when a deadly insect might sting you on the calve or something...

I think, to me, Zainal has more of the build of a 100m sprinter (you know, the ones you see at the Olympic games, probably spiking away also to look like that); but that's the general idea i have of him; he is also very lithe and agile, and FAST: when he sprints after the second drop to save the people on the field, he sprints full-out and looks like a speedy-conzales to Kris, who thought she could keep up with him before. So in order for him to be so fast he should of course be on a lighter-gravity planet such as Botany, but also more compact (as was said above) that layer-upon-layer of muscle like Arnie.

But i'm going to try a 100m sprinter build and see what comes of that (of course it's going to be covered by the bulky coverall so i'm not going to outline all the muscles, in this picture :D

Oh trust me that helped me alot! I just recently got my own copies of the books now, before they were only on loan.

Maybe we can bump heads a come up with a good pic of how we think Zainal looks like ^^. Plus that (insert random swareword here) coverall too, that has been giving me grief. Propbably because everyone has their own version of what zainal and the coverall looks like.

I will be looking forward to seeing it X3 Yes! Someone else that does Freedom fanart!

Here are a few images of soldiers wearing what I always imagine the overalls to look like - mind you I always imagined them as grey as in the black & white photos rather than the khaki normally worn. :laugh:

Personally, I imagined Kris as Milla Jovovich, but with a more full figure. But everyone has a different image, and I think that your drawings are great for her :D Maybe just a little less prominant nose.

Those coveralls are like the ones we wear in the Navy. But ours were blue, and a little newer looking...:) I like Jolet's face of Kris, but I also like Jinnjinn's...Oh...I could never be any kind of art judge. I would put them all at first and then see whaty happens! :devil:

I wacked them into the clothes on the freedom game for the comp that Jax is having. Anyways! Tell me what you think as usual, it helps me a lot, though I do really like how this came out ^^

I really, really like this picture, it's awsume the only thing I'd personally change is the fact I always thought Catteni we're big guys, Zainal in this picture looks a little too normal. but saying that it's a really good image of him and I think it's the best. He looks supper sexy and Kris is spot on as well.

Yes I don't know who many times I have gone over it and pointed out flaws that I need to work on ^^; ah well practise, practise and more practise ;)

Anyway I will be sorting out a cartoon style that I can do the characters in that is simple and easy to do so I can do a small freedom series fan comic for anyone to enjoy ^^. And now that I have finished study... my gods all that glorious FREEDOM XD!!!!!!! :bouncy:
