View Full Version : My Pern Music!!!

Brenda
20th July 2005, 11:26 PM
:bouncy: I have mentioned before that I have written music to many of the songs of Pern. It started with the Question Song - I started hearing music every time I read the words  and I had to put it down on paper. (This was completed long before I ever heard the Masterharper of Pern CD.) Now I have finally been able to get them printed out (I was able to download a music notation program on the computer here at work) and scanned, and will now begin posting them! :heartbeat

*edit* I was unable to attach them directly, but there are links a few posts down.

*edit* Scroll down for links to videos on Youtube!

Okay, I went and got a photobucket account, so here are the links:

The Question Song (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/QuestionSong.jpg)
The Fire Lizard Song (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/QuestionSong.jpg)
The Gather Song (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/GatherSong.jpg)
Song for Petiron (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/SongforPetiron.jpg)
Harper, Tell (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/HarperTell.jpg)
My White-Winged Craft (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/MyWhiteWingedCraft.jpg)
Brekke's Lament page 1 (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/BrekkesLament1.jpg)
Brekke's Lament page 2 (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/BrekkesLament2.jpg)
Eastern Sea Hold Song (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/EasternSeaHoldSong.jpg)

Most of them can be read straight, but some, like Harper, Tell and the Eastern Sea Hold Song need to have a little... not swing, but a looser interpretation. Also, I think the Fire Lizard Song might have been better in 12:8 rather than 6:8 - I was thinking of it in four groups of three at a time, but didn't realize I was singing it in 12:8. Enjoy the music!!! :note: :note: :note:

***edited - the Fire Lizard Song is now in 12:8, and Brekke's Lament is now in 3:4!***

LOL I suck at reading music and trying to think what it might sound like, it's a shame you can't record them Brenda - but as I was reading the words just then I had the tune from the MHoP CD running through my head   :D

I'm working on the problem of recording. I need a good recorder, first!

Fortunately I am blessed with the ability to sight-sing accurately and I like your Question Song.

Howwever, I had a bit of trouble with your Fire Lizard song as you seem to go from 3/4 to 6/8 time and back, and without an accompaniment to give the beat, it was tricky to get the gist of it.

Did you intend for the bars that appear to be 3/4 to have three beats, or is it two beats throughout?

Also, I wrote my own Fire Lizard song, so I had difficulty looking at the words and not singing my own tune.

Do you plan on writing an accompaniment to either of them?

Brenda
22nd July 2005, 12:09 AM
I'm not sure - I thought it was all in 6/8. I hear it in 6 or 3 rather than in 2, though.

I don't know anything about chords to write an accompaniment - I just have the tunes.

Here is the list of all my music:

The Question Song
The Fire-Lizard Song
The Gather Song
Menolly's "Song for Petiron"
My White-Winged Craft
Eastern Sea Hold Song (additional verse)
Brekke's Lament (additional verses)
Harper, Tell (additional verses)

Menolly's Story - expanded from "Menolly's Running Song", music not finished.

I'll try to get these up soon!

OK - I confess I stole your idea.

I only ever wrote two though - the Fire Lizard Song and Song for Petiron.

6/8 is always in two beats though, two beats divided into two. If it's three beats, then it's 3/4.

They're great! :ok:

Brenda

Maybe I'll try 12/8.

Robsia

Maybe I'll try 12/8.

Well, 12/8 is four beats in a bar (it's the compound equivalent of 4/4) - if you're "hearing" it in 3, then it should probably be in 3/4 throughout.

Brenda

The three I'm hearing it in is more like series of triplets, though -
one-and-a
two-and-a
three-and-a
four-and-a

I'll see what it feels like in 12/8.

I've added The Gather Song (http://photobucket.com/albums/a193/beappleby/Pern%20Music/?action=view&current=GatherSong.jpg)! This is about the same as "The Fire-Lizard Song" - a bright 6/8, with an accent on the first beat - I hear it in 6 rather than in 1 or 2.

Ok... For some reason, I have the odd urge to print these out and try to play them on my alto sax, just to see how bad I can murder a pernese song. J/k. The're wonderful, and I probally will play them later, if i feel like it.

I'm tempted to print them and play them on my flute. :D

Hm, not bad. I always sing my own tune to the Question song in my head too, but the melody seems to change every time I read it! I don't know if I could decide which melody to write down. I'm thinking of writing a real one to Wind Blossom's song, though.

Anyway, good job, Brenda! Which music writing software do you use? I only have a cheap one that doesn't print.

I used Finale Notepad - it has a free version you can download, and then you can pay for upgrades. I had to get an administrator to download it for me - and I no longer have access to that computer as it is still in North Dakota and I am back in St. Louis!

I have an appointment Monday to record my songs! It will be on a CD, but I will see if they can put them as computer sound files also; if not I will have to find out how so I can post them!

I have finished scanning the music! I rescanned some of them, so the original links won't work; I'll replace them in that post but I'm also putting them in here:

Okay, I went and got a photobucket account, so here are the links:

I'm so excited! I was able to use my school's sound studio to record my Pern songs! The guy made me two copies of a CD and is going to make the songs into MP3s too! I am so thrilled! It went really well, and it's a really good recording. Soon I am going to send one of the CDs and several copies of the sheet music to Anne with permission to use them on a second Pern CD... and even if she declines, now I will be able to share my music here!

Yippee!!!

Oh, and my sister noticed another wrong time signature :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Brekke's Lament should be in 3:4 time with pick-up notes (anacruses) rather than in 4:4. I can't believe I did that!

I looked at a couple of them and found them to be very good! I would respectfully make one suggestion (according to the rules of music theory). In "Petiron's song" you use some flat notes when the key signature is in a minor key with sharps...I would change those accidentals to sharps, such as Eb changing to D#, etc. Then it would be totally correct as written music. But I compliment you on the melodies...they are lovely!

I'm taking music theory this semester and I wish I had the program available to redo most of the songs! I keep finding mistakes now that I know better :banghead:

I'm glad you like them!

Can't wait to hear them, when you finally get them onto music files. :D I've always had my own ideas for Harper, Tell; Gather; and Easter Sea Hold, and I'm anxious to hear what your thoughts were!

Brenda
14th December 2005, 05:26 PM
Well, I was able to use my sister's roommate's computer to change the key signature of the Fire Lizard Song from 6:8 to 12:8, and Brekke's Lament from 4:4 to 3:4, but then I found out she didn't have a printer! So I saved them and emailed them to myself, and was trying to think of someone else I could ask, and finally I was over at my aunt's house and she let me download the program so I could open the music and print them! I scanned in the new versions - here are all the links:

So now I have all the music finished, I can stop putting it off: I am going to send it to Anne McCaffrey! I have a CD with me singing (it turned out pretty well, you can at least tell how the music is supposed to go) and several printed copies of each song, and I'm going to have to write a letter explaining about the music and the new verses I wrote... I am not being vain when I say that these songs do justice to the spirit of the books, particularly Dragonsong and Dragonsinger, and if another Pern CD were to be made, I would definitely give permission for my songs to be used. Especially the Fire Lizard Song - it is just so perfect in the bright, catchy, simple music - just like in the book!

I'm so excited! :bouncy:

Is there any way I could actually hear you playing/singing these?

Thank you!

I am glad that I was able to do justice to the music the way I hear it in my head.

One thing was interesting - I ended up changing the time on the Eastern Sea Hold Song, from the way I originally wrote it - I shortened the long notes in the chorus, because when I was going through it, it just seemed awkward.

Just ask anyone who was at the first UK gather about my version of the Question song, it even gave me the creeps & I wrote it!

I feel like you . . . I made up a lullaby and when I sing it it sounds like a lament . . . I need to brighten it up!

I'm going to print the music out and see what I can mangle . . . I've got 3 keyboards, a kids chord organ, and a two-tier organ . . .

Have you been able to view the videos? Because some of the sheet music doesn't quite convey what I had in mind - and I changed one of the songs.

Hey Brenda, I have been on here as a member for quite some time now, and I am kicking myself for not finding this thread and the music until now. Like every other musician who has looked at your work, I immediately picked up my cornet (My instrument in this case) and tried them through. Then of course found the video as I scrolled down, after trying a few of the notational scores first. The first impression of the few I tried was of the English traditional folk style and the video of both the "The Question song" and the "Firelizard song" proved this to be the case. (I have yet to view and try the rest) I am very impressed. However for some reason, although I have seen and heard the "The Firelizard Song" on video I keep getting "The Question song" for the notational version whichever link I click, so I have no idea what the notation looks like for "The Firelizard Song".
Also one minor and very small niggle, an idea of the tempo at the top of the page would help, as I found I was playing the Question song way too fast until I heard your video version. Off now to enjoy the rest.

Keep in mind that these are not perfect representations of the music as I sing it. But they give the correct pitches and generally the right rhythms.
