Anyone else as ADDICTED to facebook as I am? It's a horrible addiction. It starts out as a harmless little way to waste time...then becomes THE waster of time...and yet so much fun! :O

I can't seem to figure out how to use it. It keeps telling me I need a school email address, and believe me it's been a LONG time since I was in "school"! Probably a good thing if I can't use it, if it's as addictive as you say!

nope. This was back in the dinosaur ages of 1970 to 74. So, I guess I'm out of luck.

I wouldn't say I'm addicted to it, but I do check it at least a few times every day. They only recently picked up my (small) college, so we even have a group called "Glad my small a-- school finally got Facebook." (Censored for the kiddies.)

Well, that leaves me out too. ;) I went to college in the early 90's, so the closest I got to a computer were the ones in the library.

oh, well that's disappointing. i belong to groups like 'friends of feeny', 'i went to public school, bitch', 'muggles who love hogwarts', etc. i heart facebook. i just got a new facebook pic today, too! I waited outside the stage door after avenue q and got a picture with the incredibly jumpable guy who does the voice and puppeteering of princeton and rod. (btw i definitely recommend avenue q for anyone over the age of 14 - SOOO good)

I sent off an email to facebook and got an "automatically generated" email back which basically said "read the FAQ's located at" blah, blah, blah. I'd like to use this, but I can see it's not going to be possible for anyone who hasn't been in college in the last ten years or so. Too bad. Might have been fun.

So, they've added a high school facebook which, I'm not gonna lie, I think is stupid. But, if any high school kids (US only, I think) want to join, it's facebook.com and you just need any kind of email addy (although you still need a college one for the regular facebook. And (I think) your profiles can only be read by other people from your hs, if your parents are worried about the privacy thing...at least, college students can't see them.

OMG, it's really sad how obsessed with facebook I am. It, this site, and livejournal are the ones I visit the most and I check facebook a few times a day to see if anyone has friended me. I'm in such groups as I Went to Private School Therefore I Am Better than You, I Love the Australian who Works in the Post Office, Singers Unite, Hardcore Harry Potter Fans, and one I made up, I Have More Friends on Facebook than I do in Real Life.

Here are some of the groups I'm in:

We have it a couple ways. The actual female dog spelling, b*tch, and biotch. There are also the "I went to private school biotch and 'female dog spelling'" Or "I went to private school and am way better than you." There are a bunch of other ones like that to.

I know but I don't swear unless I'm in a really, really bad mood.
I'll say "female dog," "beaver dam," "donkey," "heck," and "H-E double hockey sticks" instead. :whee:

So these two fish were swimming along and they hit their heads on a concrete wall.

One turns to the other and says. "Dam"

most of the groups I belong to are well....inside music jokes like MORE COWBELL, I just had an Eyegasim and I sit on the blue couchs all day and forget to go to class. But I also belong to the public school group, non smokers at MTSU Southern Bells and a few others.

Hooray! Someone from my old High School has started a site where all the alums just from our school can go and catch up with each other! And, to those who say "who wants to talk to old high school friends?" I'd much rather do that! I still live in the same town, there's stuff going on that people want to know about. As far as college goes? I haven't heard from anyone I went to college with in about 15 years! So, I'm having a good time with this little local site! :ok:

You DO realise how new email is, don't you?

Back when I was in school, computers were mainframe devices in rooms the size of a gym...programmed using punched cards.

They also had less power than the laptop I'm presently typing on.

Somehow I doubt Facebook will be much good for anybody past their mid 20s!

Hmmm... I started at university in 1991 and had e-mail from the start, although to begin with it was only available on a mac front end for horrible, horrible ELM (menus only navigable with function keys, you had to switch modes if you wanted to edit something already written because backspace wouldn't work, and it only understood 7-bit ASCII, so no special characters, which made it a bother to write in any language except English).

Slightly off topic, but I just had an interesting half hour Googling on the history of e-mail. It seems that there is no firm date that it was invented, and even less agreement on what constitutes the first use of e-mail as we know it today.

The first messages were being sent electronically but there were numerous different and incompatible systems. These gradually banded together and evolved. Certainly, universities and research establishments were using electronic data transfer early, and the systems they developed gradually evolved into the email system we use today.

Outside of universities, there were also a variety of competing systems (AOL, Compuserve, Delphi) that grew up over the years, but it wasn't until 1993 (according to a couple of sources I found) that these started connecting their members to Internet email.

So...since you were using a form of email in 1991, you were indeed an early adopter! I know that from the mid-80s I was using modems and bulletin boards, but it was into the 90s before I encountered email as we know it.

I check myspace solely because a couple friends don't keep blogs anywhere else. It's been known to crash my poor dialup browser with sudden deluges of graphics, so I don't like signing on at home.

It's kinda nice to have the highschool feature, but none of the people still in highschool I know with the account use it. I like it because I can find the people I went to school with (as far back as kindergarten for me--my school was K-12). I talked to one person today for the first time in about 7 years. I'm also trying to chat with some people in this year's classes so that I'll know a few.

haha Only bad thing about facebook to me is the fact that it makes it easier for people I graduated with to find me.

Continuing the off-topic conversation - email "as we know it" aka SMTP, was first defined in RFC788 in Nov 1981. This doesn't mean that it was in wide use, but presumably there were a few implementations at the time.
