I love all of David Eddings books but my absolute favourites are the Belgariad and the Mallorean series you cant beat them except maybe with the Ballybran books.

Have you read the Polgara and Belgarath books? They aren't part of a series as such but kind of follow on from the Malloreon and provide history of the Eddingsverse which covers from the creation of the world up until the beginning of the Belgariad

Yep, Eddings is one of my favorite authors. His books are what got me interested in fantasy in the first place. :D

I love the Belgariad and the Malloreon (my favorite), plus Belgarath and Polgara's books, but I didn't much like the Elenium and the Tamuli. Althalus was all right, though nowhere near as good as the first two series. I also enjoyed Regina's Song. I haven't gotten around to reading his newest series yet, but I'm going to, even though I hear it's not very different from his other series.

The Elder Gods is different in that the gods themselves seem to be the main characters, rather than just on the edges. (Well, except Fern.... I don't think anyone would DARE put HER on the fringes! LOL)

I love most of Eddings books. I have not yet read the Rivan codex and also havén't started on the Elder Gods. I think I will wait with that one untill the series is complete. The one book I didn't like was written by Eddings before he started writing fantasy. The title is High Hunt. I bought it at a bookmarket and never finished it. It was rather horrible and IMO badly written. But I can forgive him, as all authors have to learn how to write somehow / somewhere.

Just curious, what are these books about and which one should I start with? His books (or actually, most of them are written with his wife Leigh Eddings) are mostly traditional fantasy.

There are four different fantasy worlds, of which you can start with any. I myself recommend the Belgariad/Malloreon world, but everyone has their own preferances of course. :D

1st world: Books should be read in the following order:
The Belgariad (series): start with Pawn of Prophecy, then the rest of the series, then The Malloreon (beginning with Guardians of the West), then Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress. Oh, and The Rivan Codex if you want more background info.

2nd world: first The Elenium, beginning with The Diamond Throne, then The Tamuli beginning with Domes of Fire.

3rd world: The Redemption of Althalus (stand-alone)

4th world: (new series, four-part, first two books are published) Dreamers, beginning with The Elder Gods.

Lady of the weyr, have you read the books he has written before he started on fantasy? I would like to know what someone else thinks of them. I have only tried High Hunt and as I said before found it rather horrible and couldn't get into it.

I read The Losers ...it was very different. Reminded me more of Regina's Song. It wasn't fantasy at all.
And yes, the Belgariad and Mallorean are my favorite of his series. I've read both of the Elder Gods books and they are ok...not anywhere as good as his earlier stuff though.

The Redemption of Althalus...

************
SPOILER ALERT
************
Do Not Read any further

:fiend:

The Redemption of Althalus is brilliant, i loved his journey into civilisation to requisition the wealth of the rich ... with all the results that followed :D especialy when he threw away money that he didnt realise was money

emmy is brilliant too, i do think it was cruel though how she just tells him how long he's been away from his world for ;)

Spoiler Alert

Those are some of my favourite scenes in the book as well -H- . I had a lot of fun imagining his face when he realised that he had thrown away money  . Emmy is among the best characters (or maybe that should be types) that the Eddingses have written.

Elisabetha, maybe you should put a spoiler warning on your post...

Anneli

Maybe you should give them another go?

I prefer the Elenium trilogy (although the first book is pretty slow, the third one called "The Sapphire Rose" more than makes up for it in terms of being interesting and funny at the same time ;) )

IMO the Belgariad is good, but the Malloreon then more or less repeats the Belgariad since that's what the fans wanted :(

*no prizes for spotting similarities with the continuation of Ninth Pass Pern due to "popular demand"* :(

I have read all of the books by David Eddings except for a couple books here and there. I have also read The Elder Gods and now reading The Treasured One. I think these books are very good so far. I am looking forward to the third book.

Didn't care for the Malloreon at all....Except the end, when Belgarath finally gets what he deserves...

It might be fun reading them in English this time. I probably missed a lot of the humor in Spanish, because puns and the like are notoriously difficult to translate.

I liked the Malloreon better than the Belgariad, mainly because it skipped Barak and Mandorallen. Personally I like Sadi and Velvet more as companions to the "Child of Light". Also, you see a lot more of Beldin! He's one of Mr Eddings's better characters! :D

Zandramas is also a better villain than Torak. In the Belgariad, he's just a shadowy force behind the Grolims but in the Malloreon, you have her appearing almost at random, instilling fear and hate in the companions in a way Torak never did.

Eddings should have continued that pattern in the Elder Gods and Althalus but didn't. The Vlagh and Daeva are again barely present. You hardly feel that they menace the world at all! Also, the goals of Torak, the Vlagh and Daeva are less well defined than in Malloreon. The Malloreon is my fav series! :D

You know, I have a stack of books I haven't read yet (including Dragonsblood)
and yet, as I was browsing in a bookstore last weekend, I picked up Volume 1 of the Belgariad (includes the first 3 books in the series...I already owned the last two). My son stole it from me first (he's read the series before, but dropped the book he was currently reading), and now I'm re-reading it too with all the pleasure I got the first time.

That's the hallmark of a good author. :ok:

I started reading David Eddings out of desperation. I was on vacation in London during the first week of June and finished all the books i had with me. I went to a bookstore with a friend and started browsing for something to read. I picked up one of the Eddings books because 1) it was in the Science Fiction/Fantasy section 2) It was by David and Leigh Eddings (my first name - so it must be quality) and 3) I had heard the name somewhere before. I was very impressed and, as soon as I got home, went to the used bookstore I frequent to buy the rest of the series. I haven't gotten any others yet, but I will hopefully get them very soon.

The Redemption of Althalus was by far the best book the Eddings's wrote ... Its a shame it wasn't expanded into a series :(

It is really interesting to see that so many people think different series by the Eddingses are the best they have written. Especially as they don't really differ that much (I can't talk about the Elder GOd's series as I have not yet read them), apart from Regina's song that is. I have to admit that I have a favourite series too, that is the Sparhawk books. I think maybe it is not a question of which books are better, it might be more a question of which world/characters are more to someones liking?

Well, I finally went and got the first two books of the Belgariad - and went right through them! I like that we don't know any more than the main character does - although the myth at the beginning does give a few hints.

I'm very disappointed with his last series, The Dreamers. I tried...I read the first two and barely tolerated it. But this last one, "The Crystal Gorge" was just awful. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. If you haven't read it, spare yourself.

Oh my! That's awful! :(

I love his work. The Belgariad and Mallorean (and all other related novels) have always been fun and relaxing reads for me when I need something fast and easy. :) I love his way with dialogue.

I also enjoyed the two Sparhawk trilogies (I know they have a more specific name, but that's how I remember them!), and Redemption of Althalus.

I still need to read the new ones.

had the same reaction from a friend of mine when I lent him a book by a little known authoress  I think the first book was called 'To Ride Pegasus'.

Love all of the Eddings fantasy books, I've read the others, but I'm not so keen on them. I'm on my second set of the Belgariad, the first set were worn out with pages falling out. Goodness knows how often I've read them over the past 20 years

AT the end of the Malloreon, what happens that is of great importance to Belgarath, and you could say is his reward for his service?

Now, think about how wolves talk.

I can't explain it any better than that.
