View Full Version : Are you above average?

Do you consider yourself to be more than averagly intelligent in your country? In other words, do you consider yourself smarter than at least half the people in your country? (I have a hunch which column will have above average votes  )

I went with average.... although sometimes I literally cringe when faced with ignorant comments made by my some countrymen. It isn't that they are unintelligent, it's that they are arrogant and uniformed, and not interested in learning.
(edited to say: yeah, I know that's a sweeping generalization, and maybe unfair, but reflects the experiences I have had in other countries when dealing with other Americans also traveling there. Even Canada!)

In height, certainly. :good:
In weight, yeah. :erm:
In income, wayyy below :(
But I have a feeling you're talking about intellegence :shhh:
I think most people at this site could be considered "above average", for a couple of reasons.
First, people who tend to come here (and the OKT) are people who like to read, and read alot. Which is generall (but not always) a sign of being "above average," and the reading material generally chosen by this group is stuff that tends to attract the "above average" type person
Second, not only are the folks here readers (for pleasure, not because we're forced to0, but we're also a group of computer literate, internet literate people, another group that tends to be "above average"
Also, the conversations I've had here are also a good indication. They definately indicate an "above average" population!

I returned 156 at age 10 and recently tested to show 136 at age 58 (bring back dem brain cells, I tell you!).
But my elder sister with an IQ of just 98 is the one with the PhD and the stellar university career. Why? She worked like a Trojan; I coasted.
Course, this has NOTHING to do with commonsense - a different matter altogether . . . :O

I put myself about average. :D Although I did take one test in school that put me in the 98th percentile ........... for mechanics. :D

I've got the test results to prove it, too. I'm supposed to be LD... and my lowest IQ score in my deficient area is 145 (I average out at around 168, though I'm supposed to be restested in two weeks. Yay for college).
I agree with Lady Arwyn and what she said, and with Xhack. I'm also pretty sure that the tests have very little relevance to everyday life and how likely you are to suceed. Sure, I can take advanced courses at college and be the youngest around by years... but I'm lazy. And without basic workaholism, I don't think anyone gets anywhere.

Above average in intelligence, at least if college grades are anything to go by. Academically, school from first grade to college was too easy for me, never learned to do any work. Still got above average grades, so why bother? The only time I really had to struggle to get something finished was my master's thesis. But I too am one of those people who probably will never get as far as my potential might indicate, simply because I lack the ambition to work hard. Too indolent and comfortable.

Yeah, I'm above average. I've never needed to take an IQ test, so I don't know what my IQ is, but it's sufficiently high for what I want to do.
I'm another one who's coasted, though - didn't work for GCSEs, did the bare minimum for A levels and am currently "working" my way apathetically through a degree. Might have to do a little bit of work to get a first this year, though :erm:

I suppose the fact that I got to university must make me above average academically, but that's only one aspect of intelligence, even if it is the most easily measured. I would say that as far as 'common sense' is concerned, I'm probably off the bottom of the scale :upside:

According to tests done in grade two lol I'm above average (they were trying to put me in a special school for dyslexia or autism when my mother MADE them give me that test), started reading at age 4 (I know that's not young for SOME ppl lol specially the brits but it IS early here lol), and have a photographic memory (admittedly the album pages are HORRIBLY disorganized tho lol)
I agree with the others about those stupid tests, they really don't mean much, I mean I coasted thru school too with c's or middle of the road marks, never did homework or study, (TRY and teach your kids to study when you don't know how to do it yourself lol) with the exception of music of course :D.
I WONDER if there are so many ppl who are above average? will they raise their measure of average? Would REALLy screw things up lol.

Yeah, the average is always such that half of the population is above it and half are below it :) It makes sense that most people here are above the average as we are interested in an intellectual pursuit, but it just means that there are equally as many people out there who are below average...
Hmm, I expect this means that, if the intelligence of the population in general was to increase, then tests taken a number of years ago would be obsolete. An interesting thought, because after continuous retesting the accuracy drops due to practice, and so it would be difficult for people to always know what their IQ is.

And just because I consider myself intelligent doesn't mean I think I act accordingly...

The IQ tests--both Stanford-Binet and Weschler--are recalibrated and replaced every few years to compensate for this. There's actually a new version due to come out fairly soon.

Well, I know from the books/magazines that I read, mostly medical magazines aimed at Nurses, or Doctors:
The average American reads at a THIRD GRADE level.
I know, for a fact, that I did not read at a third grade leve when I was in the third grade. I also know that I do not read at a third grade level now.
So, even though I would normally consider myself dumber than a box of rocks, I can read higher than a third grade level, so am voting myself at above average.
Not being able to do evil nasty math does not change my vote, as eveyone who is anyone knows: math does not count anyway.

Above average, my kiddo though, while he is only in 7th grade reads at 1st year college level.
He also took SAT from Duke University and scored a 800.
He hates taking tests.

But how does this take into account the fact that getting an IQ of 100 (i.e. dead average) will mean that you're more intelligent than if you got a score of 100 when the population average was lower? Presumably it doesn't, and so you can't really compare scores with other people if the tests have been taken a significant period of time apart?

I'm not sure of the specifics, but I can make a (semi-educated if you count a few psych courses I'm taking) guess. Currently the average is actually somewhere around 110, so they're adjusting. And no, you can't really compare scores over a long period of time, unless you are only looking at how that person was compared to the norm. Unless there's something I don't know (there probably is), that would be one of the test's big flaws.

Yeah, I can't really see much reason why the tests should compare over time. They're designed as a measure of relative intelligence, so I suppose that's all they need to do :)

Congratulation!
Your IQ score is 126
This number is based on a scientific formula that compares how many questions you answered correctly on the Classic IQ Test relative to others.
Your Intellectual Type is Facts Curator. This means you are highly intelligent and have picked up an impressive and unique collection of facts and figures over the years. You've got a remarkable vocabulary and exceptional math skills — which puts you in the same class as brainiacs like Bill Gates. And that's just some of what we know about you from your test results.
 Hysterical giggling going on here. Exceptional math skill, yeah, right. I can't balance my cheque book. I love multiple choice. :D

According to C'milo's test:
your IQ score is 131
You are gifted with the natural fluency of a writer and the visual and spatial strengths of an artist. Those skills contribute to your creative and expressive mind.
Insightful linguists can take complex concepts and articulate them to just about anyone. You have a gift with words and insight into processes and the way people think. These talents enable you to explain things clearly to people. Helen Keller is a great example of an Insightful Linguist. Blind, deaf and mute, she was still able to put things together in her mind and to understand complex ideas. She could do that because she was able to conceptualise ideas internally. Though she could not literally see, she had the visual and spatial skills necessary to understand patterns on an abstract level. She learned to read, write and ultimately became a writer on issues of social justice.

I put myself in the about average category even though I've gotten in the 98-99 percentile on almost all standardized tests I've taken. That I think though, is just the fact that I'm good at standardized tests because I have friends who are smarter than me and who repeatedly did worse on the tests. So, I'm just average.
*edit* I just took the IQ test and it says I have an IQ of 147. Someday I want to take a real IQ test just to see how acurate these things are.

I am above average in my reading ability and comprehension. My math skills and science knowledge is a tiny bit above average. I love to learn new things. I am open to new ideas and people. One thing I stink at is learning new languages, mainly Spanish  , but I do not let it hold be back. I will keep trying till I get it or pass two semester whatever comes first.

I voted above average. I am not concieted, but I have been tested and shown to be way over average intelligance. The problem with that is, like some intelligant people, I tend to coast along and not put in the effort needed. The Pern books have a lot to say for my intelligance, I was reading them from the age of 6-8 and so read a lot more than I would have otherwise *grins*

I voted with the rest of the unmodest group. I think I AM highly intelligent, I sometimes let my emotions over rule my basic intelligence but it's still there, I may just be lacking in education at times but that doesn't dictate how intelligent I am.
I don't have a College degree because they just aren't seen as important in Australia as they are in other parts of the world and I didn't want to continue to study, in fact I have decided the perfect job for me is 'Mum', I keep house, make it easy for my husband to work and earn without burning out and I help at my kids school. I /know/ this is what makes me happy, another indication of intelligence, I know what I want and I have gone out and got it.
I do make sure I keep busy (this place keeps me on my toes for a start) so I don't turn into a soap-watching couch potato.....
Why do IQ test make so much difference? You'd fail it without the correct education levels right? So it's about education and not basic, native intelligence.................?
