Sooo... anyone read Robin Hobb at all?
The first I read were the Assassin series. Now I'm reading the third book in the Fool series (who starts with the third book, seriously!!!? Oh... wait... I did. LoL)

Robin Hobb is my second-favorite author, right after Tolkien! :hopping:
I've read all her books; my favorite series is Liveship Traders, but I would definitely recommend all of them!
If you've never read Robin Hobb, I suggest starting with Assassin's Apprentice of the Farseer series, then reading Liveship Traders, then Tawny Man. All those series happen in the same world, though Liveship in a slightly different place. The first two series don't (seemingly) have much to do with each other, but the second book of the Fool (Tawny Man) series totally gives away everything that happens in Liveship Traders.
On her website (http://www.robinhobb.com/) she says she's working on a new series which has nothing to do with her three first ones.

I, too, like Robin Hobb. Her next book is supposed to be out sometime this summer. Am really looking forward to it. :2cent:

I've never read any of Robin Hobb's books but I think I might try one as she will be a guest at Continuum3 (http://www.continuum.org.au/) a convention I might be attending.

I agree with that. That was the first one I read, and the one that got me really into this author.

Just read in the February issue of Locus, that Robin Hobb delivered her new book, Shaman's Crossing, first in the new trilogy Solder Son, to Voyager. I think that is a British publisher, but we can always order through Amazon, UK. :bouncy: :bouncy: :bouncy: :ok:

I agree. When reading these books, reading them in order is a must. Events that happen in the Assassin Trilogy are gossip in the Liveship Traders trilogy. Events that happen in both of those, are gossip, news and history in the Tawny Man trilogy.
And I never even realized that the Fool was....
 You didn't think I was really going to say it, did you?

Hope you enjoy it, Granath! The first book in her new trilogy is just out (or will be out soon - I'm not sure of the date but it is this month) called Shaman's Crossing. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Amazon, U.K. says July 4 for the hardcover and July 5 for paperback. However, if you live in the U.S., not until September. Canada, August 28.:2cent:

I love Robin Hobb.
BUT WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE SO STINKING SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD?!
I get about halfway through them, then I have to read some good old only HALFWAY depressing Shakespearean tragedies.
They are good, but maaaan, do they make me depressed. And irritated. Haven't gotten the last book in "The Tawny Man" yet, but at this point, I'm soooo mad at ____ right now. What an idiot! XP

The Farseer trilogy was sad, but the Tawny Man series was much better IMO. I haven't been able to find the Liveship series yet. I'll probably end up ordering it from Amazon eventually.

Just finished her latest book "Shaman's Crossing," the beginng book of a new trilogy. Didn't like the culture described, but it's still a good book. I think things will improve in the next books. But then I am a very big fan of Robin Hobb.:2cent:

I love Robin Hobb. :) She has a wonderful prose style. I really enjoyed all 9 of the books taking place in the world in which Fitz lives. The Assassins, the Live Ships (sooo different from some other worlds I've read!), and the Fool trilogy. She is the single best author I've read so far when it comes to being able to thoroughly DEPRESS the reader and STILL they won't put the book down!
Though I will say, the end of the Fool's trilogy was much more satisfying than the end of the Assassin's. ;) (and that's ALL I will say on the issue)

Well, I'm glad you decided to read the rest of the series. The ending of the second book is amazing IMO and the series is not all depressing. ;)

I nearly cried at the end of the third one, I was disappointed in the resolution to the Burrich and Molly storyline but then I am an old romantic lol. Also Verity and Kettricken *sobs*
I got more into the trilogy as it went on, and bought the Liveship Traders on 3 for 2 in Waterstones :ok:

I'm reading Fool's Errand at the moment, and it's great. Although it has to be said that so far I prefer the Liveship Traders trilogy to the other two. Fitz is a compelling personality, yes, but he's also very depressing.

I'm glad I looked at this thread because I skipped over Liveship Traders to the 1st book of Tawny Man. I saw hints that I probably needed to wait and go back and this thread confirmed it.
I'm so glad I chose to expand my reading to new authors its been so much fun. (It all started last year with Eddings) I read too fast though, good thing I like to reread.

Almost finished Liveship Traders. I really enjoyed them especially once I figured out just what made me uneasy about the nature of the ships themselves. I already have Golden Fool at home waiting since I have maybe one more days worth of reading on Ship of Destiny. I'm debating rereading Fool's Errand or waiting until I finish the other two and do the full reread.

I lucked out when I found mine and was able to get them 2 at a time just before I needed them. I still need to find Fool's Fate. Of course then I'll be sad because I have to cut back on book purchases for a while so it'd be a bad time to start with yet another new author.

That's the thing. I just spent a bunch on some other books, and my discretionary book spending money has dried up. So, if I can't find them used or in the library, I'm out of luck for a while.

Have you tried eBay? They have them at pretty low prices.
By the way, have a great time on your vacation.

I love the Farseer trilogy, I couldn't put any of them down. I was the same with the Tawny Man series as well. I also was wondering if it work as a film, although casting for The Fool might be a problem.

If you're talking about the Soldier Son trilogy, I can see what you mean. But I found it worthwhile enough (in spite of the fact that I would get disgusted with the hero at times) to keep on reading. At the end of the final book, I was glad that I did.

Yes, it was the Soldier Son trilogy (although I couldn't remember what the series was called for a moment there) that I couldn't get into. I've heard a lot of people say that the last book is better and actually makes the trilogy more readable, so I might just give it a try.

I didn't have as much of a problem with Shaman's Crossing as I did with the second book. I did persevere and found the final was worth it.
