View Full Version : Postcard Exchange: I've Made the Crossing!
Apocalypse
13th December 2004, 09:57 AM
Welcome to the new home of the PCX :hopping:
For anyone coming to the thread for the first time, what we do is exchange snail mail addresses via pm or email, then exchange postcards. Some people like to send out postcards monthly, some just send out cards when they can find them or can afford them, others just exchange the one time only. It is entirely up to you how often you want to send.
We have people all over who participate - from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, South Africa and Canada. Also W'llim, who is in the Navy, has sent many cards from exotic locales in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and some from the US as well.
It's a lot of fun, and it's never too late to join in.
We realize that sometimes circumstances change, that this may have turned out to be not quite what you expected, or that workloads and amounts of time and money have shifted, so we do not want anyone to feel that this is a lifelong commitment with no way out. If you wish to leave the exchange at any time, simply post to the thread in progress and say your good-byes. All participants will be able to read your intentions and act accordingly.
To anyone underage who wishes to join the postcard exchange, please ask a parent or guardian first if you can give out your address!! We have had some people get in trouble with their parents over this. So please get permission first before PMing anyone.

I've posted a link in the old thread.
Largely.
Of course, that means old thread at KT, not old thread at AKT. I wonder if I need to do that as well.
It's far too early for this.
(Actually, I like this one :runaway: but don't have enough energy yet)

Wow! The postman brought me so much I almost couldn't carry it all in! Oh boy! Posties and Cards and SS Pressies and oh my goodness, I love mail today!!
Okay, here goes:
Thank you Prekharper for the adorable penguin card! Too cute! I love penguins, they remind me of little boys in tuxedos. :)
Dawn M the cactus desert postie with santa on his way is very cool! Thanks!
Apo/Kas, some holiday party! Even without the sun Nice looks like it would be lovely! I want to party there!
Leah, the Taste of Postville postie is cool! I would never have guessed that Iowa was so diverse and multicultural, being smack in the middle of the country and all!
Lisa Lewis, your holiday postie was simply beautiful! I just got home from Colorado and am sort of missing snow, so it really touched a chord. Thank you!
Birgit I loved the new year card! Ein gutes neues Jahr und frohliche weihnachts! (And apologies for anything I misspelled!)

Leah for the Uffda postie... I agree sometimes that's all you need to say :) (btw, I love little gnomes )

Dawn for the southwestern christmas postie
Rho for the snowy shepard postie... I haven't seen a long haired shepard in years.... But I guess with the amount of snow I see in the picture she'd need the length to stay warm..

and last but not least thanks to :fiend: Dad Attraio for the beautiful collage postie of SA. Karen my 1st grader wants to bring it to school to show it to her class and teacher. She wanted to go walk on the beautiful beach :)

Nice is on the coast and shares borders with Italy and Switzerland (I think). There are some very large mountains beyond the coast, but lots of people got to Nice for the beaches and for somewhere to stay during the Monaco Grand Prix ;)

Saturday I tore a ligament in my ankle and am on crutches and worse yet not allowed to drive until Friday. :ouch: Yesterday I had a friend drive me to the post office and stood in line to buy stamps only to be told they were out of stamps and silly me had left the cards at home so they couldn't just meter them! :banghead: :banghead: I am going to try again today at a different post office and hope for the best... Please have patience with me and have a merry and a happy!

Woops, I haven't posted here yet? Did so on the AKT, I guess.
I haven't organized my posties since I got back from TX, but thank you to all and once I get it set up will try to thank you all personally, But I do remember the dragon card from jjmouse that everyone is raving about. Maybe next year I'll try to see if I can get one made for Chanukah! That would be really cool!
I've got a huge stack of posties for the next few months (years?). Now that I'm into it, I'm REALLY into it. I'm a post card maniac! Now I'm trying just to buy cute ones, before, when I first started, I was just buying every type I could find. Now I've got a bit of discrimination. Hooray!

Thank you all for my Seasonal Greetings cards - they are all in a heap right now but I hope to sort them out tomorrow when I take down the tree.
I spoke to my sister today - she has been back in hospital since Tuesday and this round of chemo had been really rough. They gave her 3 units of blood yesterday which has helped considerably. She sends thanks for the cards but couldn't remember who from - except she has Hermi's on the table. The day before - according to babysis - she had been too fatigued to even open the Christmas letter from my daughter.
Those of you reading Clanfiend will know I have other concerns as well - please excuse - life does go on and normal service will be resumed

I'm planning to addressing mine and, G-d willing, organizing my list, etc., this week. I picked up so many cute ones on my trip down to Texas. We are driving down again at the end of the month, and hope to get more from that trip. I've turned into a postcard maniac - I have this slight obsessive compulsive tendency - good thing I'm not a super detail oriented patient person, I think it saves me from really going over the edge in that area. And I have enough little psychological quirks already - don't need any more!

Had a nice card with Golden Bells from Golder today.
Someone asked about the bird on my card. With a very few exceptions, my cards had snowscene and a Robin on them. The Robin became associated with Christmas because the postal delivery boys (around the time cards first became popular) used to wear red waistcoats
However generally it is probably the most easily recognisable of British birds and is generally held in affection. It is cheeky and perky and can become very tame if you are a gardener, waiting to snatch up grubs and worms as you do your winter digging. Although it is seen all year round it stands out in winter. It also has a lovely song.

Can we make this thread sticky? It really is a staple of the board/forum.
The wonderful Chanukah card I got was from PreKharper. I just put a bunch of my posties in my scrap book. And someone sent me a great postie of a bunch of painted fire hydrants.
I recognized Keruval's birdie right away, so then I thought maybe other people got different birds. Our robins here in the states don't really have RED breasts, they are more of a burnt orange. Are they really red in the UK?
Kousin K, I sent your sister one of my funny posties. I was addressing my January ones, and realized I was running out of my favorite funny one, and really wanted to send your sister something cute, so I skipped ahead of the line and sent the last one to your sister. Ask her if you can see the Minnesota one and you'll see why I sent it to her.
Kat, that's a drag about your notebook. I'll PM you, G-d willing. I usually copy my PMs directly over to a Microsoft Works word processing program, and then print out the whole thing each month. But G-d forbid something should happen to the computer! Maybe I'll send another copy of it over to the other computer on email.

Thanks to Dux for the Arlington National Cemetery postie. The last time I was there was about 10 years ago. I think the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns is very impressive. We also found a tomb with the same name as our oldest daughter's nickname. NeeNee :D
and Thanks to Stebbi for the Arkansas postie. Your Mom does some beautiful work with her photos!! I honestly thought it was a store bought card until I read that your Mom had made it!!!

I'm a little behind so bear with me!
First up: Cards before Christmas!
Apo managed to relay an Egypt card to me... Did you go to Egypt or something? :evil Also from Apo, a Nice card... No, not a nice card, a Nice card! Marlee and Lisa Lewis also appeared through my letterbox, flat but no less colourfull! And speaking of colour, Stebbi added a touch with some marvelous fire hydrants  Lexx was represented again thanks to K and the gas man left a meter reading card...
Xmas Greetings came from the following wonderfull people:
Butterball, Keruval, Auntie Creep, Prekharper, Cameo, Eggy, Kat, K, Kitty, Mausey, Birgit, Lisa Lewis, Momma:klah::fiend: & Socrates, Rho, and Coloulress Lapine! :snowflake: With Festive Fanks! :snowflake:
(Sorry :sorry; that's a wee bit late!)
Finally, bringing us up to date, though I'm sure I've mislaid a few, is todays Alexandria card, with uniformed men on the front always a bonus! Thank you Eggy! :D

I've been trying to decide whether to continue my wait for postcards or to go buy some locals for this month or to send some of the freebies I picked up at the nature center. However, I received a postie today from my daughter, sent from Iceland, stating that she'd picked up "loads of postcards" for me to send. She should actually be arriving back in the US today and will send them to me in a packet then. My decision is to wait until next week and send posties from somewhere that most of you probably do not have!

I want to thank everyone for the Christmas cards. I know that this is a bit late. Well. Ok, it is a lot late. I have had stuff going on and they all stayed up on the door longer than usual. So Thank you all for the cards. :)
I am not sure when I will get Janurary cards sent out. Everyone who did not get a Christmas card from me should get a St. Patrick's card. I will try and get them posted from St. Patrick again this year.
Kaslarna, I need your snail mail addy. I no longer have it, and I wish to add you to my list.
Any newbie, feel free to pm me your addy, and you will be added to my list also. I am pretty good about sending them out every month. Not so good at keeping up with the thank yous.
Keruval, it seems to me you had a relative you wished added to willing peeps list, if you pm me the address I will be happy to add her to my list.

The names on the wall are those who died, a total of 58,245 names. As soldiers who were declared MIA (Missing in Action) are shown to be deceased their names are added to the Wall.

In the past week I have received :) :
A card and letter from Maedhbh - posted 13 Dec :erm: I have added you to my horrendously long letter list - I will get round to replying but not promising when ;)
The parade in Alexandria from Dux and a Seasonal card from Mausey
A returned card sent to Menara - now I am not sure what the correct address is :(
Today I received the Up Helly AA from Rho and middlesis BJ told me she also had card from Rho :)
Leah - the ice huts is OK by me as I have visions of them cutting a hole in the floor to fish through? Please tell me it is so :D
AND have good news at last from BJ :) Yesterday she had the results of the latest scan and all main tumours are gone - only traces now to dispose of with the next sessions of chemo. The session just finished was really fierce and she was unable to tell me who had sent her cards, though one day mentioned one from Chicago? However she asked me to send her thanks and really appreciated the cards and thoughts and prayers.
Today she was suddenly told she may go home for 48 hrs and a friend is going to stay with her as it is such short notice and not long enough for me to go. She will ask her friend to help her make a list of her cards :) as she had to send most of her things home - not much space for keeping things.

I'm sorry. I know I sent a load last year, but they must have been to different people  .
Up Helly Aa is a psudo-viking fire festival held in various parts of the islands at this time of year. The main one, in Lerwick, is next Tuesday. It's when a procession of around 900 guizers (dressed up as vikings or in some sort of topical costume) parade around and then burn the viking galley they have spent all year making. Then there is a night of dancing and drinking till around 8am.

Last time I went ice fishing was with cubs and we set up a big canvas tent for the kids to fish in. It was a bit windy and cold so they needed a warm(er) place. The kids had a good time, too bad they didn't catch anything.
Tell the girls if all the hut smelled of was fish they were lucky. Some ice fishing huts smell of much worse things. For some reason known only to the male of the species, ice fishing seems to require a large quantity of cold beer and warm beans, a lethal combination at the best of times. She is now on a 10 day chemo series and is not likely to be allowed home in between this and the final 4th round of chemo. She said she was glad to be home for a few days but found it very tiring even looking after her own personal needs. So it looks as if I will not be needed for 4-5 weeks yet.

Oh I am soooo far behind on stuff!
RL has been getting me down, being unable as yet to find employment; because I am either under- or over-qualified for everything so either way they don't hire me. This has left our cash flow extremely tight, so I am just now rounding up enough for stamps for a round of posties. I'm sorry to be so sporadic, and I love getting cards and sending them. I'll be getting this lot out today, but I may be a bit random 'til I find a job.
I have thank you's for
Leahiniowa - the enormous sun hat really made the card! Too funny!
Lisa Lewis - that is awesome that your son won that! Good luck with the $$$!
Stebbi - Your Mom is reaaly getting good at this postcard design business! She could make good money selling them, I bet!
Dux - The Arlington National Cemetary card is way cool. I always imagined it was just rows of white tombstones with no trees or anything. It's really very pretty!

 I hope something turns up soon. Send when and if you can, we never go away. The cemetary was originally the Plantation home of the Lee family. So it has gardens, paths and hills to climb. The house is even still there to be toured if you like. The grounds are covered in cherry trees so the best time to visit is early May. It looks like the place has been taken over by a batch of grand ladies wearing huge tilted hats! (that's what cherry trees is bloom look like to me)

Bertrand, I can't tell if you're serious or joking, unless they did put some around the Pentagon recently and I didn't know it. I was so fascinated by the Pentagon when I was a child, b/c I learned that it was so big they used golf carts to drive around inside and get places, and it seemed such a marvelous thing, to be allowed to DRIVE inside a building. What a fantasy! I also used to fantasize about having the freeways closed down for a day so we could all roller skate and ride bikes on them.

Have I got a movie for you, then....Americathon It's got John Ritter, Harvey Korman and others. It's a comedy future (it was made in about 1979) where they're out of gas and everyone rides bikes, skateboards and rollerskates. People live in old cars, they have school in schoolbuses and they've sold Washington D.C. so the president presides from a condo in L.A.
When ShoTime first started, they played two movies, that one and Grease I think I'm the only one who ever saw it. However, I have the soundtrack, proof that I didn't imagine it. Anyway, the movie opens w/ people skating, jogging and biking on the Santa Monica freeway.

I don't like US government buildings. The US embassy in my country has a 10 feet tall wall with barb wire at the top and CCTV cameras at every 5 feet. Dozens of guards carrying loaded MP-5 submachine guns patrolling the parameter. And I have to walk pass the place 4 times a week :irked:

Actually they do have Pentagon tours for tourists. While the building itself is secure - you can't just walk in without going through lots of checkpoints and the entire area is under survaillance, it is not walled in. In fact the Pentagon is very close to one of the major highways of the area and you can get a good view of the building as you drive by. I believe it is the largest office building in the world (clearly not in height), so walling it in would be extremely expensive.

Ice fishing is a popular sport in this area. Many people cut a hole in the ice where they know there are a lot of fish and sit there fishing. Some people make little houses with a heater to sheild them from the weather.
The boys of winter is a joke, making fun of the ice fishermen. See how they're dressed in such a messy way? And they have funny teeth too. I can't remember for sure, but I think they had beer with them as well? It was making fun of the ice fishermen, that they are dirty and dress poorly and drink a lot of beer, but that being in the cold weather doesn't bother them. That was basically it, unless Mausey or someone else has more and better information.

Just been talking to Birgit and she has asked me to tell you her current cards will be delayed. Her Dad, who has been ill for some time, died peacefully in his sleep last Friday. As you can imagine, she doesn't feel able to cope with cards right now but especially doesn't want the new people she promised to think she had forgotten them.
Also talking to BJ tonight - she has not made list yet as not felt quite up to that. But asked me to thank all who had sent cards - she really has appreciated them. :)
Oh no! My thoughts are most definitely with her and her family.

Thank you Fejar for the Yorkshire Dales. I'd like to be somewhere green right now (instead of white and grey). :ok:

Lisa Lewis: You are correct and I would like to see more cards of you and your family...and as soon as I have an operational computer once more, I'll send you some picture posties in return! :bouncy: Alec is a lovely kid! Fingers crossed you get the proceeds for what he needs!
How does a dancing scholarship work exactly? Is it like a sports scholarship?
A dance scholarship helps defray the costs of going to a convention/ workshop where there are many talented young people leraning the latest new dance moves and styles. In Alek's case, he eraned a scholarship for his Hip-Hop abilities. In NYC he'll be taking a number of classes during the day and in the evening he'll be rehearsing for an Off Broadway production. I'm hopeing that we can use this as a place where we can start networking and getting him the contacts he'll need to go further in persuit of dance as a career.

Rho - Up Kelly Aa to you too! Love the Dragon head! By the way, I received the first Christmas card you sent - it arrived in an envelope from the US Postal Service torn up into about 5 pieces! No wonder it didn't arrive in time!

Sharon, are the list of "In and Out" up to date? I'm currently trimming my PCX list and according to the list only 11 of the 27 people I have addies for are still listed as active...
I'm unsure of these:
KarineS
Joliee
Toni_lovedragons
Faren
Kitch2/Kitster
Rabble
B'lanna
Jayson
I know B'lanna has trouble with her parents about the KT, so I haven't been sending her cards lately. Does anybody know if she is still active?

Silverspirit, (I still want to call you, Attraio. ;) ) I know that KarineS, Faren and Kit dropped out either before or after the crossover. Jayson is still in but only sending every now and again. Not sure about the rest. :tilt:

You can certainly still call me Attraio! That name will return just as soon as the Uni admin unlocks by e-mail box! (I forgot my password and can't send the confirmation to the board: set up a hotmail account to register in the mean time)
Thanks! Thats 3 definitely off then! Thanks Dawn! :hugs:

Joliee dropped out too. I believe Toni is still on, she just doesn't send very often.
