Ok its still a ways off but I called last night to reserve a room at the Marriot and the lady on the phone said that all the rooms were taken already. Shocking thought. I called the Hyatt and got the same response. I'm going to call the Atlanta locations this morning instead of the national numbers. I'll repost when I find something out.

I've started a thread in the PFBB also we had discussions on Room mates last night already ;)

Kool

Hope everyone has a wonnnnnnderful New Year.

If it's anything like last year, unless you say it's for D*C they'll tell you there are no rooms available, but I booked quite late & had no problem.

I was just thinking about D*C this weekend. :bouncy: I've convinced one of my friends to come along with me this year. I stayed at the Day's Inn last year but decided to book at the Mariott this year. So I'm glad to know that I need to call the local number to reserve a room (from Kool's PFBB link). :ok: Thanks!

So who else is going? :hopping:

I called all numbers I could find. I told them I was doing D*C and I told them I was not. All I got was "Sorry we are all booked up those days"

Until I called the local number.

The Kat and I got our room. :) Thanks Kool.

UPDATE: I have a room!! You have to call the local numbers.

* Toll-Free: 1-888-855-5701 for the Marriot <you can actually get on the elevators>
* Not toll Free 404 577 1234 for the Hyatt.

Both places have plenty of rooms left but they say they're getting several calls per day now reserving rooms. """""

TWIMC....I posted this on the PFBB, but am reposting it here as well for completeness.

Since I live near Atlanta, I can probably help out with pre-con setup of the Pern Room (Weyrfest Room). Whoever is in charge of that, let me know if you need the help.

Last year, a friend of mine (Bill Ritch) announced at D*C during the closing ceremonies that Colin Baker (from the old Doctor Who series) would be coming to D*C 2005. I wonder if that's been pulled off. :hopping: I hope so. :) :D :hopping: :) :D

For anyone looking to buy plane tickets early, I heard on the news today that Delta is getting ready to lower ticket prices. They've already dropped some. :ok: I'm thinking of waiting a bit longer to see if they drop some more. :bouncy:

I am so excited to go to Dragon*con again! I couldn't go last year, but I went in 2003, which was my first time. But I wonder how Weyrfest will turn out this year...I went to their webpage and I guess they don't have a director at the moment? Does anybody know what's up?

Anna stood down as director after last year's con, she said she'd been doing it long enough! Seems as though no-one's come forward to replace her yet :(

At present we aren't planning on going this year. Two years in a row already, and it Is pretty expensive . . . Have a wonderful time everyone. I think the one thing I'll miss the most will be the Emerald Rose concerts! That, and seeing everyone (but that goes without saying!)

Dawn
14th January 2005, 05:00 AM
Dragon*Con is held every Labor Day weekend - this year it's Sept 2-5. Here's a link to their website: http://www.dragoncon.org/ Right now, the 4 day membership costs $50, but will go up in price as D*C gets closer. The website gives you all the info for travel, hotels, etc... Just poke around and you'll find it. :good:

Kat
16th January 2005, 01:42 PM
Does it cost any extra... I'm shorthanded on the cash side of life!Does Weyrfest cost extra? No Dragon Con is made up of different tracks, they call them. And with in those tracks (they have their own room or section dedicated to the track) they have different panels, events and discussions.
The membership fee you pay gets you access to everything with the exception if I remember correctly an award banquet and a few writer's panels.(they were pre registered events).
We had a lot of fun,but being our first time suffered a lot from deer in the headlight syndrome. soooo much to see and do.!!!
We're planning another mode of attack to get maximum fun . :bouncy:
While the lack of Weyrfest would be a great loss if they can't come up with a director. D*C will still been an event if you can, you should expierence at least once. And they'll still be a group of the lot from here to which you're also welcome to join. We just may need to commandeer a room if we can't fit in the bar.(we aren't all drinkers it was a central location)

Dragon Con occurs about 3 weeks before AWA, so there is not a scheduling conflict.

Anime Weekend Atlanta (http://www.awa-con.com/) Sep 23-25 2005

Dragon Con (http://www.dragoncon.org/) Sep 2-5 2005

You should be able to do both unless you have some other conflicts.

If you pre register now the cost for both events combined is about the same as one event ticket purchased at the door. (D*C is about $50/four day pass and AWA is $25/3 day pass, at the present time (January), D*C is about $40/one day at the door, AWA is about $35/one day at the door.)

also Kunicon (http://atl.kunicon.com/) comes Memorial Day Weekend to Atlanta (more Anime)

We sent for our DC passes this week. That would be the BOY, the wife and I.

This will be my first DC. Second for the BOY and third for the wife, (the lucky sod).

The BOY is working on a costume, rather elaborate. If there is no Weyrfest room, does that mean no costume of Pern event. I'd hate to help the BOY with a project that will consume hundreds of hours if there is no where to show the final project. Not to mention the cost of materials and having the neighbor lady do the sewing.

FWIW... I would include as one of the practicalities: make it lightweight. They don't call this city 'Hotlanta' for nothing. We can have temperatures of 38°C (100°F) here at the D*C time of year, and it's usually sticky and humid to boot.

What D*C usually sends is a single postcard - last year it was green - that has your registration number on it. That is the only communication I have ever received from them. I believe Dawn is right - it arrives in May sometime, although it may take slightly longer to cross the big pond. I lost my postcard one year and they just have to look you up in the database, with a valid ID you should have no problem.

Your D*C registration number will be the same every time you decide to attend, it's good for 'life', but you have to pay separately each year for your passcard(badge).

I have a room booked solo at the marriott. If we need a place to hang out other than the bar at some point, I am happy to offer it up...

I would love to meet a bunch of you folks so make sure you let me know where you are if not at the bar at the Hyatt Thurday night...

I am flying in late Thursday so I hope I can find you... Also, how will I know who you are as opposed to the other legions that may be there?

First round is on me!!!

Aranel has been in email contact with him.

He was the big guy dressed ina green Renassaince out fit. He carried the banner for the parade with her.

X-posted from Pernese Friends:

I exchanged a few emails with Steven today and he *is* who I thought he was. FYI, he was in the green fantasy/renaissance getup at Weyrfest. He and I carried the Pern flag in the parade. I suggested a Pern costuming panel for Weyrfest, volunteering to head it or help with it. *gulp* He rather likes that idea so... what have I gotten myself into? ;) I also volunteered to make some banners for the group to carry in the parade and display in the room. If I do end up heading the panel, suggestions are welcome, though I have quite a few ideas already.

*stolen ruthlessly from Lady Underweyr*
Underweyr of Pern, anyone? :D

For those who are better at remembering names than faces, Steve goes by Keldrin at Weyrfest and has been an attendee for as long as I can remember (though, granted, my D*C memory only goes a few years back).

Pam has a picture of him thusly (http://pern.dreamhaven.org/dc2002pics1.php?pic=keldrin.jpg) (which isn't actually a word, thank you, I'm aware).

I remember him! I am sooooo excited because I am going!!! I wouldn't even look at this thread because, well because! Anyway, hubby said to take the kids and go so I made reservations (now he can't take it back). Staying at the Marriott this time instead of the Hyatt.

Now...do I do the costume thing or not?

Btw, anyone else arriving on Wednesday?

Just booked at the Hyatt. I would have liked the Marriott again, but they said they didn't have any more rooms at Dragon*Con rates. Bastards.

Still no roommate. I have no idea how I'm actually going to pay for four nights in this room. I am AWESOME.

Ian
21st May 2005, 01:05 AM
No they don't, but it's still cheaper than the Hyatt for us because we're there a full week (Hyatt quoted $100 a night more, AND wanted full payment in advance!!)

Wow. Well, I'm only there four nights, so $146 a night is pretty sweet. I'm pretty sure the Marriott would have charged me $150 (hey, the $16 saved makes a big difference when you're a Poor College Student. That's almost a whole pizza, right there).

I'll stop by the Weyrfest room and say hi so you can tease me in person.

Btw, you aren't still selling knives and carrying samples?

I'm not, no, though I do still HAVE my sample kit. ;>

I think I'd be able to go, IF I could get a roommate(s). This 2nd job I'm doing owes me some money, that should cover the plane ticket. But how do I find a roommate (someone I know/trust)?

Try the little advertised hotel that's about 30 feet away from the big ones. When I got there one year, there were still several rooms available. At 60 a night.

Maedhbh

Umm, does this hotel have a name?

Kat
30th May 2005, 08:45 PM
Here are some overflow hotels;

http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_location.htm#overflow

From the website.

There's quite a few not far from the hotel(s). But remember you'll be having to walk or get transport there.

It's expensive but if you CAN stay at one of the two hotels it's Better. roomies help.
But there's nothing nicer at 2am when you can crawl onto an elevator to your room.. *snickers* assuming you are in a condition to crawl.

Yeah -- that's really the only drawback to the overflow hotels. I stayed in one with a few buddies a couple of Cons ago, and after that I decided it was better to just fork over the dough for the Marriott or the Hyatt. It's a tradeoff: you pay less to stay at, say, the Holiday Inn, but if you want to leave the Con at midnight, you're walking through downtown Atlanta (which can get kind of seedy at night -- lots of unusually sketchy homeless folks around), possibly in an uncomfortable costume and very likely in a state of near-exhaustion. And, if you ARE staying at the Holiday Inn, you're walking about two blocks uphill first thing the next morning; if you're staying somewhere farther away, you're either walking that distance, waiting for a shuttle from the Con, or paying for a cab.

I stayed at the Hyatt last time. It was very convenient, except for the LOOONNNG waits for the elevators. I'm at the Marriott this time, so I'm hoping that will be a bit more sedate. That's where all the booths are anyway, and I didn't get to spend enough time in there last time. I definitely want to get a henna tattoo, so I hope there is someone there doing them.

hmm...been a while since this thread has gotten any posts...does anyone have any idea how the rooms are looking now? As soon as I get hom I'm going to get on my mum's case about it but she's a procrastinator (more so than me o.o) If not we can still go but we'll have to drive a while to D*C each day and likely miss a lot of the early events.

Just a tip for the folks that are driving and/or happen to have extra space in their luggage.

It would be a really good idea to bring an air mattress/cot/etc. or two with you. The hotels last year mixed up some of my friends' rooms and many of them wound up in single bed rooms. Not good when you have 4+ roommates. And all hotels' trundle beds were used up too. I'm not saying this will happen for certain, but they may come in handy if it happens to you or your friends. I will have an air mattress or two if anyone needs it.

Maedhbh
24th July 2005, 04:58 AM
<sighs> The cot I have is definately NOT transportable by plane.

Nenwen
24th July 2005, 10:27 PM
Maedhbh, if you are still looking for a few roomies, we got room for one more in ours at the Marriot. Ours is a 2 doublesized beds room and I can bring a twinsized airmattress if you can bring a sleeping bag.

That would make 5 in our room all together and for 5 nights it's a total of $150 each. I haven't got the taxes or other room charges added into that yet but can let everyone know when we all meet up.

Let me know via PM on the BB if you want a space in our room with us :bouncy:

Nenwen
25th July 2005, 01:48 AM
:ok: No problem. might could be we'll end up with a solid 4 in our room if we don't get a 5th but it still beats having only one person in the room at those prices. my uncle is letting me use the his card for my trip this year so I don't miss it a third year in a row :)
