I just pre-ordered Dragonsblood from the SciFi Book Club, and was wondering if anyone else has plans to read it?

They say it ships on January 25th so I guess it won't be long until we see what the future of Pern (writing wise anyway) is. I hope, and believe Todd will prove a worthy successor to Anne one day. :)

I'm planning to get it when it comes out in paperback.

How long does it normally take for books to go from hardback to paperback? Because I'm also waiting for Dragon's Kin to go to paperback so I can afford to buy it.

I think Dragon's Kin came out over here first though, so we'd get the paperback before the US does. They seem to alternate, the US got Gift of Dragons first, we got Dragon's Kin first, and now they get Dragon's Blood first. At least this time both versions have the same cover art, though the fonts used for the title & author's names are different, and the US version seems to be lighter & less "stormy" looking that the UK one. Also, the UK version doesn't have Anne's name splashed across the top (and since she didn't write it, I don't see why it should!).

Wow, I don't blame you. When I ordered Skyes the postage wasn't bad at all. I don't think that it cost more than a dollar or two more then waiting and getting it from Amazon here. Of course that was a while ago and prices go up all the time, but for some reason hardly ever go down.

I really enjoyed Dragon's Kin. I feel Todd did a great job. Tuff subject to write on since not a lot was known about them. Dragon's Blood shall be mine on the 25th or the 24th if I can cheat just a little. I usually don't but this would be worth it.

Well, Michael, it all depends on what writing style you like... personally I prefer Anne's. OK, Todd has only written two books but I am quite sure already.

Michael
7th January 2005, 02:16 PM
Tony, I wasn't aware of the dual release date. That bites! But, as has been pointed out, they do seem to alternate, so next time I have to wait.

Hans, I agree with you about preferring Anne's style. I liked Dragon's Kin, but it's not my favorite. I think the story was good, but it ended abruptly, and perhaps could have had more detail.

Anyway, I think Todd knows Anne's Worlds (especially Pern) as well as anyone, so I wish him the best and will always give his Pern work at least one read.

About Todd McCaffrey. Is Anne No-longer writing?

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Maybe she's just running out of ideas. Heaven knows she's written so many Pern books and short stories. Perhaps she's just thinking, "It's been done, now let's move on." If that's the case, good on her for not letting Pern be abandoned completely.

As for the Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern that's for the "other" folks that might not figure it out that it's part of the same series  you know the dumbing of the populace?

I tend to agree with Hans--Dragon's Kin did read like fan fic, and from the plot synopsis I saw, Dragonsblood bodes to be more of the same. I think we've had this discussion on the old KT--while I like plot twists as much as the next person, the synopsis reads way too much like an RPG and not so much as a book. Think TMC has played too many RPGs...

But I guess I'll have to reserve a first edition, if for nothing else than to complete my collection. Maybe it'll read better than the plot synopsis suggests!

I use our local independent bookseller here in the Phoenix area--we need to support our independents! Yeah, it's more than Amazon or Barnes and Noble charges, but we need that non-corporatized approach to books, lest we become further homogenized and lose our uniqueness!! Besides, genre publishing needs independent bookstores to sell their wares in.

Although a nicely painted image for the cover does make it look better, the important part is the story, so I'm just hoping thats up to standards. From what I've heard so far it sounds promising.

 fully admit to being a cover art snob. I think it comes from being an artist. And there's NO WAY those horrid stripey DelRey covers are joining my collection of pretties.
And people have laughed at me for the cover thing. ,it's o.k. we all have our idiosyncricies

Bronze-Dragonrider

Well I certainly prefer a good cover over those stupid simple pictures on some. I had Dragonsblood saved for me at the bookstore, but something happened resulting in that getting cancelled, so I just ordered it through the SFBC a few days ago. I'm praying that it has the good cover on it my Les Edwards, but the picture on the email showed the old version. I was looking around for the little asterix that says "Not actual cover art" but didn't find it. Oh well its still the same book.

Michael
16th January 2005, 09:36 PM
Well, I'm not a "cover art slob". All of my Anne McCaffrey books are the SciFi Book Club editions, so they all match, but even that makes little difference to me. I'm not a collector; I'm a reader. ;) I go after what's between the covers first and foremost, but will admit to an occassional opinion of various covers... :D

Take care & enjoy,

Before or after Dragon's Kin?

Dragonsblood takes place at the end of the First Pass and the start of the Third Pass alternately. Thus for the Third Pass part it is placed not so long after Dragon's Kin and some of the characters in that book reappear in Dragonsblood. In the First Pass chapters we, of course, encounter many known characters.

Kat, there are 150 character names in Dragonsblood -- the majority of them new ones -- but not many new geographical names :(

I can't wait to get the book.... I already KNOW what happens as I've been LISTENING to D. B. on a Book on DC... I won't tell you anything about what happen's in the book because I do not want to spoil anything... but there are a few surprises and a few very sad events... all in all I've REALLY enjoyed listening to it on the CD...

I just wonder why the CD (or book on tape) came out three weeks before the book was due out. Not that I'm complaining or anything..... LOVE PERN!!

Ah ok. I haven't gotten the book yet, I didn't know about that. Well, its easy enough for the original author to forget little details like that, but its even easier for another writer to overlook something like that. At least it wasn't any major plot hole. But inaccuracies do get irksome.

I just got notice that it will be delayed and won't be here until the 28th to the 4th of February!

I've only heard one book on tape, Dragonflight. It was alright, but I prefer the printed page, too. It cut out alot of the book to make it fit on two tapes. I'd rather have the WHOLE book. And its harder to imagine the voices of the characters when a voice is already telling the story.
